Love this review. I'm sold on picking this up next sale
Sounds good, Adam. I hope you enjoy it!
Nice review, saw it couple months ago on Criterion Channel, so it's in my buy list. Beautiful costumes, set, design, cinematography, all good enough to own just for that almost, but as you say the story, acting first rate too. Haven't seen Last Emperor in couple or three decades, but remember being very impressed.
Agree, excellent film and powerful story. Looking forward to checking out The Last Emperor.
Great review James!!! I just saw this film last year in the theater. It has become one of my favorite movies of all time. A brilliant epic!!!! I still need to watch The Last Emperor on the Criterion Channel.
Glad you enjoyed the review, Archie! Farewell My Concubine is indeed brilliant. I too need to watch The Last Emperor soon.
Thanks for the review, I was looking at this title along with Last Emperor when I visit the states in a couple weeks. Even without 50% off it's still cheaper than buying in Canada direct.
Little sidenote as I see there was some trouble with pronunciation. Typical Mandarin names are 3 one character/syllables but with the introduction of chinese auteurs during the 90's most western studios would 'Anglicize' the names by bridging the last two characters. So Chen Kai Ge [hard G] and Cheng Die Yi and so forth. The first character is the family name.
Glad you enjoyed the review and thanks for the note on pronunciation. I need all the help I can get in that department 😂.
Just picked this up the other day had a 50% off sticker even though the sale had ended I’m excited to watch it
Hope you enjoy it, Daniel!
Still waiting for my copy!
I hope you enjoy it when it arrives.
What a powerful and beautiful tragedy. Ironically enough I saw this movie today in one sitting. I have the Blu-ray and it looked absolutely amazing. Given how much color this movie has I wonder if they didn’t want do use Dolby or HDR and effect the authenticity of the original release. Just a thought. I appreciate the review!
Glad you enjoyed the review, F V! It’s a beautiful film and looks terrific on this 4K. I do think HDR could have given a little more punch to the colors but that’s probably a nit pick. Very powerful film.
Ive became a big Hong Kong Cinema in last few year’s.
Lot of great films from HK for sure.
