100-400mm Landscape Photography in a Tropical Rainforest

- In 2020 I managed to take a wonderful trip to Hawaii to capture some landscape photography. In this vlog, at first, I start off shooting wide-angle scenes with the 16-33mm lens. But then I quickly shift my attention to the 100-400 telephoto lens to photograph more intimate details of the location.

The first light ray photo is my favorite .Beautiful photo
"Michael, get your composition, you can do it."! 😆 Great videos!
I like the "light beams" photo on the left. The ridges put them better into context and the beams themselves are better defined (look like "god rays").
While stationed in the Marine Corps back in the 80’s in Hawaii I took a lot of film pics all around the various islands of Hawaii. After seeing your video today, I am now adding a trip back since I have a greater understanding of compositions and a little bit of a quality camera and lenses in my bag…Thanks for sharing your adventure and story telling Michael!
I miss my 100-400 a lot and I need to get another one. BTW, I liked the first light-ray image best.
My pick has to be the left images with the emphasis on the three ridges and the light ray. I enjoyed the time lapse, too.
I like the Brighter photo, very dynamic. Both are awesome and one of my favorite types of sceens
Hi Michael...
I think I like the first photo of the Sun shining through the mist that features the three ridgelines.
Great photos, and a nice video! 😉
I like the image on the left with the three ridge lines and the kiss of light beams. Thanks for sharing!!!
8:05 OMG it's my favorite picture.. verry wonderful 😍🏞
Thank you Michael. 🇫🇷🇫🇷🇫🇷
Love the bigger beam of light. Great shots.
I love how you always emphasize fun and play as part of your process.
I like the bigger beam of light and the time lapse.
I love watching your videos to help wind down after work. Thank you
Beautiful - loved the one at 5:55 - just wow!
Excellent video! I prefer the wider shot with 3 ridge lines! Also, you had a square cropped image of trees with colors other than green that I really liked! Thanks for sharing!
Big beam of light 👌
Top work - big light beam shot is my fav.
As usual Michael, superb! I think the abstract image of the green/yellow trees with white trunks on the distant hillside is one of my all time favorite images of yours.
Another great video. One of the things that I love about your photography is that you see images where most would simply pass by. For me, the shot with the three ridges is the better of the two.
Great shots! Like the bigger light beam! The orange leaves shot was favorite.
Can't wait for the rest of the series!
Beautiful video, Michael 😍😍😍. I really like the right picture. The bright areas looks a little like a person or an angel. Sometimes phantasy is something beautiful...
Have a nice evening and stay healthy. Regards from the stormy Germany. Dirk
Wow Michael, you have such a great eye! I love all of your work. You not only have a gift of composition but such a gentle way of explaining your method. You also have such a great voice for these vlogs. You are a great master of your craft. Very much appreciated and I am a big fan. Keep it up you inspire me to go out and be better at seeing what is around me even in a cold Montréal winter.
Ah … Kauai. Such good memories that you managed to reignite with your video. Beautiful photography!
Timelapse was stunning Michael .
Spectacular as always - the one with 3 ridge lines (less sun beams).
I love my 100-400 and those light rays are spectacular, I can’t pick between them. Amazing Michael, thanks for another incredible video.
just wow!
Love your work as always !! I
More outstanding work Michael. The two three ridge images are equally beautiful, similar yet different enough that they are both winners. The time lapse was fabulous as were many images of the trees, I especially enjoyed the abstract type ones too. 👏😀👍
I liked the image with the bigger beam of light, also the last image. Looking forward to the next video looks super spectacular.
Great video. Nice pictures!! I understand perfectly when you talked about the difficulties of photographing inside a Tropical Forest, especially when we talk about light. Greetings from Brazil.
One of my favorite videos..... Amazing images....
I personally liked the balance in the 1st photo with the 3 ridge lines where the light is not as dramatic. Both are amazing, thanks for sharing!
You have made shooting in the rain seem joyful! Work with what is presented you... Isn't life so as well? What a sea of green to start the spring! Thank you! The "three ridges" is preferred due to the play of sun rays and rain streaks.
Amazing! As usual!
I love your videos. I like the first image focusing on the three ridges and the soft light.
I like the three ridges showing through. Nice images all around, though. Thanks for posting this video.
Great video and photos!
I think I like the first photo emphasizing the three ridges, but both are great!
Also, great to see the old warhorse, D850, back doing its thing!
Loved the part, birds cheering you up 😅
We in Germany here are still pretty much stuck in winter and I just got to say that these greens and the sounds of the forest were really pleasant!
Love that photo at the end with the ridge!
The picture at 7:47 is outstanding! So nice this different tones of green. Have fun in Kauai
Beautiful video! I liked the 2nd light rays shot more
loved to watch this video. calm voice and beautiful pictures! The view at 8:00 looks really like a painting of paradise. thank you!
Always great images but the ridge line with smaller light rays and tree silhouettes is definitely my favourite, I look forward to the next UA-cam video.
Don't know how I stumbled on this video of yours but I'm happy I did. ☺️
I prefer the 3 ridgeline image. Just gorgeous in all cases. I think I like the all green scene the best from the video.
Astonishing video!
I've done that exact hike! You captured amazing images and mood.
Breathtaking ! I'm leaving for the rainforest of Costa-Rica and your video is soooo inspiring .Thanks a ton for sharing your masterful work.
I liked the softness of the first one with the heavier ridgelines. It drew my eyes in and through the picture more with the contrasting peak.
