The First Descendant: Nexon Aims for The West with New RPG Shooter

- Опубліковано 28 гру 2024
- Revealed during The Game Awards 2023 last December, The First Descendant is an upcoming looter-shooter RPG from Nexon and one of the South Korean company's first forays into the console market space. Due out this year, this free-to-play third-person multiplayer shooter is hoping to attract players within the Destiny 2 and Warframe community and newcomers alike. And after playing the game for a couple of hours, we're inclined to believe Nexon is on to something here.
Ahead of the game's release, Game Informer editor Wesley LeBlanc traveled to Seoul, South Korea, to visit Nexon and speak to some of The First Descendant's leads about what players can expect, its plans for the game after launch, and more.

to give you an idea of what these devs are like, in the cross play beta the biggest thing people complained about was how there was nothing to do in the open world. So they split it up into slightly smaller areas and added repeatable mini missions onto each area. In the technical test people did not like the paint system, the limited inventory space or the battle pass coins, and they just announced they have removed the random paint acquisition, increased the default inventory and totally removed battle coins.
They actually listen to the community and make changes from that feedback. They dont always get it right, but they do listen
that doesnt really say much apart from the fact they listen to complaints, the thing is these were obvious issues by simply playing the game and whats WORRYING is the fact they needed us to tell them when they didnt know about it which simply shows an issue for continuous development and cash shop items down the line. now i dont know if nexon played a part in the color bullsht but it was obviously a bad idea from any idiots perpective lets be honest.
as for the minigames they are boring grindfests and is simply go here and kill everything that appears nothing new and they didnt ADD anything extra to these minigames since if you played the tech test you would know . they MOVED modules that were acquired somewhere else and put them in minigames instead so you now have to grind a boring minigame for them and not just that you need to grind a specific minigame multiple times just to be able to do the 2nd minigames which actually drops anything you might need since the 1st one gives literally nothing of real use.
so if you think these are good things i dont know what to tell you. these arent improvements they are just adding more grinding factors so that you are more likely to fold and visit the cash shop. this is my opinion.
in reality im sure the devs would like to have their way with the game and actually make a better game but im sure budget and time constraints and the fact they have to please nexon is the biggest wall they face.
@@snowyfang EVERY SINGLE DEV and i mean every single one does this. It blows my mind too how some games release the way they do but nonetheless they do and always have communities complain. 90% of devs ignore the issues. The fact they make change is only a good thing and games releasing with awful systems which makes you wonder what they were thinking is nothing new Some examples - MWII terrible in so many ways the devs refused to change them. Diablo 4 100s is design choices almost no one liked. EAFC 24 no explanation needed, Battlefeild 2042 - launched as maybe the worst game that year and only with feedback could they make it remotely playable.
@@snowyfangimagine being this confidently unlikeable
Seems like this game is getting a pretty decent marketing push. As someone who lives in the west I've been really excited to play games coming out of Korea, they all kind of have a breath of fresh air to them. Looking forward to trying to TFD
The Decentdant
Fresh air? Normally they are grindy, pay-to-win disasters. Hopefully this is different, but in general, Korean games are trash. Lies Of P and Stellar Blade are two of the few exceptions.
@@mattspeer01when it comes to Korean MMos it will be heavily monetized . Always been a thing for the past 10 yrs .
As a beta player, I was thoroughly impressed with the gameplay experience. The technical test further heightened my excitement for the upcoming full release. I am eagerly anticipating the game's launch, hoping for a release date in late June or early July.
I didnt get to play the technical test on pc, how much has changed, better or worse since the steam pc test?
I played this last BETA that was available for 48 hours and I loved it it scratched so many titches that you get from something like Destiny, War frame and the Division.
Really glad to see the dev themselves playing and testing with controllers so it's gonna be fully optimise.
Wesley’s got style, I can see why you wanted him in front of the camera. I think it’s interesting they listed some bad examples like Anthem as inspiration too, hopefully they can learn from rather than find themselves making the same mistakes. That grapple mechanic where you break away their defense looks cool, I want to see more fun interactions like that in the future too, really helps sell the power fantasy.
Regardless of Anthem's shortfalls, Its combat, mobility (on-ground and in-flight), and world design were best in class. It's overall concept was amazing. It was EA/Bioware's execution that was terrible. It falls into the status of one of the greatest "What ifs" in gaming.
anthem isnt quite a bad example. it was solid at its core, just poorly executed
honestly after playing two betas one in fall of last year and the final beta test just a week or so ago there has been a massive improvement and they've actually listened to a majority of feedback and made positive changes, I'm looking forward to seeing what they say in june and the release of the game!
