    Today is the day, #Mechwarrior s, that we learn about... The #Commando

    I love this one. There's nothing fancy about the commando. It runs fast enough to scout and packs enough weapons to punch even heavier mechs on the jaw before running off again. #FakeNews! Everyone knows that the Lyran scout mech is the Zeus. Closely followed by the Atlas.
    I dont have much to say about the Commando. It does the job and can kind of scout (no JJs), but the firepower makes its scary for other recon mechs. I dont like the odd mixture of SRM4 and 6. It bugs my mech Feng Shui. I would just have dual SRM4s. I do like the large laser variant, that's scary at low tonnages.

  • @oscarcoastwilde

    A "steiner scout lance" fitting their MO of overwhelming force without care of cost while still being reasonable would probably have one (or two) Commandos, accompanied by a combo of one or two heavier mechs like either Griffin, Thunderbolt, or Zeus because those can actually keep up with "scouting" while delivering firepower.
    The slowest mech for this would be maybe one of those Atlas/Cyclops with advanced sensors and ecm that can serve as a recon command post directing the lighter mechs but yeah.
    I'm sure some nobleman could still have a "fast attack force" with lances full of Zeus playing polka music and wearing lederhosen like the memes though

    The big sell in my opinion is that the commando can hunt tanks like no other. Throw enough location rolls and you are going to get mobility kills and critical. That would be the build to go for tank busting, throwing a dozen missles at each tank to see what sticks, you don't even need to kill a vehicle outright with damage half the time, just instigate enough status effects to put it out of the fight.

    The Commando is being compared to other mechs at the same tonnage range, except they put 3 tons into jump jets. Does anyone wonder why the Commando is performing better? Jump jets are sexy, but you need a reason to have jump jets on a mech for it to make a big difference. Jump jets make scout mechs look marginally better. The difference in performance between 6/9/0 and a 6/9/6 is paper thin. Slower mechs on the other hand, 4/6/4 can make a huge difference in lightly wooded terrain, or city fighting. 3/5/3 the jump jets allow the mech to reposition at a minor heat cost. For the rare 2/3/2 mech, the jump jets are kind of critical.

      Funnily enough, IIRC, the Federated Suns I think may have Atlas's as being more common on the random mech assault table.... It's really just a meme, funnily enough. Most Steiner assaults are like, Zeus's and Banshees too, which is even funnier. XD

    Hello big red40k. This was a really good video. The commando, and you are 100% right, was house steiner’s premier scout mech. The combo of Missiles and laser made it quite versatile. The commando was also a good complement to medium designs of house Steiner designs such as the Griffin and the hatchet man. With that in mind search premiere regiments of house steiner like the gray death legion used it with great effect.

    As much as the Lyrans are known for their heavier machines, they invented the first light 'mech and one the best for the next 6 centuries. 1B really should've dropped the SRM2 and the ammo bomb for an extra ton of armour and another medium laser though. Would've been a nice proto Wolfhound.

    The Commando is the perfect example of a mech designed well, after losing my for Highlanders to a treacherous Combine general one of my guys switched to one of these and stayed in it. The unit did get a few reconfigurations mostly so that jump jets could be added, but over all just how well designed and capable it is out of the box and the fact it could take on units nearly twice is weight without issue earned the respect of people that mostly preferred units 70 tons and up.

    • @sypoth
      @sypoth 2 роки тому

      The Uziel on the other hand is an example of how NOT to design a mech. It has the armor and weapons range of a light mech, the speed of an assault mech, and the armament of a medium mech. It's only use its for target practice because whoever you put in it will be on foot before they can do anything useful IF they survive. The only way to make it useful is to completely redesign the whole thing and at that point you may as well just make your own brand new mech!
      Only thing I can think of a is for it is to park it on a Ridge and use it for cover/support fire, but you'd have to replace every weapon on it with something that's actually got range and put in a targeting computer, but again for its weight class and speed there is no shortage of other mechs that can do that better WITHOUT needing a complete refit and redesign, see Catapult, see Archer, See Crab, See any armed vehicle, the list goes on and on and on. Hell bump the Weight by 5 tons and you will have a mech that can not only do the job but when the enemy gets closer you can actually engage them in combat rather than needing to constantly retreat while they are barely within range of your weapons IF that!

    i dont treat it as a scout. i use it as a jack of all trades (zerg rush) to fill up remaining points. it as ok fire power, ok armor, and very low cost. if it dies, it is replaceable. if it survives (unlikely), it deals ok damage. Not worth putting in expensive XL, FF or DHS. only worthwhile upgrade is ES

    Personally I prefer the B variant with the LL over the standard model, I just plain don't like SRM centric weapon load outs. With that said if you can pair the Commando with a mech that's good at punching holes those SRMs will find them, pairing them with a Panther or LL Jenner is typically a good idea for that purpose. The lack of jumpjets can be a bit of a pain but it's still fast enough that it's not a critical problem. Commando is solid and as a result there's really not much to say about it, it goes in and it gets the job done.

  • @hideshisface1886
    @hideshisface1886 6 місяців тому

    Commando is an ancient design and it shows.
    The original mech being armed with a solitary large laser was an interesting idea - and at the time of its introduction it was absolutely viable. Commando was faster than other mechs around in that period and a squad of them could skirmish their way safely even against otherwise superior forces, unless something was able to outrange it.
    There is also some grand irony to the fact that it was House Steiner who jumped onto light mech bandwagon first - you know, the guys known for their heavy and assault formations to the point of a meme.
    And later base variant with SRM and medium laser is a surprisingly deadly medium range combatant - allowing it to contest other light mechs, but also act as a dangerous support for heavier allies - it can scout, and move in for the kill while enemy is open for crits, or it can flank and threaten the enemy back. 10SRM tubes are no joke.

  • @warblerblue
    @warblerblue Рік тому +1

    Seems to me its original 10 tube SRM and Medium laser was a good combo for the Commando. Good close range firepower with a longer range weapon for keeping enemies a bit further out.

      @@jeffersonjjohnson How you use it depends on the variant and era. Probably the best use of the Raven in the most common eras they see use in is disrupting C3 networks and spotting for indirect fire, as most models except the initial FedCom ones are electronic warfare platforms first and combat mechs second.

    ...The number of variants of this Mech that I've fielded over the years could fill a book/video, as it is so easily modified!
    ...A very successful variant (which I tried in the 2018 BattleTech game to good effect) removed the SRM racks & ammo, & mounted an LRM-10 rack & a ton of ammo in place of the SRM-4; the remaining ton available offers a lot of options, such as a second Medium Laser, a Flamer, or even a second ton of LRM ammo. Two of this variant, paired with a 2pair of Panthers can deal out a decent amount of long-range damage for the tonnage.

    Commando has always been a favorite light. I use it as a scout, but more as a striker in medium and even heavier lances due to its ability to ambush and crit seek. Don't often like to send it alone scouting as it can get trapped due to its lack of jump jets and its speed though good but not amazing. Very solid light especially for its tonnage.

    Fast enough to be an effective scout while also heavily armed enough to put the hurt on most equal weight class enemy scouts, denying the enemy their intel by driving off or destroying their scouts.
    And if you're willing to take higher risks the commando is even capable of backstabbing and seriously hurting much heavier mechs.
    To me this is the optimal scout, versatile and cost effective.
