    Lucky the coolant freezing did not destroy the engine.

    The very first winter expedition truck journey through Russia I came across - I have been waiting for this! Such a unique experience. Thanks so much, and for the effort filming in such extreme conditions.

    Yep, that's pretty cold looking!! Great vids BTW, I'm really enjoying your way of presenting this fantastic adventure & it's good to see you also include the not so fantastic moments, I feel it's kind of an education to any prospective travellers of what can and will go wrong on such an endeavour. Also I just wanted to praise you on your camper build, she looks really good and well prepared. I bought myself a Zil 131 a little while ago with the intention of making it into an overland camper but she's just too loud and uncomfortable for long trips, although with the governor uncoupled the old v8 does get up some real speed on the open tarmac!! ;-) Should have gone with a DAF though....as was the original plan. Looking forward to your next installment! Good luck & stay safe.

      John Chilton Thanks John. Feed back is appropriated. The Zil is a nice looking truck. Bet it’s pretty good off road. The dafs are pretty loud as standard. I spent about 3 days sound proofing it. About £300 of sound proofing. Made a big difference.

    Matthew thank you for the videos, I have only fallowing you and just escape for a short time but what stands out the most to me is that you don't sugar coat anything you tell it how it is both the good and the bad things unlike other youtubers only show the good side of overlanding, I'm in the process of selecting a truck to build and in a couple years hitting the road myself. I live in Oregon ( USA ) and plan to head to Alaska to get the feel of the truck then I'm heading south to cross the Andes and head to Patagonia then off to Africa. I cant thank you enough on the information you let everyone know.

    What you call as do others is called """ Mineral Oil """' there is NO dyno's in that crude, it is the Second most plentiful liquid in/on the earth. Water being the Most!!!
    I have my mostly winter front on in Oct, with the lower part on when > -20C. It surprises me as to how cold most diesels are run. Bad deal the clutch going out.

    Awesome, Great video. Just be careful with that top handled chainsaw, they pivot on your wrist and as a result give some very evil and very dangerous ‘kick back’! Can I also ask what drone you’re using?

      PJ Outdoor Services Thanks for the warning. I watched some videos on their use . The short bar chain saws can as you say bite you pretty quick. I am very cautious. Thanks . I’m using the DJI mavic Air. Not great in windy conditions but it’s a nice compact size and good battery life.

  • @JonSnow-bc6ro

    Do they not sell winter diesel? Also diesel condition er ? Aka I call it diesel dope.
    It stops your diesel from congealing and I think water. Come oct/nov here in Canada I keep 10 bottles in my truck and every fill up I add conditioner to the tank.
    Also does your truck not heat the fuel ? I drive a tractor trailer semi transport here in Canada. We get -40c all the time in winter. Have seen many southern US. Drivers up here in middle of winter with frozen trucks and gelled fuel.

    • @matthewpayneadventurerfilm8902
      @matthewpayneadventurerfilm8902  5 років тому

      Ron Birchard hi Ron. Thanks for comment. So the Russians are use to the cold, like the Canadians. So we didn’t really expect problems with the fuel. Yes they use winter diesel but it seems not good enough. On inspection of local trucks you find insulated fuel tanks and I guess a heater somewhere. We also used additive when the fuel out the pump wasn’t winter diesel. We never intended to be in these temperatures. But various delays meant we were late leaving this part of the world.

    • @robertwhalley882
      @robertwhalley882 4 роки тому

      So if I understand correctly, with good winter fuel, diesel dope and a fuel pre-heat you have no problems in -40deg C conditions to run your trucks? Anticipate being in similar conditions and am starting to research what I need... anything else that is vital? thanks

    • @JonSnow-bc6ro
      @JonSnow-bc6ro 4 роки тому

      Robert Whalley - for some reason I can't read all you wrote but from what I can read...
      You just want to take away any possible problems for winter driving
      Check your coolant to be good for -45, maybe flush the system too. Have a winter front on. Diesel conditioner to stop gelling and moisture in fuel. Airline alcohol if you have air brakes. Maybe a block heater if you got electricity or coolant circulation heater. A diesel heater is probably built into your truck engine or do you mean for your interior compartment? There's after market stuff for that. There are also magnet heaters (electric) that come in handy cause you can place em where needed. The above stuff was stuff I did when I drove semi trucks in northern Canada and on ice roads. Oh snow chains are good to have. I alway had with me a emergency winter kit with me, dry food, clothing, candles matches fire starter sticks, axe wire wood saw..
      Basically had almost 3/4 of my winter camping gear
      Having that stuff saved me as help found me 5 days after a major blizzard sitting around my fire, drinking tea and cooking a rabbit.

      Barry Wilson 🤣. Maybe they are luckier and have less problems. Yes, I think you are right. Travel is a combination of highs and lows and dealing with difficulties. They may be mechanical related or an issue at a border or even being stopped by police 👮‍♀️. Which happened a lot. But always for a look at the truck and a chat. Russians and Kazakhs were great.

    If that isn't a good justification for having a wood burner then I don't know what is!
    Love the height of the chimney, how long did it take before it got walloped?

  • @ploglet

    Do you have a wood stove inside the camper or only diesel or propane for heat? Seems like a wood stove would be good - should you be able to carry small amounts of wood.