Found this video through the zine and am really impressed with Wesley here, being good behind a keyboard, camera, and mic are all individually difficult things, good job Wesley!
I genuinely hope micro-transactions don’t end up killing this game, as the first open crossplay test they did was probably some of the most fun I’ve had playing a game in awhile, I never wanted to put it down.
Buy or don't buy them. Let the whales be whales. It's f2p. So we are definitely going to be seeing $20 skins and such.
From a f2p game micros are gonna be based around skins, convenience, and or materials for Dicendent legendary variant. Kinda like Warframe and their Prime versions. Overall, not bad, and I'll spend a little because I enjoy it. Spending on a good game isn't bad long as you're not going crazy. Hope this helps ease your concerns for micros. 😁
0:39 wait are those ideas for future interception bosses? they look dope i can tell because their shoulders seem quite highlighted, also the cape on the left monitor is that a back garment or for one of those bosses? looks sick.. this video is a gem mine! i love how the devs look exited.
I like that the developers are listening to player requests & mmorpg are my favorite genre too
If the monetization isn’t super ignorant. This game has massive potential to compete with the Destiny and Warframe
If they could translate tht Destiny's fps into a 3rd person to make engaging team based endgame pve raid like contents with puzzle, mechanics, dps sections, this is going to be special.
And avoid any pay to win while just keeping to decently priced cosmetic store.
Played on Open Beta game was really fun, hopefully it's going to be a good one after official launch
God bless the based Eastern game developers of culture giving the people exactly what they want.
I loved this game when I saw the trailers and then when I tried one of their betas on PS5 I loved it even more. I can't wait for this game to release publicly assuming servers will hold just fine
Played both CBT and the Final Test a couple of days ago, the improvements they made to the game is insane, specially optimization, really good work on that part. Another good thing, they're listening to the community, they got rid of the gacha color system they were trying to implement, they're improving inventory, UI.
Really good job Devs, they have a great project, if the skins have a price range of $7 to $14 will be amazing, i really want more people to enjoy premium content on this game! BUT Nexon is behind, that scares the crap out of me, i don't want to fall in love with a game just to know that they're closing it next month. They did this to Veiled Experts and Ghost in the Shell, both solid projects.
As i said multiple time, wish you all the best Devs and looking forward to June 7!
I never seen this before now, it looks awesome. Great video. 🎉
Thank you!
@@gameinformerPLS, Make Glay powers Red again i love her concept.
So glad it’s coming to all platforms. This studio really understands gamers
I want to hug all of em this game im very ready for !
2:10 Always cool to see Blender used in a professional environment.
Absolutely amazing what this has gone through in development.
This definitely has so much potential. Excited for the 7th !!!
I’d love for this to fill a gap that was left by The Division.
Here’s to hoping that they have a polished product as we approach the launch date.
As someone who played all the closed tests and open ones i am excited to see what comes for this game
Played the beta last year and it's honestly just Warframe, but with a Korean cosmetic take.
I agree with other commenters. This looks like it wants to fix the problems of Outriders and Anthem and apply the fixes to a Destiny-like base. Excellent recipe.
Good interview. However I wish you would have asked them about microtransactions for crafting, color mods, and inventory space.
Color crafting gacha is the most awful thing in this game
Yea, pretty sure they wouldn’t give a straight answer so it’d be pointless.
@@Qballiz2kool You have a point.
@@solncezar1156 Agreed.
@@solncezar1156apparently they removed it, check the dev talk on their channel though
Gameplay-wise it's pretty fun and the different characters feel very varied. That said I worry about the monetization. We'll see what happens but for now I'm keeping my hopes up.
Bro this is a free to play game, they need to make money Loll
@@HashashinFGC Where did I say they can't make money? Nowhere did I say they shouldn't monetize at all.
How is it going to run on XB1/PlayStation 4 seeing as it was developed in Unreal Engine 5..
badly 😅 tbh I really feel like they should drops those versions altogether it's not gonna be a good experience
tried it last beta, and it good! turn off brain and shoot stuff.
the game is fast-pace with high-mobility
I really wish they would put these bosses out in the world to be encountered. And then after you beat them you can fight them for more rewards in these instances. The world felt really dull and empty the few times i played the tests. Adding the bosses in them to occupy and roam a zone would really liven things up
Visually stunning
June 7 lets go played 3 betas game is so cool the gun play feels amazing i be maining fyra the toxic lady
Wait, it's coming out on the 7th?
