His demons were that his daughter died; hers were she wanted to hurt Marty for hurting her. In what world are those two the same, and in what world is having someone knock on your door when you’re piss ass drunk, and forcing themselves on you knowing they’re attractive and that you’re too drunk and vulnerable to say no, you using them?

  • @endurance24601

    Rust doesn't care being "outsmarted" by Maggie. He cares being manipulated by her. There was always an undercurrent of attraction, may be something more, between Rust and Maggie. For all his faults, Rust wasn't a liar. And Maggie sensed it. Hell, so did Marty, who was riddled with his own guilty conscience and was aware of his own cheating and Rust's brutal honesty.
    Maggie went to Rust, made him vulnerable by faking her own vulnerability, had sex with him and told him point blank how she used him to get rid of Marty.
    And Rust doesn't care he was "outsmarted" by her.
    He cares he was used by her, she used Rust's feelings for her against him to get rid of someone. And that someone was the closest thing Rust ever had to a friend.
    It is so cruel on so many levels.

    Just love the fact that he knows she outplayed him, probably the only person to do so, and used him for her own agenda which he probably despises her for, but can't find it in himself to be mean to her. I love how he just ignores her questions about him because he knows that they're probably 98% fake and just tells her that he's heard her life is well and that's good. He truly is one of the best fictional characters, in recent memory anyway.

      Marty Hart : Blamed me? For what?

    Maggie: - Rust, nice to see you
    Rust: - Bullshit...
    Rust's main issue with Maggie it's not about being outplayed by her, it's about making him betrayed his friend. "Marty says the girls are doing fine, that's good", he never asks how is she, he points out what's really important to Marty. Rust still respects her and makes her a compliment by "classing this place up", but he wants to make clear that Marty is his true friend

    • @ExtremeTG
      @ExtremeTG 8 років тому +29

      I think Rust main issue was with Maggie being able to toy with his emotions and the fact that he give in and essentially a 'pawn' in the game Maggie was playing to get back to Marty. Rust wasnt hurt by the fact that he betrayed his friend, he was more hurt by the fact that Maggie used him. Rust did tell Marty that he was an major asshole who made a good women (Maggie) to do what she did in breaking up their partnership.

    • @augustoalvarez82
      @augustoalvarez82 8 років тому +60

      Rust was definitely sorry about what he did to Marty. That's why he "held back" when they were fighting (they talked about this in the car), after the fight Rust just decided to quit saying "Fuck this world... Nice hook, Marty", just a way to express he had remorse of what he did.

    • @Torgo1969
      @Torgo1969 7 років тому +11

      +RopeDrink Agreed. It amazes me that so many commenters are so clueless about this. It's like they are so socially awkward that they can't comprehend the obvious irony in Rust's words, and that they seem to not remember Maggie having to apologize to Rust after she seduced him. "I'm sorry, but thank you" is what she said. And now Rust can't stand to be in her presence, and she knows it.

    • @augustoalvarez82
      @augustoalvarez82 6 років тому

    The bottom line is she used him even though she appreciated him a lot, but she made the mistake of manipulating him in order for her to get rid of Marty who he himself was the notorious hypocrite lying cheater. Rust was upset because he lost a friend because of it, but made the choice of falling for her trap which he could've walked away from which was difficult. All three people made mistakes on this one

    • @Halloween111
      @Halloween111 6 років тому +20

      That was the great part about the characters in this. There is no "Hero" exactly. It's not that simple of a series. These people, though you do root for them, are imperfect and sometimes make shitty decisions. They are more real than the cookie cutter Hero/Villain model. The series itself isn't black and white either. I think of it as a horror story wrapped in the guise of noire.

    • @tiaaaron3278
      @tiaaaron3278 5 років тому +20

      This is the most accurate description of thiz situation. But I think Maggie and Marty were such dicks in the aftermath. Rust accepted his own mistakes but those two did not.

    • @3star2nr
      @3star2nr 5 років тому +4

      Maggie made no mistakes. She always knew what she was doing, and every action was calculated.
      Rust is mad because he knowing better couldnt resist the urge to self destruct. This is the biggest weakness of humanity that he detests. Losing Marty as a friend just made it worse.
      Marty was just a dude that wanted pussy and a quiet trophy wife... A wolf doesnt become a poodle because he puts on a ring. Instead of being a self parody he should have embraced who he always was, like rust tried to. Marty's problem is that hes incapable of introspection, and doesnt plan. Hes pure impulse.
      The relationship between all 3 is a key part of the overall story. It highlights all the different types of human personality traits. The cold bloodied psychopath Maggie, the overly analytical introvert Rust. And a guy incapable of processing guilt, and works purely off impulse Marty.
      Incredible writing

