I also suffer from depression and anxiety with panic attacks mixed in. Crocheting saved my life. When I crochet I don’t have to think about anything just count and create. I don’t have any friends, just my husband and biggest supporter. I take my projects wherever I go. There are lots of people out there that will not acknowledge that they have mental health issues. I’m not afraid or ashamed to talk about them. I’ve never taken any meds to combat this, just talking and crocheting has helped me through some tough times. Kudos to all of you out there dealing with the same maladies and sharing.

Thank you for this video Tiffany. I have fought depression since I was really young. I’m 60 now and the last few months have been really bad. Along with the Clinical Depression I deal with Social Anxiety and ADHD. Right now I don’t even leave my home except for doctors appointments-and it’s hard going to those. I have my groceries delivered. I began crocheting 7 months ago. It has really helped with the anxiety, without crocheting I start having anxiety. So I can say it really does help. I’ve been meeting quite a few people in the crochet community and many going through the same as me. So this video will touch a lot of us. 😊

I am a cancer survivor and I found that crochet has helped me manage my hormones without needing so many medications. To me, it felt freeing! I'm 27 now and I'm thinking about going to school to be an art therapist. If art helped me, I bet it would help other kids too and I would be honored to be a part of that!

I first noticed the mental health benefit when I realized it satisfied my ADHD need to fidget, but in a productive way because at the end, I had an item to use or gift. It gave my need to fidget a purpose and a positive outcome. I later began to see the benefit to my anxiety and depression and even my OCD, and beyond that it even helps my physical health like arthritis, keeping my hands moving. That sense of accomplishment is such a great release of dopamine, and has also helped build my self confidence. Thank you for addressing this topic!

Thank you for the acknowledgment,Tiffany. I have struggled since my 20’s and on and off now into my 60’s. You are correct about the distraction and refocus of repetitive tasks. And accomplishment factors in battling depression and anxiety. A few years ago I found repetitive design drawing. Very helpful in redirecting thoughts. In the last couple years I rediscovered crochet through UA-cam. Never thought I could ever do all those stitches! But being a visual learner, I found great joy in the things I made with those “ fancy” stitches….And as you mentioned, color, texture and just the feeling and warmth of the different fibers can actually change the way you think and feel. And if you can share with someone in some way, the positive reenforcement can even change your brain chemistry. There is an actual science behind it. Keep your mind sharp and your hands moving! All the best…🧶👍🥰

Tiffany thank you for this timely video. Your words make me realize how depressed I am about the Palisades fire. I use down in SoCal. I went to school in the Palisades and heard the other night that my former middle school had indeed burned. The park across the street…that also burned. An episode of Lassie was filmed there decades ago (before you were born). Other places I knew have no doubt burned. Downtown Palisades was obliterated. My orthodontist had an office a couple blocks from school…it’s no doubt gone. Pali high where my sisters would’ve gone to school…who knows? And the hills….my heart aches. I use to ride those hills with my horse. The hills themselves might still be there but the vegetation is gone. Will Roger’s has burned. I spent weekends hotwalking polo ponies there. I won my first ribbon with my horse there.
I cling onto my memories because there no pictures from that era. No home movies. And as an older adult I know that someday those memories will fade.
The pain I feel is NOTHING compared to so many who literally ran for their lives. They have NOTHING. Even big name stars…they lost everything. Yes, they have funds to help tide them over for a time. But the loss they feel is the same as you and me. The reason media writes about big name stars is to put a face to the fire…that if this can happen to them…it can and does happen to us.
For now, my former home is in the evac zone. So far as I can tell it’s still standing. But I fear it has smoke damage…hopefully that can be repaired but one never knows.
I haven’t picked up my crochet in about a year. I went through some pretty traumatic stuff in the fall of 2023. Heart surgery and then back surgery. And you’re telling me that crochet might help to heal my broken heart? It’s pretty late this evening…I have some chores in the morning…but I promise to start crocheting tomorrow afternoon. Thank you for letting me speak here.

Instant subscriber. I’m a sewist and quilter that needed more travel crafts. I learned to crochet about 55 years ago from a special Great Aunt and Grandma. I haven’t made anything yarn projects in over 30 years. So last week before some grandkids time, I thought it would be fun to teach them and make some beanies. Three hats done and it’s been quite a revelation. I have ocd, anxiety and adhd and this week has been so calming. Especially while riding in the car. I’m glad to have rekindled this craft and now it can be part of my meditation and prayer time. It also seems to work with my emdr thought processing. Great video and I look forward to seeing more from your channel.

Tiffany your awesome to discuss this crochet matters. I love this because i had a very bad health problem i had loose weight and the only way i was successful to loose weight was to crochet!!!! I called it the crochet diet!!! It worked! For me. I set a goal, i got started and croched 6 clankets in one month i was so shocked everyone noticed my weight. They were so oroud of me i finally know just how essential crocheting is . Not only did i loose weight but i went back to the dr. And he was amazed how did i do that. I told him and he said unbelievable never heard that before. All of my brother and crochet sisters on this utube made my life so happy just keep doing what your doing we need each. I have crocheted for years but started quilting a few years ago and I have unfortunately let my crochet slip away a bit .. quilting can be stressful at times, but I have never found crochet to be so .. I have continued to buy yarn in anticipation of a project, so I have quite a stash .. I do believe I will start something this evening .. thanks again for this very insightful video ❤

Color affecting mood is so true - throughout childhood I vacillated between blues and purples, but when I was in college I was shopping for new bedding and found a comforter that had a lot of bright orange in it. From that instant, orange became my favorite since it's such a happy color. Might be a bit obvious from my logo colors haha.

