I understand what scorsese wanted with the water scene - but it doesn't make any sense. Teddy see's and interact with water multiple times throughout the movie. He swims out to the light house, he looks out over and comment on it on the ship in the opening scene. If he truly blocked it out - why would he look out over the water instead of ignoring it staying inside the ship? He also must drink water himself several times a day. It isn't even reasonable to associate a glass of tap water with the pond his children were murdered in. A body of murky water is like something completely different than a small glass of tap water. I don't buy it.
I think it has more to do with the things he subconsciously has to accept simply because of the nature of self-preservation. no matter how broken the mind is, he would still know that he couldn't walk on water, and doing so would could result in harm. same thing with the rain. Both are things that his mind can't block out. He would have to accept them if only to survive. The glass of water wasn't something that directly affected him. His mind didn't have to acknowledge the existence of the glass of water because he didn't have to interact directly with it.
@@jjdelany8130 seems extremely silly and illogical, and would not be applicable to 98% of his own interactions with water. So why bring it up?
Agreed also why simultaneously create a fictional storm in your mind … than block out a glass of water

Who hid the first clue under the tile in the missing ladies bedroom? Why would the doctors hide it in such a non-obvious spot if they really wanted him to find it and become sane again? Idk I'm on the side the doctors poisoned his mind.
He was extremely smart, like they have in their report. They had to give him clues to drive him towards his side of the reality to make it so believeable to him that in the end when they make him face the reality, his mind cannot make another alternate reality once again to fall into another delusion. The gun is the biggest example. They let him have an initial on the gun and build an attachment with him. When he fires it, he also sees blood on the doctor but the doctor is still standing tall. His mind cannot make up stories anymore and he has no choice other than accepting the reality. You may say they poisoned his mind but before he even came here, he had an irrational fear of water. In the interrogation scene as well, his mind tries to avoid water as much as he can. It is indeed because his wife drowned his children. Since the beginning of the movie, every guard is nervous around him. He even asks one of the guards and he replies that they all are. When he interrogates the patient, notice how the guy snapped? Even Laeddis snapped on the other end because even he was triggered by his own past.
Yah ! And why were they talking about a non existent storm when teddy wasn’t in the room ?!
