The RCD330 Radio upgrade for the MK6 GTI and Golf is hands down the best money I've spent on this car when it comes to creature comforts.
Got mine on Amazon for $250: amzn.to/39BZXml now $369 but still worth it! Torx T20 screwdriver: amzn.to/2Zit0ZR
This one has Android Auto confirmed: amzn.to/34RaNbi
If the one I got is out of stock this is the same unit: amzn.to/3qGARvE
Would also recommend a plastic trim removal tool like this: amzn.to/38s17Aq
Waterless car wash I use: amzn.to/3nWzIQ7

Adding Apple CarPlay or Android Auto can really make your car feel 10 years newer with a simple DIY installation that takes less than 30 minutes.
The only thing I miss from my older 1K0035274 unit is the built in navigation. Although Waze, Google Maps and Apple Maps all work really well.
Thanks to @Hayderz for their video "The BEST Mk6/Mk5 App Radio Head Unit // Install + Review" which is what originally led me to this head unit!

Do u have any idea if it works with a 2015 gti it has a screen but no apple carplay
@@alexg9163 Yes it will work with that
Can it charge smart phones?
@@samedgonul4149 Yes it does!
What about OPS ? Does it work correctly with this unit ?
P.S. Great video !
I bought this in 2018 for my 2010 GTI and I have not had any issues so far. Just leaving that out there incase someone was looking for a long term review. I highly recommend it over the stock radio! Great video!
Edit: 2023 and the RCD330 is still going strong. I also now have it on my other Golf. Definitely worth it!
Thanks Kelvin! Glad you enjoyed the video and that the unit still works well! I've only had it for a few months, thankfully still great but can't comment any further than that!
Thank you, I’m looking to buy one soon
Is it android? Can you watch Netflix and UA-cam without your phone? Can I install third party android apps?
definitely getting one for my 2010 golf 6 gti after this review. thanks bro
Do you have a link for it or a website. They all have different names it Hella confusing
Nice mention about the Dynaudio! I have the headunit as well with dynaudio for the last couple months. One thing i did notice is a bit of sound quality loss. The EQ adjustments for bass feels like it's adjusting the lower mids from the dynaudio headunit. Aside from that and a few other quirks, it's a solid purchase.
I like the style of your review! You're the reason I bought it! and now you have a new sub
Thank you very much OJ!
Good content bro! Keep that work and make more videos about your VW!!

It works with the Dynaudio and Fender sound systems flawlessly because those have have an external amp located under the driver seat

Like the role playing :)
This video is actually how I discovered the RCD330's existence, and after just freshly installing my own unit into my 2015 Beetle, I can say that it is extremely worth the price! As he said in the video, the installation was easy and all the functions from before like the steering wheel controls and AM/FM radio are maintained. Android Auto also works flawlessly for me with my Pixel 4 XL. For anyone wanting to modernize your older VW, I'd say this is the perfect way to do it without breaking the bank!
Thanks for this comment, I’m also looking to install in my ‘14 beetle
Any idea if this works in a 2018 beetle? Will the rear camera still work?
@@jusegozu The 2016+ model year Beetles utilize the MQB-style plugs for the radio, and all of them have MIB units in them, at least here in the States. I know the base models don't come with Apple CarPlay/Android Auto in all cases, but unfortunately the RCD330 would not be a simple plug & play with newer models and would require quite a bit of adapters and such. It probably would be best to buy a new MIB2 unit directly from VW if you want to keep the OEM look and functionality.

Really nice video. Couple of questions. Looking to upgrade my 2009 VW Tiguan that came with factory Premium 7, Dynaudio, Sirius and No backup camera. Hoping this is plug and play as you say. I am assuming I would just leave my Sirius cable disconnected and just use the Sirius App on my iPhone. Couple of questions for you. 1) Your section showing you use the steering wheel buttons - Can you use the "Phone Button" to answer calls from the steering wheel? I only saw you use the button for Siri and also adjust the volume. Do you have a backup camera? If not, do you get the message on the screen saying "No Camera" when you go into "Reverse"? 3) Call quality w/ the built-in mic - how is it? 4) At night, do the buttons illuminate Red? I hope so as my 2009 has the rid illumination vs the white. Lastly 5) Now that you have had the unit installed for over 1.5 years, how is everything working? Thanks very much. Once they are back in stock I will be ordering from your link in the desc.

