I remember when I was about 12 years old when I heard "Patches" by Clarence Carter for the first time, the song hit my little pea brain so powerfully that I cried. 41 years later, this song did the same to me( I have a bigger brain now though). No other song has ever had such an effect on me. The funny thing is I've heard this song before, by Lou Rawls and Randy Crawford, but Ms. Flack's rendition just does something to me. Thank you Mr Smith for posting this version. Thank you, Ms. Flack, for crooning a timeless ballad. I love you, God bless you eternally.
One of the greatest interpreters of song in our time. Saw her at a fundraiser for Harlem Hospital at Riverside Church in 1977 where she opened with a cover on Melba Moore's hit "I am his Lady" and Roberta's cover was to this day the most perfectly rendered song I have ever heard. Her musicians looked almost like a random assortment of folks when they preceded her to the alter in the sanctuary of the chapel but when they picked up their instruments and she sat at the piano and sang that first lyric, she had us all for the rest of the evening. When she finished that first song, there was a moment of silence as if none of us could believe that we had just shared such an exquisite moment as her FIRST SONG and then the applause thundered so loud that they shook the stained glass! She never recorded the song and in many ways it made her performance of it even more special. It always seemed to be a mark of the greats that they could perform a song that someone else made popular and do it so much better that you cannot go back and listen to the other singer's version. What a brilliant talent this woman is.
And it also shows just how much Ms. Flack admires those artists herself; and how much their music touched her heart, that she would cover their songs. ❤️💫✨
What an awesome memory that you - and a relatively small select few - have of Miss Roberta. She was indeed "one of the greatest interpreters of song in our time".
I first heard this song about 15 years ago and thought then how true it is. I’m 75 years old and think is an appropriate song for the times our country is in now. A beautiful and poignant song. Just love it.
I met Roberta at the Aspen airport in 1990, and when I told her I loved her, her singing, her songs, and especially this one, she gave me a big smack on the lips ! My heart still races at the memory.
@randyisfrank1. I GATHER THAT GESTURE WITH YOU "FROM HER",OF HER"....FROM Roberta Flack. She was SOOO SOFT SPOKEN. EVEN HER LOUD OR RAISED VOCALS HAD A "SOFT, CASCADING EFFECT"! A BEAUTIFUL WATERFALL OF MELODIC, TEMPERATE BEAUTY AND QUIET BUT FORCEFUL PURPOSE. LIKE A VIOLENT, HARSH, BITTER, GUSTY WINTER STORM IN A BARREN REGION OF THE WORLD......THAT...."SERVES PURPOSE" FOR SO MUCH "LIFE" THAT MUST....WILL BE PRESERVED FOR TODAY, NECESSARY FOR TODAY. TOMORROW AND OF COURSE........ALL OF OUR UNITED "FUTURE".🤔🤗😳

WELL STATED, DECLARED, EXPRESSED, TYPED, RESONATED. We have SO MANY ARTISTS, STORYTELLERS, HECK PROPHETIC EXPRESSIONIST! I AM SO GRATEFUL FOR MY TIME GROWING UP....... ESPECIALLY THE 70'S. I WAS BORN IN 64. CIVIL RIGHTS IN THE 60's to CIVIL UNREST IN THE 70s AND THE JOURNEY CONTINUED. I absolutely LOVE Miss Roberta Flack, Unfortunately she did not get the recognition she deserved but hose of us who know the quality of her music will always recognize the meaningfulness of her music. Trade Winds is one of her treasures!!!
This is the most beautiful song and sadly after 43 years nothing has changed ! I played this endlessly in 1972 and thank you for sharing this on UA-cam. I wish someone would start a campaign to bring this song back as it is even more than relevant today! Beautiful haunting song and their are no words for Roberta's voice. I was lucky to see her in concert in the 70's and she was mesmerizing. No one sings like Roberta!
I wore out my share of pieces of vinyl back in the day, too. I love any and everything by Roberta and Phoebe Snow, but "Trade Winds" is one of my favorites. You are correct about this song being timeless...it should be used as an anthem or something. I think the youth of today could learn a thing or two from this song. I've met Roberta several times and she is a lovely, genuine songbird. Thank you for sharing this fantastic song.
She sang this a longtime ago. It still is pertinent. I love the way she delivers the message. I cry every time I sing it. The children of rich and poor are looking for the truth and if they don’t find it, god help tomorrow’s youth! I loose it on that line!
This song clearly paints the true picture of today's society, hate mass shootings and all the political unrest that's reaping havoc on our daily lives which in return only brings heartache and sorrow ,it's as if we have to ask ourselves do love exist in this vacuum of a bitter society, this is surely the tradewinds of our time.
I’m pretty sure it was the B side of “The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face”. I had the 45, too, and I played Trade Winds ten times more than the A side!
One of my all time favorites. As true now as it was 20+ years ago. Lou Rawls and Randy Crawford also have great versions. Our young ones need honesty and guidance as well as love..
After all these years, it seems that people still aren't listening. This song along with a few others, explains in detail the troubles that face our youth. We can teach our babies how to "TWERK" (whatever the hell that stands for), they can repeat verbatim "Tom Ford" but have no idea nor an ear for the conscious truth told in this song. How sad.
Thank you Ms Roberta for your beautiful music and inspiring lyrics. May the Grace and Peace of GOD Almighty, the God of all gods, save you through Christ Jesus our lord and give you joy and the peace that excels our understanding.🥰😊🙏😊🥰💖💖💖💖💖
I have been looking for this song for a long time. thank you for posting it . this song was the song of the graduating class of Overbrook High 1973 also it was the in our year book the song is a timeless jewel. just like What's goin on by Marvin Gaye. thank you

I came here from Randy Crawford’a beautiful cover from 1981, all those years I didn’t know it was a Roberta Flack original, until about 5 years ago. As far as the lyrics go, some things change, but these words are truer and unfortunate the last decade then even back then in the 70’s and 80’s. All of our traditions that our parents and grandparents us are blowing out with the tradewinds. The present young generation has no clue what’s right and wrong these days.

Les dejo la traducción de esta bella canción
Vientos alisios
Aquí estoy mirando
Mirando a mi alrededor
Mirando a mi alrededor
Mientras me rodeaba
Soplando a mi alrededor
Mientras me rodeaba
Never stop listening
Very nice song
this is the first song I ever heard Roberta Flack sing, my play mom Barbara Lewis was listening to this. It changed my life 4 ever! The girl is bad!
This explains the problems in our societies today. Is anyone taking notice of what this social scientist, Roberta said decades ago?
