- As we approach Halloween, Fresh Air is revisiting a 1987 episode with horror director Wes Craven, who revitalized the genre with his "Nightmare on Elm Street" and "Scream" movie franchises.
Craven has been called the Sultan of Shock and the Guru of Gore. In this interview, he talks about working his way up in the film industry before unexpectedly getting the chance to direct "The Last House on the Left," which was a controversial success with its graphic portrayal of rape and murder.
This interview originally aired July 30, 1987.

Fascinating interview! Wes had a very deep mind. Within most of his work, there is a depth that isn't always recognized; a psychological, philosophical, and mythological depth that undergirds most of his cinematic oeuvre that seems to speak to a more Gnostic worldview. This I feel is what makes his output so unique, timeless, and even pressing. Its that urgency of the Ancient Gnostic message for all of humanity to WAKE UP from the nightmare which is our world, to dispel illusions, and confront reality head on. Wes himself says it perfectly at 11:31.."Are we going to be awake? Or are we going to be asleep? And, the only way to get rid of the bogeyman is to stay awake. Not to fall asleep. Not to dream him away."
Dude still dropping bars almost a decade after his death. R.I.P Wes.

This interview took place in ‘87 lol
@@puxtbuck6731 And your point is? What does this being made in 1987 have to do with how one should conduct an interview? Not that I agree with Copper, but just speaking if he or she is telling the truth here.
So glad that I bumped into this. After hearing this; his message seems so obvious that I am embarrassed it didn't occur to me.
hello
