Thanks for the nice video. I found this after being bewildered by the 4k of it I saw in Barnes and Nobel. They all looked squashed and this release is also wider than any other Criterion... or any other of my disks period! I can't imagine why they did this. Just stick it in one of those sweet slipcases. Also- the Criterion website makes no mention of how this is packaged, which is BS.
Strange packaging for sure, but the content is good which is a saving grace I suppose.
Excellent review James for one of my favourite films, I am thinking of picking this up in 4k as last I had it on regular DVD, the hoopla on social media about the packaging had me concerned, as wacky as it is, I am glad to see that it's not really a deal breaker for you.
Packaging is odd but definitely not a deal breaker, Zakwan given the quality of the film and 4K picture and the supplements. Stapled booklet is cool too.
It looks like a thick booklet. You always get so happy whenever you get a thick booklet.
There’s an article in Wall Street Journal a while ago about the physical media going green by eliminating plastic in their packaging. The new CDs pretty much come in cardboard sleeves now. I think movies are going that way too
It’s a decent thick stapled booklet so I was happy 😂.
Green initiative could be the push behind the packaging in this case to your point. Will be interesting to see how that progresses into the future with Criterion and other label releases.
James apparently Criterion are testing out new non plastic packaging so we will have to see if they repeat this on other new releases. Danny Boyle has his 2nd film in the collection my fav DB films 28 Days Later, Shallow Grave and Sunshine.
Steve, it will be interesting to see is this type of packaging comes in future releases. Thanks for sharing your favorites from Boyle.
Love your video James. Crazy that this movie has a packeting that can glow in the dark. However, I only heard that it only sells in the Criterion website. Even though mines' doesn't glow, I am happy that I got a copy of Trainspotting.

I want this release, I’m on the fence whether to order the US 4K or wait for a potential UK release, it’s only a couple of pounds more to get this version imported than it would to get a native UK release, also I’d like to see your thoughts on trainspotting 2 from 2017

Nice1 James 👍Trainspotting is an amazing movie...intriguing, fun and cool characters, thought-provoking subject matter and a simple but well executed story with a perfectly matched soundtrack. I'm not the biggest Danny Boyle fan and I never liked "Shallow Grave" (for example) but "Trainspotting" is a classic ! It's depressing and baffling that Criterion have deliberately dropped the ball with this horrible packaging though...I think that will put many potential buyers off making a purchase (myself included).
Hello, TigerBlue! Yes, Trainspotting is a fascinating film indeed. The packaging is strange to say the least, but what you get in terms of the 4K disc quality and the features makes it worthwhile in my estimation.
@@20thand21stMovies The disks themselves are housed in cardboard sleeves and I find that unacceptable for Blu-rays let alone 4Ks...I'd be constantly worried that the disks would get scuffed every time I took them out so there's no way I could keep them like that. Also it's basically just a big carboard envelope which is fine if it's a birthday card and you're just going to throw the envelope away but when it comes to collecting movies, especially when it comes to premium labels like Criterion, I feel like a carboard envelope is very sub-standard. This is just me though, if people are fine with the packaging then fair enough...the movie itself is fantastic (I saw it back in the day at the cinema and I also have the Film-4 blu-ray edition of it) so I can totally understand people wanting it in their collection...but if this sells well (at full price) then I fear Criterion (and other studios !) will see it as a green light to adopt this "cheap cardboard envelope style" as the "new standard".

Hello there. I believe my copy froze once. I don’t remember at what minute point. I didn’t seem to be a persistent issue in the case of my copy.

Thanks James for the review. Cult classic film. Sounds like getting the $20 dollar bluray is the way to go unless there is a massive difference in picture quality which is unlikely. Does the packaging actually glow in the dark?

Hello, Henry. I believe this film can be streamed on Prime Video or Pluto perhaps. Worth looking into.
If the blu ray is good enough, I will get it instead of the 4K !
Hello, Juan. Yes, since the blu-ray has the same 4K restoration it should be a solid picture as well. The step down in resolution to 1080P and SDR vs HDR may not represent a huge difference for most.