I learned this method for my Anxiety I have three teenage boys (17,14,14,16) all very stubborn and argue with Papa a lot. My Anxiety hits the roof. One day I just grabbed my yard n it released all the pressure from my shoulders and my mind I find it's the perfect getaway so that I can focus and regroup. I used to do diamond dotz but my eyes got worse I have glaucoma and cataracts so I can't see correctly.
It gets cold here so I make blankets but lately I have added a soft sheet connect on the back. My grandsons love it, it holds more heat
The method with the yarn is excellent I recommend it highly🎉

I totally agree! When I became extremely ill 15 years ago, I could barely move my body (not depression) & that was extremely hard. I eventually picked up my crochet hook & some yarn as I'd crocheted as a child. I only managed a few stitches in a day, but eventually that was a round & then a granny square & eventually lots of granny squares to become a blanket over that year. It was a very slow process, but I now crochet nearly every day & it lifts my mood, gives me a sense of purpose as donate to a lot of charities & also reduces my anxiety levels. I'm now a very prolific crocheter. Most of all it brings me JOY in my life! 🥰Blessings from South Australia💕🐨

Survived some serious health conditions, through the grace of God and my son's support. It took me more than 4 years of recovering medically and mentally during Covid (lost 4 immediate family members and 6 close friends during that time, major grief!) and then financially picking up the pieces after.
In July '24, I finally could pick up a hook and a book and complete a row. I never gave up, I just kept trying until I felt like I could. I watched many UA-cam channels and kept crochet pattern books within my reach. My joy has always been in art and crochet, it fulfills a need in me and keeps me happy. My crochet is back and I go to weekly crochet group again. My group complains that I am setting the bar too high for them to compete making charity projects. haha. I have to remind them it's not a competition. I am making up for lost time and VERY grateful to be able to do for others again. My art sadly has not returned, but it will in God's time.
My advice: Do all that you can do, when you can do it. Strive for personal fulfillment, not attention and notoriety. Keep moving, until you can't. I'll rest when I'm pushing up daisies.

I have chronic depression and anxiety (20yrs), 17 of those yrs is due to my daughter passing away, I also have agoraphobia (past 3 yrs). I only leave the house if i have an appointment. Last march i went through a rough time and a friend I met a few yrs bk on tiktok, who i now regard as family talked me through how to crotched on VC. I made the Audrey 2 plant from little shop of horrors and it took me a while to make it, but I kept going and yes it got me through that bumpy road I was on. I am still new to crotchet and without help I am clueless 😆, but I practice everyday with different stitches. To anyone going through a hard time, please remember its a bad day not a bad life and crotcheting or any form of art/crafting will definitely help you. ❤

There are stories behind everything that you crochet. I know I have many items I've made and always given away and I made them with love. The people I gave them to also have stories. Depression is real but I never realized that crochet could help. I took a year off after my brother died. I'm back to a new project and feel alive again.

Crochet and knitting have literally saved my life - I am currently semi-estranged from my son and grandsons. When I crochet for someone; I pray. Making an afghan and scarf for my grandsons.

I'm Audhd, because of that I did receive the diagnosis of having cronical anxiety and dystimia when I still was a kid
Noone gived me tools to properly deal with it and I kind of pushed through things as I could until I couldn't anymore.
Lately I've been working on new things and on flexibility, I've been testing my creativity and giving it motivation to create and inspiration. Then lately I've been exploring my boundaries for creativity. I started doing again crafts and other arts that I did set aside in the past. One of those where amigurumi, and by some extension crochet. I never realized in the past how many cute and also useful things I could do with it and how it could help me improve my mental health.
I was never a fan of doing sweaters or other things like carpets and fluffy decorations and so on (I have rhinitis too), so I never found motivation for learning crochet or tricot but than I realized that I could do useful things that true do matter for me (like gloves, beans, pouchs, etc) or things that I find cute and apreciate the act of doing it and the apreciation of the art and the creation and it's result and that I didn't need to keep the things that I create and if keeping it I could protect it of dust or just making things that I can easily wash often.
I noticed that it's the ACT of creating that I love and that it's great and healthy, and fun (very fun), it's the enjoying the walk that is the true appreciated thing of the journey and seeing where your walk send you and appreciating the view.
I noticed how any craft may help mental health a lot and make our art, creativity, hearth sing (be happy) 😄💖🌟🪷🧘😊
I'm still dealing with many things but doing art is truly improving my helth, I can see it. The hard thing is starting but once I start to do something I feel the love and fun of it. I love it.
I'm starting to incorporate at least one creative activity each day for me to do, preferably one that creates a result so my hearth sings happily from turning the world more pretty and happy each day. 😄🤍💖🌟
