Playstation 3 HDD vs. SSD comparison - Backwards Compatible

- I decided that the best way to see my Playstation 3 out in style would be a harddrive upgrade. I'm using a OCZ - Vertex 2 vs. the standard 5400rpm 120GB harddrive that shipped with my PS3 Slim.
Check out four different comparisons (including GTA V load times) to see the difference.

The real difference is visible when you play a game that is installed on the hard drive. In this video you play the game from the disc, after which reading the blu-ray is the rate determining factor.
Hi this video was originally posted in 2013 so at the time the SSD's were just arriving and we were letting people know if a difference existed.
@@backwardscompatible6502 I know that, I'm just saying that you can really tell the difference if you play the game from the internal hdd and not from the blu-ray. This video implies that there is not much of a difference, but the difference is tremendous.
in the case of GTA V most of the game files are installed on the hard drive only assets that are streamed like music and video are actually directly taken from the blu-ray i believe
@Thomas J Shears why not upgrade to a ps4 or just have both
@maurice exactly!
most of these PS3 SSD vs HDD comparison videos from 5 to 6 years ago were done with the disc game which makes the experiment redundant 🤦♂️ there are many of these older vids that got the same redudant false results.
The SSD is a must have for your PS3 of you're playing your games digitally. The difference is night and day. Look it up on YT; Just ignore most of the older videos from 5 -6 years ago
The XMB being way faster at loading stuff up is what I need.
It's quite a bit faster. The PS3 was not designed to support the faster SSD speeds, so I guess the SATA interface is 2.0. Still not that bad.
Maybe if the console would be converted and read from the ssd would be a constant 30 fps in games
I was surprised it wasn't even faster, as I would have expected from an ssd. So I did wonder where the bottleneck was. And, as you say, if the PS3 uses a sata 2 then that's definitely the problem which is going to stop the ssd being used to it's full potential.
Finally you spoke the truth . Ps1or ps2 or ps3 with ssd lol
I heard that PS3 is stuck at SATA I
@@lilblucommi4779 sata 2
System: PS3 3001-B with FW 4.80
Game: Blu-ray GTA5 with update 1.26 and similar SaveData
320GB 5.4K Hitachi: Load from XMB to in-game ≈ 2:15 min / Switch Character ≈ 16 sec
Samsung 750 EVO 120GB: Load from XMB to in-game ≈ 1:30 min / Switch Character ≈ 8 sec
GTA5 Digital Download:
Samsung 750 EVO 120GB: Load from XMB to in-game ≈ 1:10 min / Switch Character ≈ 5-6 sec !
Indeed, there is a difference, but keep note that PS3 has SATA I (150 MB/s) and a good notebook Hard Disk (let's say Western Digital 1TB Black Edition, 7200rpm, 2'5") can reach this speed. Of course, the SSD wil be faster because of higher speed accest time compared with Hard Disks.
sata 1 dont matter ssds in ps3 take advantage of it textures load almost instant and load times faster and installs faster and less stutter
The random perfomance of an SSD is much higher. This is the reason why it is loading textures faster.
I'd do it because ssds don't have moving parts so less chance of say like the motor burnt out or the read head messing up and that does happen with use, rare but happens a 360 hard drive I ran into the drive is dead and the 360 saw that and gave me a e68 error?? I forget the code but that's a mechanical drive specially it almost looks like backwards compatibility is out of the question sadly so to play your games from older consoles you can do it on some but the oldest ones are the ps3 and xbox 360 and them being plagued by a hdd well yeah it kinda sucks. Oh and them being mechanical you can break them if they fall not that you would put them in a spot where they'd get dropped but ey I've seen consoles that had soda dropped on them so there that. So yeah I'd do it so they can last forever because both Microsoft and Sony would rather paywall them and give SOME to us not all and I've already have like oh.....none of the backwards compatible games I've bought that would work on the series x
Ps3 програмное не дает hdd разгоняться выше 5400
No seek time is the advantage of an SSD.
I notice when you update gta v to 1.27
The load screen take more time
Can you do a compare to disc to digital version of gta 5
christian crow it’s basically the same
@@fuantei7283 euh yes it's the same
@@fuantei7283 PS3 doesn’t like SSDs and will slowly murder them so SSHD is the way to go on PS3 as they improve load times.
I’ve have gta 4 and 5 on ps3 digitally so when I first got it last year even tho I had one already the hdd was horrible and eventually corrupted so I installed a cheap s$p 128 gb ssd sata 3 helps very much with textures and reading the data so I get a more a constant 3
24-30 fps
1:22 SSD 1:45 HDD
Hello broo so i want to use ssd
Is there any frame rate performance from SSD
No since consoles are usually capped in their performance. Black Ops 2 for instance is using Vsync which caps it at 59fps constantly. But if you would disable the vsync using mods it can go up to around 80-100 fps.
Short answer: no ssd does not impact your frame rate, just speeds up loading times.
@@TriiCkS-YT thanks fro the information
I know this is super late but I just swapped my PS4 internal hard drive for an ssd and swapped the PS3 internal hard drive for the PS4 stock drive. Happy with it as long as I don't have to worry about space on my PS3 instead of the 160gb hard drive that the PS3 had in it 😅😊
One question.. Does the gta 5 game runs better with ssd or is it just faster loading that is diffrence btw hdd & ssd?
I notice my ssd in my ps3 slim speed up the load times but also stop the graphic spawning/popups
@@BrannanClark3027 its because the ps3 used the hdd as part of the graphics processing in some games. Thats why the popups are gone. Same thing with running gta 5 on xbox 360 off a usb vs hdd. Ps3 will benefit the upgrade with certain games. Black Ops 3 is another perfect example
Ssd dumbass
@@matthewpeck9515 you really came hear just to say that