Hey man
I just bought a polo gti 2012 and i wanted to upgrade the radio For that one
But will I lose the parking sensors on the original radio ?
Great review! Two questions, will this work with Fender audio system? and also is the stock bluetooth separate from the car play bluetooth?
The stock bluetooth is different than the head unit's. The bluetooth module for the stock one is under the front passenger seat and can be just disconnected. Otherwise you'll have two devices trying to connect to your phone with the old one not being useful.
I'm not entirely sure how the Dynaudio system is set up but the Fender systems use an external amp located under the driver seat so it should work just fine with no irregularities
I have a 2013 vw golf 2.5L 4 door and how can I tell what generation it is because I see some things that say it’s a mk6 and some say it’s a mk7
awesome, thanks for the video. i installed an rns-315 in my vw cc about a month ago, and am just not impressed with the nav function and the screen size. looking at your video, i'm definitely thinking of trying this one out. it looked like in your video the rcd-330 needed only the quad lock wire bundle from the old unit and not the green sat radio or blue gps antenna wire. did you leave those in or somehow get them out? i had to add a gps antenna wire with the rns-315 i installed and basically just stuck it in the dash well behind the unit. also, have you had any problems with the usb charging function?
Hey thanks for watching! I haven't had any problems with the USB charging thankfully. I left the GPS and sat radio cables in there just tucked behind the RCD330. If you're in the USA and ordering from Amazon I really appreciate you using the link in the description and subscribing :)
Hey Great Review! I have a 2010 Volkswagen Passat do you think this would work for my car?
Thanks Robert! Yeah I think it would! Double check with the link I put in the description. The amazon listing says which years it works with
if you live in a frigid winter area (canada, northern US, russia, etc).. the Desay model will sometimes reboot while the car is still cold.. nothing can really be done about this. and im not sure if this affects the noname brand, but i went with desay for the extra 512M+ of ram.. plus i dont have android 😜 so no need for Android auto
Hey, great video! I want to install this in my mkv GTI and I was wondering if the USB port on the head unit charges your phone as well?
Hey Chris! Thank you! Yup it charges your phone as well automatically through the USB port.

i have a isuse with this. I did have the RNS315 (Same headunit that was in this car before upgrade) And it's works but i cannot get radio stations Working. Do i have to connect the old cable's that doesn't go into the new unit in somewhere or what? 🤔
Has this unit given you any trouble? Or have any glitches? Going to order myself one to replace my red 310 and hoping it’s as good as it seems online. Great Vid👍🏼
Thanks Dylan! Let me know what you think once you get it. Thankfully mine has still been running perfectly however I drive the GTI a lot less now since I bought an 04 Cayenne Turbo
For my VW jetta 2015, the current unit has a button for Satellite Radio (Sirius). Do you know if you can use Satellite radio with the RCD 330? Or will I have to stream Sirius through my phone connected to the unit?
Hi! I have a 2013 Beetle Turbo with the Fender Audio System, will this radio be compatible with my VW? My main worry is the Fender system😅
hello @shouldigetit . Such a good review, quick n simple. Just one question. I have a 2015 Passat with the fender system and the old school full size touchscreen nav radio (rns-510) all I wanna know is, will the original harness plug right into the rcd330? Thanks!!
Can you DM me a photo of it on Instagram?
Does somebody know if it works with the VW rear sensors, for back the car. I have a VW Passat 2.0 TDI 2010
What about the rear view camera? I have a Golf GTI MK6 2012 and would really like to maintain this feature on my screen. Btw I find your video both instructive as highly entertaining. Xlnt combo
Thank you Frank! In terms of the rear camera the unit does come with an adapter which lets you plug it into the back of the RCD330 and I’m assuming it turns on when you go into reverse so long as the camera is plugged in. My car doesn’t have a back up camera so I don’t know from first hand experience. There’s more info on the amazon page which is in the description. Thanks for watching!

Hey Carina, thank you! Yeah it should work in a MKV! Double check in the info section of the amazon link I have in the description. I actually emailed Carplay2Air and they said it wouldn't work since it's not a "factory install" but I actually do think it'll work since it's a VW radio.