Great video, green forest, flowers, rain showers ... I miss all of that because it's winter in my area...no snow, just flat, boring, dull winter 😭
Amazing video again! My favorite is the picture at 8:17, the few orange leaves add so much to the scene in my opinion. Love it
Lots of cool photos but the one at 8:17 was the one that made me go ooof too. Of the two ridgeline shots at the end, both beautiful, I think the peak on the third ridgeline in the first photo wins as a composition but the illuminated rain in the second is the most spectacular.
Another great vlog, Michael. Since you asked, I prefer the second wider band of light. The texture and contrast are beautiful.
That was a really cool video to watch. Great pictures!!!
Beautiful work Michael. Great adventure
So nice and tranquility is great
The onr with the Ridge lines.
Love it Michael. I'm heading to the Big Island in March so, despite the islands being very different in terms of geography and climate, your work from Kauai is great inspiration.
Pu’u Namolokama spectacular time lapse and capture well done 👏👏
A lovely video. Of the 2 you offer for comparison, my preference is for the first one, mainly because the the top cloud isn't so heavy but the real stars of the show for me were the foliage with the yellow flowers and the other with all the spindly trees, you describe as chaotic. Love it. Thanks.
Great video to indulge in middle of the week. These videos really help to see how you compose interesting patterns in rather chaotic subjects. I liked the one on the left with the ridgeline a little more. I found it more appealing.
I loved the photo with lightbeams and the clouds above. Beautiful rainforrest Michael. Thnx
thanks so much!
Beautiful images!
I have never been disappointed by your image making Michael and look forward to watching every episode you post. This another great set of images and you are so good at your craft it is hard to pick just one. For the light rays I like them both to be honest. I also love your natural style of videography.
Kind of a sucker for big scary looking mountains so the photo that focuses on the 3 ridge-lines has to be my favorite!
Beautiful pictures.😊
Kauai is an amazing place to visit and photograph with the changing weather and scenery. I missed the Na Pali coast back in April 2019 (closed off due to recent flood damage), so I'm looking forward to seeing the images you captured there.
Great video! Beautiful image at 5:30!
My favorite light ray photo is on the left.
But they are both fantastic.
Beautiful work, man! I like the shot with the larger light beam. Great composition and contrast.
Love it
Mate your the best..keep shooting ..simple approach the better outcome be blessed always.
The first ray photo for me.With your videos we literally feel like we’re there…..thanks man.👌🏻👌🏻
amazing video! this inspired me so much!
dang man you really made the best of what you had, tropical forest is so tricky, beautiful photos!
Love it, Dude!
Your photography is spectacular!
Really like the 3 ridge image. It seems much more “compact”.
I loved this video Michael. Can’t wait to see the next one. You know it’s funny… I live in Hawaii and shoot in those conditions where the rain just starts to pour and the stop over and over again constantly. I usually scramble to put away my blogging camera and all my other gear as the rain starts. Never did I think to just bring a plastic bag to wait out the rain 😂. This video might have charged my life. Thanks man
great work, I love the layer and light shots ( first is my favorite) and the forest images are beautiful. Its funny I look at everyone else's forest images and think wow thats amazing and look at my own like thats just messy
I'm so psyched I just found your channel, I definitely appreciate your style and thought process. Plus, I'm headed to Kauai next week so these vlogs couldn't be timed any better! If I had to choose one of your Hanalei images, I would pick the left image that focuses on the 3 ridge peaks.
Fantastic
Another great video Michael! So many great images! I def prefer the heavy ridgeline photopgraph better! 👌🏽
Nice! Looking forward to watch the next video.
more to come :)
I am nobody to critic your art but because you asked, I prefer the image with emphasis on ridges more than the one on right !
Loved the vid! Prefer the image highlighting the ridges but they both were powerful! You’re really inspiring me to look behind the macro as well. Really love how you see the grand view but yet draw into all kinds of images within!
Fantastic photos once again. Rainforests/jungles have got to be hard to photograph!
It's like pine forests. I take fishing trips to the Sierras every Fall and bring my EOS R with me. The forest looks incredible with the eye, but it doesn't translate well to a camera unless you get the right tree shapes and patterns.
Finding the right composition takes a long time. Great stuff, Michael. More please! 👍
Excellent work dude. Some beautiful shots in there. Loved the shots with the light rays especially. The larger beam of light image wins it for me.
Looks great, Michael. As far as the two photos are concerned, I prefer the one with the bigger beam and dark cloud at the top that forms a frame.
Great photographs! Personally I always find it hard to take pictures in all green scenery. You managed to find some colour interest and textures. And the light on telephoto pictures of rain is beautiful!
I like the photo of the silhouetted trees on the ridge lines. Great video.
thanks so much Kerry!
Great location and great video as always. I preferred the one on the left slightly as it has a little more geometry and balance working for it.
So beautiful pictures you took.Taking pictures of forest is very difficult for me cause' every line is chaotic, everything has so different shape. It's hard to find balance in the photos when taking pictures in that environment.I feel amazed by the pictures.
Bigger beamer 🙌🏻
Hey Michael....I live here and I have to say all of your photos were inspiring. I saw things in a completely different way. I liked the photo on the left more but both were fine. I better find my camera and take a fresh look at things.
I am not a fan of photographs with trees or in woodland but I really loved the one with the lone tree (5:05) and colors/shapes/textures of this one (8:38). The final view at the end of the trail is amazing.
Great!!!
