I love how this song so beautifully and dramatically evokes and pinpoints - PINPOINTS - the moment where the character realises he's going to die, and his death's inevitable, and nobody really cares. And there's that despair, the wonderful despair in the music that I think only Coulton can really capture in this way, where an old trope becomes something more, something you didn't really think about from both sides before now.

This was one of my brother's favorite songs. Every time you mentioned Jonathan Coulton to him, this song came on. I still can't believe he's gone. He died of a broken heart on the early morning of February 7th. he loved making music, too, and i think jonathan coulton was a big inspiration. miss you keenan.

I wonder how you'd react if you'd been there with my group at Otakon 2011. One of my friends insisted on being a ST09 Redshirt, so I decided to go ahead and buy him a uniform, Phaser pistol and holster. Then I proceeded to mercilessly get the poor sap "killed" by more than ten different cosplayers who were dressed up as everybody from Ash from Army of Darkness to Captain America. Later, at another 'con, we took another picture where he's lying "dead" and I'm scanning away obliviously. =P

No, I'm trying to drive home a point. For a community that preaches to love and tolerate, brash behavior like what was displayed is hardly what I would consider toleration. Not saying "shut up and take it" or any of that sort of nonsense, but there are much better ways of handling a disagreement with a fellow fan. Especially in a community that gets so talked down about.

My DM gave me a min-maxed Elven wizard-ranger scout to play. I had a lot of red shirts in my wardrobe for some reason (i.e., coincidentally, I always happened to be wearing a red shirt during the game). I had never watched Star Trek. It took me so long to understand why my character always had to die.

No, that actually makes sense. UA-cam supports different maximum audio bit-rates at different video qualities, 240p for example only supports up to a 60kbps mp3 track which sounds pretty godawful if you've got decent headphones.

Wait, this is based pm a Scalzi novel? I always thought it was based on Star Trek TOS where redshirts had an infamously short life expectancy...
The novel "Redshirts" is essentially a parody of the Star Trek trope regarding redshirts.
Scalzi did a Hugo-winning mind-screwing deconstruction/reconstruction of the classic Star Trek trope. It is announced that it will be made into a TV series.
Now read the book and try unraveling all the layers of meta involved in that last sentence.