@@tiger751 made mistake its been announced when on the 7th but should be soon game already available on xbox to add to your wish list
@@iTzIronPedro Oh and to dispell the confusion, the RELEASE DATE reveal of The First Descendant will be announced on June 7.
The game will release on Summer 2024, but the exact date on which the game is released, WILL be shown on SGF.
"Nexon" hearing these is enough to make me walk away
Let's go TFD!
just remember, good mmorpgs came from korea back in the day. Hopefully we can get good games from them again
Its nice to see game devs that actually play video games for once :D
This game is lookin so good
Man, name dropping Hellgate London, that is deep cut!
as long as they dont go overboard with the ingame shop. also they need to fix the armor paint situation. the current version is terribad.
i'll get excited to check out anything that's inspired by warframe, looking forward to seeing this game in action.
Game is pretty good, but damn, knowing that its nexon we all knew its going to be a money grab.
Thank you for this interview!
It looks promising, I'm very interested in this game!
You guys visited Korea.
It's late, but welcome.
I really hope they don't do the "Korean MMO Formula" of design with Green, blue, purple item that have no meaning until you get Orange item where you have to upgrade it to +5 +10 +15 +20 etc etc with fail chance so they can milk the player base on P2W. It a bad design that give korean mmo a bad name.
That all the Korean MMos games have 😂. It part of their formula to making these type of games .
you guys should more of these style videos , especially From software
Não vejo a hora de jogar esse jogo joguei o beta e gostei parabéns pelos os criadores do jogo
Will it be more like Outriders or Destiny when it comes to the gameplay loop?
Outriders end game was bland af . With very few builds you got to use to progress farther in tiers . It had a good gameplay .
@@partyboy1076that doesn't answer his question at all lol
I'm here for Korean Anthem.
Korea should make more singleplayer games, their MMO market is terribly saturated
Nice interview snag. Korea and China are looking interesting for games.
Don't F*CKING do that man. Don't EVER lump China with South Korea. China's already trying to STEAL everything South Korea is and call it their own. Don't F*CKING encourage them.
please i want this game
june 7 check their channel just announced
I’m pretty sure that was pre recorded before final beta test
@@iTzIronPedro But that's not the release that's the day they say when the release is.
@@Riddletold funny game already on xbox store to put on wish list so it should be soon
Waiting for Mommy Viessa so I can feel the chill 😁
I played warframe for years and got bored, and destiny never got me, I really hope The First Descendant gets the love it deserves.
I played hell lot out of the 1st 2 betas, but the recent technical test only spent 1+ hr. Read that the in game store was getting a bit too much. I'm not looking for a grindy job.
At one Point the Game felt pretty good, at the other it felt pretty "cheap". I dont know if its the lack of animations, bad weapons sounds... everytime i was hopping into the game, and went back to Warframe for example, it felt like a AAAA Game in comparison to the first descendant.
I think the Developers were focusing on finish the Game "core" mechanics toofast, instead of improving the overall Quality of the Game. As it's still not a bad game, there was even a kind of GATCHA system later on, which maybe many of us Western Players don't expect when playing such a Game..
So yeah i have mixed feelings about this, and if its gonna be able to survive in western Market.
But it is free, so everyone can make his own opinion about it.
I really wish Hellgate had done well. Also love mmorpg but they are so disappointing now that I am glad this is their attempt to offer something like that.
I need this game :D
I listen to vids in the background when I do stuff so always bummed when there’s no audio translation in these interviews
Anthem for ever.
The beta was the worse experience in a shooter but I'm hoping things have changed for the better.
I don't know about the game it looks great and it looks like it plays well but it being free to play kind of draws me away from it. But I do wish the game the best.
revert the skin paint system 🤡 imagine paying real money for random, one time, use colors
they changed the RNG and give you more areas to farm it
@@ohhzymo5829 I'm willing to pay for it but not gamble for it.
In Black Man’s Land 😀
Korean's are slowly taking over Japanese games. We are tired of the same White Washed Japanese characters and black stereotype characters like Barrett...then we all pretend it's normal and not racist. Korean's have shown much promise and the only issue they have is P2W which doesn't have to be bad "Warframe".