Should I Get It Reviews - Digital Radio in the UK.
Will this still utilize my rear view camera on my CC that’s built into my emblem?
It really seems that easy, as it is assigning itself to the 56 Radio. In the case of the creator you will still get an error in the gateway (control unit 19) as it is missing the 37-Navigation. And if you want to have telephone showing up in your speedometer add the 77 control unit, just in case you didnt have one before. For all of you who want to keep your car clean of errors, remember you will need someone with a tool like VCDS to remove the 37 from your gateways intallation list if you previously had a navigation system installed.
For those of you who still want a navigation system, the Discover Media PQ is your choise. Today it can be unlocked via software quite easy. With it you will get navigation, a radio, carplay, usb ...
This unit can be either be installed as 37-Navigation, 56-Radio and 77-Telephone or you can just map it as 5F-Information Electrionics 1 (MIB2) if you updated your gateways software and hardware (7N0 907 530 B? , be carefull if you have or want to have assistence systems(55-Xenon Lights, 3C Lane Change, 13 ACC or A5-Camera)THEN YOU WILL NEED ONE WITH HW INDEX AN, SW can be flashed for these up to BR). If you have traffic sign recognition you will have to replace your camera as well (new Camera: 3Q0 980 654 (L)), bringing some new problems but also really nice features like adaptive steering to your PQ vehicle.
If you want to have more details how, just ask me :)
I have no idea what you're saying at all. These numbers all sound like VCDS coding tips? There is no coding required with the RCD330 and no errors either. Does sound like you can bring back the mid-gauge cluster screen functionally which is cool.
@@shouldigetit If you mean the screen in the speedometer, when it is not showing any information of the radio there then must be a coding error in the RCD330. There should be an option in ODB11 or VCDS called "Messaging via Map" (At least in the Discover Media PQ it is called like this). This will activate the communication with the speedometer again and Radio and Music should show up.
Even though there is no coding required for it to work, that does not mean your car doesn't throw any errors. You are not informed about every error in your car. In your case i am 99% shure, that your gateway (Unit 19) has the error "Control unit wrong coded" as it is missing the navigation system of your RNS3XX. Its not a critical error, but still it should be corrected by removing 37-Navigation from your installation List.
So essentially, if you install this and you have navigation on your current display you’ll have to clear the errors in order to have the music pop up in your driver digital dashboard? Also, I have a 2014 VW CC, is this model compatible with my OEM back up camera?

I really wish there was an upgrade path that was this easy with the mk7. I have a 2015 Golf, and the MIB1 radio is pretty meh. I'm currently putting all the bits together to upgrade to the MIB2 for Carplay plus all the extra goodies, but it's $$$. If you have a mk5/6/Beetle/Passat, this is a great upgrade!
Seriously! I almost bought a 15 GTI but then saw how much work it is to get to MIB2 and decided against it.
I'm possibly looking into purchasing a Jetta 2013, just waiting to hear back from credit union, so I was wondering, will this work with it 2013? This video is a great help to help me decide that I do want it, but I'm just unsure if it'll work with the car itself, yaknow? Thanks in advance, and keep up the great work!

Hey Justin, good question! I am driving my car a lot less now due to Covid and also buying a Porsche Cayenne Turbo recently but this head unit still works as well as it did day 1 for me. No issues thankfully. Bluetooth connection is good, charges my phone 100% of the time, Apple CarPlay works well, etc.
Will it affect my Fender audio system or backup camera in any way? Do all of them come compatible or are then only one that’s compatible with a backup camera. If so can someone leave a link to the certain radio type please
I just bought the RCD360 and works perfect with fender audio. The rear OEM camera will not work as it is RGB and this radio only supports AV. I just bought the radio and the rear camera for 430usd in Amazon.