I thought of putting in SSD in mine. my fan got very loud when playing GTA5 yes day does it help from getting to hot I have ps3 80 model plays ps2 games. I bought it used 6 months ago
Your correct that a HD will produce more heat than an ssd but ime just playing games can get the fan going. Every year I have to strip down my ps3 and 4 to clear the dust from the heat sink radiator. You just cant clear them properly from the outside. An unforgivable design flaw in consoles these days. You would be forgiven for thinking they are designed to overheat after a few years to force users to buy a new one! Anyway, the PS4 is the hardest to strip down. The ps3 is very easy.
It might be too much for the PS3s older hardware also I've hear of people having SSDs go out in that generation of consoles
@SuperLolMine Don't you think that ssd has a good chance of preventing YLOD? As SSD's produce less heat than HDD?
Also it helps online games by a lot battlefield 4 was 23 hz on hdd then 30 hz with ssd
Not really worth changing from HDD to SSD, this video saved me the time doing it for myself :)
Lol its way worth changing to SSD trust me you can clearly see its so much faster
@@IIHydraII I have spare SSD's sitting here in my draw. It's just not worth it lol.
Not like the difference a SSD makes to an aging PC.
@@ihave7sacks It will make it last way longer and less chance of corrupting.
@@lewis571 Well that's just not true.
SSD's have a limited write cycle.
@@ihave7sacks you still get a constant 30 or 60 frames depending on what game it is of course. The frames drones are cut by at least half and frame drops are at a higher frame. In game Loading is a lot better. Games like fallout 3 heavily increase from an SSD. Oh and no noise.
i didnt think thered be a noticeable difference for ps3
You have 2 photos exta in hdd.
Its not gonna make a difference if you start it from a disc.
ssds in ps3 take advantage of it textures load almost instant and load times faster and installs faster and less stutter
Not much of a difference
Спасибо за видео.👍🏼
I expected the ssd to be a lot faster tbh
The PS3 sadly has a SATA I interface with the storage device, that's why it is hindered.
SATA I provides 150MB/s speeds | PS3
SATA II provides 300MB/s speeds
SATA III provides 600MB/s speeds | PS4
NVMe PCI 3.0 provides 3500MB/s (3.5GB/s)
NVMe PCI 4.0 provides 7000MB/s (7GB/s) PS5
@@lewis571 makes sense

not very impressive ... so SSD's are not worth it ?
+Rasti Al performance is enhanced but if you are expecting a huge leap then you may be disappointed.
alright, and thanks for the well made video !
It's the hardware. The ps4 and pc is better capable of making use of the ssd.
PS3 uses SATA I interface that bottlenecks the SSD, I would increase the storage space rather than the speed
the super slim supports sata 2 or 3 I believe
ps3 not support RAID mode so ssd drive is not used at full speed, even ps3 bios still using an encrypted file system thus make it slow when any user loads xmb; if any body here had an xbox360 we can see that loading menus are faster with an mechanical hard drive and remember xbox 360 uses 512MB ram and ps3 only uses 256MB ram.
But the ram difference is made up by the cell processor. Uncharted 3 would NEVER run on an Xbox 360 without significant lag for this reason. Ram isn't everything when your processor is meant for super computers.
@@Mattchu.the.Pikachu cpus meant for super computers aren't always the best for gaming but the cell processor manages to do the best for both worlds somehow
Though i hear its a pain in the ass to program for it
@@Fogololmy point is because of the cpu it can do games impossible on Xbox last of us and uncharted 3
@@Mattchu.the.Pikachu i understood your point, the cell processor indeed makes games like uncharted 3 possible due to the way it is designed, but what i said isnt about that, i was just mentioning that it is built similar to a server cpu but gives amazing gaming perfomance

I searched if i could use an ssd in a ps3 because i want to buy another one and mod it somehow to be a little faster and mod on it. And here is a video they shows me the answer.
its better if you install the game digitally.

HD Sucks
You guys have to understand. PS3 was made around 2005 or 06. SSD weren’t even around at that time. So yeah the difference of load times is not worth it in my opinion. It’s just to old
i just installed one, it´s like heaven!!
Not saying it doesn’t do anything but it’s just not worth the money.
@@villarrealr31 depends on how many games you plan on playing on it, a $20 120gb ssd is enough for all the more I'll be playing on it, which isn't much and the hard drive that was nearly dead when I got it, I had to replace it so i figure, why not?
@The Reaper95 Even if you need a 240gb ssd, a kingston one is only £30, or $30 if you live in the states.
Well you guys all make a solid point. If it’s only 20$ then go for it. I haven’t bought an SSD in a while so I guess the prices have changed a lot
