  • In this Episode, I give you the Pros and Cons of Aylmer Island as an anchorage. I am covering the various anchorages starting at the closest anchorage to the Nepean Sailing Club and going to the furthest. Be forewarned that I am not a fan of Aylmer Island as an anchorage. I am not sure why it is so popular when there are much better anchorages further up river. It is OK as a stopover anchorage to have a BBQ at, but I do not believe it is a good anchorage to try and sleep overnight on your boat.
    Future episodes will cover better anchorages like Pinhey's Point and Constance Bay. To follow us you can go to:

      Glad you got to use this episode as a time capsule of a past time. Very cool.

    I believe they found a ton of bones and artifacts on this island way back in the 19th century! Although not great for sailboats, it was somewhat significant to the area, in one way or another throughout history.

      Thanks. I am keeping it up. Just not on that body of water anymore.

    Hi , as always great vlog and very good info, only thing is my yacht is in sea water and it`s a pit far for me to sail there from Melbourne, Australia.

      Hey Capt. Yes, these info videos are mostly informative for those that are on the Ottawa RIver. Although the warnings about now sleeping in an anchorage surrounded by rock with bad holding, is probably a universal truth. :-) I hope at least the drone portion is nice to look at even if the info on the anchorage is not really relevant to a person living in "the land downunder". My next episode will be more of a VLOG with Janice and I showing what we did last weekend at Constance Bay and how we find the local trails to walk on to try and get in our "10,000 steps a day".

    Nice video, I am thinking of kayaking across the Ottawa river at this point. I have already done it further northwest around from Constance Bay across to Quebec and back. I was thinking this looked pretty safe and have the halfway point of Aylmer island to rest just in case. What do you think? If I am going more or less a straight line from Ontario to Quebec with going past Aylmer island, are there rapids anywhere or strong currents? This is a regular plastic kayak and not rated for whitewater or ocean.

      Lot of people kayak back and forth. It is really safe as long as you do it on a nice day.

    Nice video. Especially enjoyed the animation/graphics. What software do you use?

      Hey Pau Hana. I'm glad you liked it. I use Final Cut Pro for the editing and I use an add on program called mCallouts Tech for the things I point at that move with the object as I pan around.

    Hi, Do you plan, or have you made videos about other islands up river? I'm thinking of going to Allen Island by Luskville. Have you been up there? Also where did you get your chart for lac deschenes? Navigating blind makes me kinda nervous. Thanks for the videos!

      We go all the way to the Fitzroy Damn. We are land locked so we couldn't go further north than that. That was the main reason we subsequently moved our boat to Kingston so we could have limitless water. 6 yrs of being landlocked was getting boring. :-)

    Top video as always. Just a noob question, the chart plotter/GPS you use at the beginning, that you manipulate with your fingers, is that the same touch interface as a smart phone or tablet?
    If so then could you buy an inexpensive stylus pen which eliminates the fingers in the camera view?

      Thanks. That is just an Ipad with a navionics app. So there is no way of using a stylus. At least on on the Ipad that I have.

      I realized in my holiday a few weeks ago that the navionics app for android is basically the same map material as on our raymarine chartplotter (besides the chartplotter on the chartersailboat had no updates for some time). really good/actual map material for our region: isola de capraia and surroundings. i used navionics boating europe on an galaxy a3 and it was totally accurate.
      so here is the link play.google.com/store/apps/developer?id=Navionics&hl=de

    Is it okay to cross the danger zone when riding a jet ski?

    I wrecked my prop there, backed up slow saw 18 feet then dropped the outdrive and almost stranded...

    Shirley's Bay is nice too. Any horror stories from there?

    • @Bowmans-Woods
      @Bowmans-Woods  8 років тому

      Hey Brent. I am sure there must be some, I just haven't heard of them. I think the allure of going around the left side of Aylmer Island is too tempting and people can't resist the urge to find a sailing path through. Since it is rock it can go bad fast. We only hear about the mishaps though. I'm sure there are a bunch of people that have it mastered. Perhaps Shirleys Bay is more of a mud bottom. When the few people that venture in there hit something it is probably not season ending.

    Where would be a good anchorage point that's nearby?

    • @Bowmans-Woods
      @Bowmans-Woods  7 років тому

      +Jean-Pierre Levac . On Aylmer Island? It is soooo small there is only one place to anchor. Where our boat was in the video. On the east side. The west side is all rocks.

    May I ask when did you learn how to sail?

    • @Bowmans-Woods
      @Bowmans-Woods  8 років тому

      Years ago I took a Keelboat sailing course and then I spent a couple of season crewing on other people boats for race nights. That's all I had before I bought Off Duty 6 years ago.