Dont forget Nexon is the first company gave us real money gacha system in game history.
People need to be aware that this game will be heavily monetized.
destiny on ue5
😊❤
lol if they didnt mention warframe and destiny i wouldve said big cap. threw me off when the first thing he said was a game i never heard of before
they seem very consumer friendly, like they really want to just make some fun games. i hope they do something with the colossi. i think the live battles in the open world and around the terrain is hugely appealing like they showed in the trailer. the void intercept battles by comparison are disappointing to say the least. i know thats more or less the plan but we shall see how its executed. especially come launch. also they needa take the autotune off of seneca. its just not it. the bad lip syncing is also definitely jarring.
Enough of the tease and denial from these developers.
0:12 Looter Shooter Free to buy ? I'm out!!!
물총같은 타격감좀 ㅠㅠ
One thing I love about Korean Games is that their Characters are not WOKE 😊
you mean were most games have gender lock? makes no sense..
@@sethael1741 there’s a difference between WOKE and Gender 😌
@@GyanPrakash really? and it has nothing to do with eachother?
Please do more of these digital exclusives! I’m 32 and I’ve been following GI since I was a tadpole in 2003. There has still been nothing quite like your publication in the last two decades.
This game has a 90% chance of failure, though I wish them success who doesn't like to play hot characters.
Historically, developers who follow trends without innovation often fail. While attractive characters in games like Warframe or Destiny 2 may sell in the short term, long-term success still depends on gameplay.
Moreover, if players dislike Warframe's and Destiny's monetization, why would they choose the more notorious Nexon?
I played the open beta and technical test, the shooting and moment to moment gameplay is excellent. Descendants are varied and movement is fantastic.
But the downfall of this game is the unnecessarily convoluted resource and crafting mechanics, there's like 10 different resources for everything and some crafting is time gated.
Battle pass is also so confusing where you not only need to level up the pass, but use currency to claim the items in the pass.
The UI is straight up mobile game design and screams predatory microtransactions. Not to mention some skills that could be named differently (Shock Nuts anyone?)
I really loved my time with TFD but I can see this game failing outside of Korea due to the reasons above. Core gamers are very sensitive to these things and will make it known.
In the recent dev stream they said they are getting rid of the coins for the battle pass and we can just level up to get the rewards. They are also working on the UI to make it better. Those are two of the things they talked about in the dev stream.
If they’re aiming for the west, are are the characters so generic looking…
So , Warframe ?
The finals SBMM made me stop playing that game.
Nexon=P2W 😢
Besides Stellar Blade, does South Korea only produce Live Service Games? Because let's be honest, a lot of them are trash
Are there any characters that represent the rest of the world... I have only seen generic looking western yt characters so far.
Of course not 😂 fuck you think
I am all in if they at least allow SteamDeck's player to play, unlike Destiny 🤮
This game really sucks
I played nexons latest 3rd person shooter, Veiled Experts. They shutdown servers in less than a year👍
Most generic looter shooter to date, delay it and actually add some flare to the game.
aims for the west but game is already fils with microsansaction.
They should've aimed at making a good game instead, because last beta this was hot garbage.
상대는 넥슨이야 속지마 이것들아 ㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋ
i hate Nexon due pay to win shit they do in their games
Looks like Destiny & Warframe had a baby. The artists are great but the art direction doesn't feel original which can bore the audience.
that game looks so bland and generic, it cant be only me that sees this wtf
The graphics look impressive, but I prefer it to be single-player only. PvP often leads to spending money on items to stay competitive.
There's no PVP, it's a PVE only game
gameplay felt clunky in Beta and still looks clunky to me
Please no! Why design a looter shooter after bad games like Destiny and Warframe. Instead developers should model after awesome looter shooters like Division. I feel like game development is regressing lately, instead of progressing. That's what happens when you pick the wrong role models.
I love the division! However, I love destiny lol
One could infer that they’re looking to those games and trying to find aspects that worked and were successful, and hopefully trying to iterate upon those ideas. There’s also something to be learned from seeing someone do something wrong. No game should be off limits to learn from or improve upon.
You definitely didnt play the beta. The game is kinda fun
No way u picked a dead game over 2 massive looter shooters 😂
The Division really hahahaha
It looks lame
This game looks so generic and blend... it lacks the depth and atmosphere like destiny has.
Looks like another game for ADHD kids
Looks like crap.