Do you know if that parking system runs through a n RGB cable? Sorry I am not sure and don't want to mislead you.
I am considering this unit for my 2013 Jetta. I noticed that your vehicle, like mine had a CD player in it. Does installing the new unit eliminate the CD player? Not a huge deal since you would be gaining so much with CarPlay and I don't listen to CDs anymore. Thanks
Hey Cody you're right! The new unit does eliminate the CD player completely so you won't be able to play any CDs but you can use CarPlay, Bluetooth or even insert an SD card with music if you want. Thanks for watching! If you order from Amazon please use the link in the video description :)

Did you notice any changes at all in the Dynaudio quality? I have a 2011 w/ the Dynaudio system and I keep reading online that people have to use vcds to code it to work the same or not have butchered sound quality. It's also the only reason I'm hesitant to purchase.
Hey Nathan so I was also super hesitant to purchase because of that but I haven't noticed any sort of difference. I usually keep the EQ on "Pop" and it sounds A-okay to me.
Great video thanks! One question wondering if you can help my 2013 polo has back parking sensors would they still work? Thanks
Thanks Robbie! I'm not sure about the sensors unfortunately as my car didn't have them.
did you find outt if sensors still work?
So if anyone could help that would be great. Does every RCD330 keep backup camera functionality? I have a 2015 Jetta SE with Navigation and backup camera.
It comes with an RCA adapter for the backup camera so you should be able to plug the camera directly into the back of the RCD330 with that adapter. Hope that helps Kyle, thanks for watching! It says on here amzn.to/2P9c4iD that is supports the rear view camera in the product description up top.
Hey! I really enjoyed the vid but before buying it I got a question. so my 2010 golf VI has both front and rear parking sensors and my RCD 310 shows what sensors are sensing when I get close to stuff like for example when I'm parking. so would I lose that around view if I bought this head unit? thanks in advance!
Hey Zaza, thanks! I'm honestly not sure as my car didn't have the parking sensors. Do you also have a camera or just parking sensors? This forum post might help www.vweosclub.com/threads/should-i-return-the-desay-version-of-the-rcd330-for-a-noname-version.35588/
@@shouldigetit just parking sensors.
Is this only for apple phones or get android phones too?
Hi, does anything need to be done to the infotainment system in the glove box for this installation? I have a MK7 VW Golf
Hi Bill, this will NOT work in a MK7 unfortunately. The infotainment system in there is wired differently and more integrated with the car (sport mode, air conditioning, etc)
What about battery drain? I see this all the time and maybe it's just on the mk5's but the CANBUS has to be updated? Anyone know? I'd like to do this upgrade myself.
I haven't experienced battery drain but hopefully someone with a MK5 can comment on this.
The spare blank button on the head unit can you get a button and program it to open waze?
I don't think so as none of the buttons associate with Apple CarPlay directly other than to start it but that is an awesome idea Adrian! If you figure it out somehow please do let me know.
Hey great vid do you think it would fit in a 2007 vw polo
Yes I do! Check the amazon page to double check
Does it fits for Golf 7 (2014)
Would this radio fit into a 2015 Beetle? Every video I've found in regards to this radio shows it in a Jetta or Golf, but I just wanted to double-check before making this purchase.
Hi Chandler if you have an instagram send me a photo of your current radio and I'll let you know. My username is @ACarPhotographer
Where did you pick up this unit? How is it working now? Still like the day you got it?
Hi Angelo, got it on Amazon. I put the link in the description to the listing. It was working great when I sold the car a few months ago.
Hey, for me the microphone button on the wheel on my VW does not activate Siri, it just mutes the sound, is there something to activate somewhere ? Thx
Hold the button for a few seconds
Does the reverse camera work without having to get dongles, adaptors and re-wiring etc?
Yeah it includes the 1 adapter needed to plug in the reverse camera.
I am wondering if a usb to Bluetooth stick would help with getting rid of the cable ?
You can get a wireless CarPlay USB adapter if you’d like.
I have a 2013 Passat SEL TDI. Will this unit work with my car? And, will the backup camera still work/be viewable?
Yea and yea Chris!
-Ben
Question, does it support back up cameras too? I found one for my 2011 gti and want to buy/ install but I’m concerned it doesn’t support…
Yeah it comes with an RCA adapter to plug in a backup camera.
-Ben
this is truly the best CarPlay installation in any car I've ever seen!
Thanks Luke!
@@shouldigetit I bought it and installed it and it works great!
Hi there l have just bought a VW golf se 2013 so will this system work in my car?
Thanks in advance
Yes it will! Thanks for watching Piper
Hello, just installed this in my 2013 mk6 GTI and so far I can’t get it to stay connected to Bluetooth or get the car play to work. Also when I plug my phone in, it’s not charging. ??? Any suggestions?
Seems some of the cables maybe pulled out of the connector while you were doing the install or maybe you have a low battery somehow? Any luck since commenting this?
