    SSD also has extra quality of life improvements: the PS3 is less noisy because it no longer needs spinning the drive to read / write; and also SSD are way cooler than regular HDDs so the system itself runs cooler making a difference in its potential lifespan.

    Fortunately I swapped straight from the 12GB flash memory to a 512GB SSD so the PS3 could transfer the data itself. Means I don't know how HDDs do but the SSD clearly helps in the two Gran Turismo games and deleting and installing data is much faster than it was on flash memory. Also more space, that was my main reason especially as I had that PS3 since late 2013 as a kid and wanted an upgrade.

    • @SamDansCouch
      @SamDansCouch  7 місяців тому +1

      Hi Hayden! That's awesome. Do you remember what SSD brand you got? Nowadays it's more affordable than ever to do this. When the SSDs first came out it didn't make sense to invest so much money. But thanks to prices being decent now, the upgrade to SSD is worth it. I've rediscovered GT5 and GT6 lately and I am so glad the track loads are much shorter now compared to HDD times.

    It's especially with a CFW overclock that you see the biggest difference, especially with FTP transfer speeds when you transfer a game from your PC to the PS3 SSD remotely.

      By how much did the speed increase? Currently it is about 2-3 Mb/s for me

    • @Sickonaut

      @@timtzs It's much better than that, transferring games from the PC to the PS3 using the FTP method. Right now, I'm transferring Metal Gear Solid Collection at a speed of 10.8 MB/s. With the FTP method, you can use the full potential of the PS3's network card, which is /100.

    I put an SSD into my PS3 for my Dark Souls 2 game. That was in 2014! A Crucial 128gb.. It reduced loading times so much..
    The SSD did cost 66 Euros in 2014. It was still some kind of luxury, however I used that PS3 with that SSD since last year until I sold it.

    Regarding the process of moving data from one disk to another you could always hook the original PS3 drive along with the new one on a single PC and clone it. I remember there being a tool dedicated to PS3 HDD's cloning.

    • @SamDansCouch
      @SamDansCouch  5 місяців тому

      Hi unlimitedslash! 👋 Thank you for your feedback. That is a way to do it as well though as far as I know you won't be able to increase the drive size this way. But if you want a 1:1 clone then this can be an option as well 🙂

    • @LarsV62
      @LarsV62 3 місяці тому +1

      No need to use third party tools to clone your old PS3 to a new one, once you have the SSD ready. The native way is to connect the two consoles using a normal network cable. Then go to the transfer option, not backup.
      Be sure to carefully read the information screens before doing any backup as shown in the video, or when you transfer from old to new console for details on what types of data that will not be copied. Also, check Sony's website page on this subject for more details. Some parts of a very few specific games will not be copied over, even with straight transfer.
      The benefit of doing a straight transfer instead of a backup and restore is that a backup omits some things that are included in a old- to-new direct transfer.
      Unrelated to this video, but might be useful to know:
      Copy protected save files can't be backed up to USB if your use that option. Using PS+ cloud if you have a subscription will include everything. I've seen games on my PS3 that would let you copy each actual save to USB, but not the game settings and your player profile. Another game would do the opposite.

      @unlimitedslash 3 місяці тому +1

    Thank for the video! The trivia fact that the PS3 only reads the first partition (which I think should be pronounced "partision", btw) is a very good one, one that could trip up many people trying to do this. I imagine that formatting directly with MBR scheme and FAT32 fs should skip the whole partitioning dance, right?
    The gains seem to be generally minor, I personally wouldn't go through the hassle unless I wanted to expand the storage anyway. Also, another side benefit: no mechanical seek noises from the HDD!

      Hello David! Yes I was really thrown off at first by the whole EFI partition confusing the PS3. Many external drives even come with this pre-formatted so getting rid of it can only be done with the "clean" command to literally clean off all partitions and starts over. Doing the MBR afterwards leaves you with a clean single partition. The speed gains are depending on each game. Ive been playing a lot of GT5, GT6 and GTAIV and the more you load the more you appreciate the seconds you save. It does add up after a while. And yes no noises, which is great and also less heat and power consumption. It is all not a huge difference but a nice upgrade if you are up for it 🙂

      Hello 👋 Yes 1TB is the max size. Anything higher you are going to run into problems of the PS3 not being able to rebuild its database and lose files. So 1TB is where everything still runs smoothly. Else I would have put in more as well. I’m a game hoarder 😄

    You may want to update this video as Microsoft recently announced that they’re removing the decades-old FAT32 limit and increasing compatibility to I believe beyond 1TB.
    Still 32-bit but now Windows 11 will be able to format drives like these to FAT32 with ease.
    By decades old, some of you weren’t even born to know how old. Like Windows 98 old.

    Hey. So I did exactly what you did for the most part. HOWEVER, you didn't address this additional issue: "The file was created by another user and can not be loaded." Even after pulling my files and user accounts from my external hard drive, I always get this message. Note: I do not have online access! It was always offline!
    How were you able to access your saved files and actually use them without having any other issues? What else did you do?
    I did not back up my trophies before doing the backup, but I do have a PSN account. So maybe that is why. Still, an answer from you would help a lot. Thanks😊
    Update: You have to ACTIVATE THE PS3 SYSTEM! THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT! WHATEVER I TYPED ABOVE, I SOLVED IT! MAKE SURE YOU HAVE A PSN ACCOUNT! IT'S FREE! MAKE SURE YOU KNOW HOW TO LOG INTO YOUR PSN ACCOUNT! THEN AFTERWARDS, YOU ACTIVATE YOUR SYSTEM AND SYNC YOUR TROPHIES!
    I did all that, and it fixed the issue!!!

    I installed an SSD on my PS3 and later found out that certain games were not running correctly. Games in that generation were not designed with an ssd in mind so you might run into issues. Ssd just isn't worth installing in a ps3. Newer Hdds these days are more than capable.

    Look up the pros and cons to switching to SSD!! SSD has a short lifespan and can only take so much deleting and rewriting!! I was going to go with SSD, now I changed my mind. Anything newer is not built to last!! Do your research!!

    • @SamDansCouch
      @SamDansCouch  Місяць тому

      Hello 👋Don't give fear reports about SSDs dying too much weight. You would need to spend thousands and thousands of hours playing, copying and deleting files on your PS3 until the SSD would slow down. I have not heard about a single person having achieved an SSD dying in their PS3. So no worries, SSDs are cheap and give you so many advantages. It is worth it in my opinion. And a mechanical discs is always at risk at dying at any point in time too. That's just physics. So no worries and enjoy gaming! 🙂