He was a bastard in his own right but did not deserve to be caught between their BS only to be used as a scapegoat, losing both of them and his job in the process. Worst of all, how Maggie took advantage of Rust when he was drunk, docile and miserable- she damn well knew he'd never go along if he were sober. Imagine Rust had taken advantage of her like that. Makes me sick. Honestly this scene made me both sad and shocked at her audacity, haha. Maggie's mom said earlier in the season that she has a tendency to tear others down with what she can't control. When she went to cheat on Mary, which fairplay to her because her husband stayed cheating. She went after his partner, while he was drunk and pretty much preyed on his vulnerability. She couldn't control Marty and his cheating, so she had to bring someone close to him into their mess just so she could end it. It was a calculated move and she had amazing timing to get to Marty drunk and vulnerable.
    I think people saying Rust is mad because she outplayed him, I don't think is the case. She used him to get back at her husband, thus destroying the friendship and Rust pretty much saying "I quit". He definitely had a choice. But I don't think it would have went down that way if he was sober and in his right mind. Like I said, she preyed on his insecurities and the fact that he was drunk. Where she could have just served him with divorce papers. Dragging Rust into it, when he said repeatedly to both of them that it is not his business was wack and it spoke to what her mom said to her early on in the season.

    I don't understand why the fandom despises Maggie so much when Rust himself (whom the fandom whorships) thinks she's a "good woman" till the end of the series, and Marty clearly still loves her (tho I feel like more in a sense of family, not so much in a romantic sense anymore, you see how he doesn't pay any mind to the wedding ring on her finger, he just smiles at her and his daughters) and she loves him just the same, she covers for him and she goes to see Rust out of worry for Marty. Watching the series and not being able to get past Maggie's human flaws, when they never stop showing you other characters flaws... It blows my mind, I don't get it.

    • @agentwrench
      @agentwrench 4 роки тому +15

      @@lucasmoreirasantos8377 absolutely. It makes no sense to like Marty despite his (many, many) flaws, and then act like Maggie's one act of revenge is unforgivable. I think part of it is because the story is told from Rust and Marty's perspective, so you empathize a lot more with them, and then the other part of it is prejudice, probably unconscious, but prejudice all the same. For me, at one point of the series (specifically when he grabs Maggie by the neck and it's apparent he would physically hurt her, if she hadn't stopped him by threatening him) I didn't even feel like Marty could be saved as a character, in the sense that I didn't think I'd be able to like him ever again. But I think most people, seeing him in the 2012 timeline, are able to forgive him, or at least I did.

      i think a big part of it is because not only did she cheat, which in this case, fair enough, but she went out of her way to bring someone else into it and destroy the other persons friendship and partnership. To be fair, rust absolutely had a choice in the matter and fucked up, but she went OUT OF HER WAY to do that.
      She's also a minor character compared to rust and marty, so one of her only major moments in the show is doing something that most people find shitty, where we see a lot more of the guys, both shitty and good

    • @agentwrench
      @agentwrench 3 роки тому +2

      @@sparky918 her one shitty act pales in comparison to Marty's long path of shit acts. People who see her character through that one moment of her life and ignore everything before (the many years of being cheated on and putting up with Marty's shit) and everything after (her worrying about and caring for Marty in the 2012 timeline, long after their divorce), are either not paying attention, or blinded by sexism.
      Also yes she went out of her way to fuck Rust, it wasn't an accident, it was her plan, to make Marty mad enough that he would leave, cause she had tried leaving him before and it hadn't worked, cause she let him back in, cause she loved him.

  • @ryuray1677

    Although i can comprehend why she would choose to manipulate Rust and hurt Marty in the most effective manner for lack of a better term, being cheated on twice makes you vulnerable to debauchery i suppose but i couldn't help but think she was utterly shelfish, Marty given his proclivity towards obsessive possession over his ladies, whether they be his daughters, wife or mistresses, he would have reacted pretty much the same if it were the man from the bar, he would have flipped out either way. This woman however, did not for all her intelligence, give any semblance to the situation the lads were in. I was so mad at her, the reason being that if it wasn't for her poor judgement, Rust would not have been discredited, he was utterly invested in the case and he was inching closer to crucial clues. He needed Marty's support to succeed given his friction with the higher authorities and they might have helped save countless lives.
    8 years...........this woman broke their bond that left Rust unemployed (not that he had any intention of staying on the force to begin with, did better off without being a member) but more importantly alone. She used his trust, and yes Rust was just as much responsible for the choice, but he was a mess working on a case as evil as it was and everyone on the force calling him a fool for his structured theories including Marty, dealing with his past both as an undercover agent and the loss of his wife and only child. I don't blame him, in comparison her problem of a cheating husband seems trivial. Infact that's how she broke him when she says, "You should not have to live like this" pretty low move, woman.. getting him to reflect on his vulnerabilities. I developed more respect for the character after this scene, because he was a perfect gentleman, most people in his shoes would have been a lot more resentful. If it wasn't for the fall out, i wonder how the case would have escalated.......Maggie is projected as a perceptive character, am I to believe that she did not foresee how this blunder would affect everyone involved, I'm sure she had an inkling of the severity of the case after the Ledoux debacle. Rust has every right to refute her attempt at camaraderie. She's got a long road to climb in my opinion.
