In the late 90's, my goth roomie dragged me to a goth nightclub in Ybor City, Florida, and the DJ played this song at closing time to get everyone to leave. It worked!
I once saw a band at the Brighton Fringe play this. It was an all male band and they had acoustic instruments guitar, double base and some percussion. They had slowed it right down and were doing it in a kind Django Rhinhart style. It was great!
Jesus christ this would be the best thing ever. Dan with that "You're my doll, rock'n'roll, feel the glamour in pink Kiss me here, touch me there, hanky panky" would be a fucking panty dropper!
Still a great song. Is it dated? Kind of but we are still hearing that iconic DX7 bass sound, 909 drums and most other synth sounds on that track. The strings date it a little but it’s not as egregious as a lot of other 90’s electronic pop. No one took this group seriously after Barbie Girl, very unfortunate.
Back in the day I had a little 1.2 Corsa. Someone stole my twist off antenna one day and all I had for music in my car for 2 years was Aqua on cassette :)
Omfg!!! 08:04 proves that Justin’s plan all along was to spend months and months creating tons of great content, committing endless hours to his fan base, only to unleash the longest-gestating Rickroll in history once he reached a quarter of a million subs. Bravo, Justin. Bravo.
I was so caught off guard by the Rickroll that I almost missed his announcement of a possible Günther analysis video to come in near future. Literally shaking w/ excitement and anticipation at the prospect.
@@helanthros I was imagining the song on Black Shuck melody: RickRoll (RickRoll) RickRoll (RickRoll) RickRoll (RickRoll) I'll make you pay a toll... 😅😅😅🤪
Another great eurodance band that was overlooked was Army of Lovers. Even Kurt Cobain was a fan. Crucified was particularly fantastic! Very camp and great songwriting.
Aqua was the intermission show during one of the Euro Song contests. I have to say I was surprised how hard they rocked out. They definitely more in them than simple euro fluff.
" Barbie Girl" was hilarious!!! It was on continual play in our house when I had to babysit my niece.and her friends!! It was their party song to dance and throw thier dolls around to!!😂😂 " come on Barbie lets go party"...laughs...we were having too much fun to even think about double entendres!!!
I remember I really enjoyed the tongue in cheek lyrics. However, after I heard it was also popular with young kids, I guess most listeners didn't get the sexual innuendos but got hooked by the video and the catchy tune.
Frankly their songs are fantastic. Barbie Girl was indeed a bit of a cross to bear but their Aquarium album is damned near perfect. I was due to steward at a festival they were headlining until bloody COVID hit. Shame. Cruelly underrated to my mind. Plu,s Lene was one of the best snipers in the Norwegian military, iirc.
In my opinion, the best band from Denmark, is MEW - great live performers, too. I can remember hearing, 'AM I WRY? NO', for the first time (back in 2003), and was immediately impressed - it's wonderfully off-kilter, with a couple of striking 'left turns'. Sadly, the band are not greatly known in the UK...
Just like Vengaboys, I STILL love this entire album! And when the local goth nightclub played this alongside Rammstein's DuHast EVERYONE got up & danced because it's brilliant & ridiculous fun💃✨️😊🖤
What a pleasant surprise you popped up! A fun get up, Justin. I saw a fan wearing that hair viewing the Darkness conert video @ Kneb Worth. He looked puzzled.
I love Barbie Girl. Being able to transcend genre and still be good is a sign of a great song. As such, you should check out the Melodicka Bros "Way too sad" cover of Barbie Girl here on UA-cam.
Charles Berthoud (really Victor Wooten) proved the brilliance of the melodies in this song. Hits become hits for some indelible reason. It's cool to see the inexplicable come into focus in real-time.
Great Danish acts: Gasolin', Kim Larsen, Nephew, Kashmir, Carpark North, Dizzy Miss Lizzy, Tim Christensen, The Benefits, Volbeat, Lis Sørensen, Hanne Boel, Søs Fenger,, Sanne Salomonsen, Anne Dorte Michelsen. Just off the top of my noggin. Part of being half Danish and growing up in close vicinity to Denmark it would be damn near impossible to miss out on awesome Danish music, whether it's sung in Danish or English. Denmark has nothing to be ashamed of, not even Barbie Girl.
I remember when ‘Barbie girl’ came out, and unfortunately not long after I had to go away to do a bit of work for her Majesty, so to speak. While I was there, they released the single ‘turn back Time’. I couldn’t believe it was the same band when I found out as I didn’t have access to a television.
I'm Danish and I can say that we probably had the worst of the Barbie Girl disease in the end of the '90s. It was everywhere. You couldn't go for one day without hearing it at least a couple a times. It was awful! I won't say I'm ashamed of Aqua. But I am disappointed that this is apparently the best we can do.
I don’t know if a song can have a more infectious hook. Almost like a virus the way it winds into your brain. I have a copy of this album and I am a child of rock..
Ken out here breaking 4th walls with his knowing winks at the audience.. Awh man the 90s really were bonkers. Seemed more innocent? (even though it patently wasn't! 🤷♂️) like the old saying goes "youth is wasted on the young".. The naivete and innocence of youth and the chances you'd take could lead to great things, as we get older we obviously think a bit more what with responsibilities and stuff. Damn.. This comment went bonkers! 😂 All the best Justin and crew. "life in plastic, its fantastic" a Kardashian somewhere was listening whilst getting piped on video. 🙏👏
My daughters’ (4.5 and 8.5 years) favorite song for some time now. Neither aware of the blazingly obvious innuendo and “endo” of the lyrics, it’s requested to be played a couple of times a week…so I know this song quite well 😬 Justin Hawkins, one element you’ve omitted from your otherwise, excellent review of Aqua’s finest oeuvre, is the subtle but yet magically entertaining arrangement of electronic marimbas (?) playing a sort of counter melody during the “oh oh, oh oh” chorus section. Sorry for getting so technical there 😂. Surely a modern masterpiece of pop production which, despite its commercial success is rarely recognized for its musicality 😁
A fun fact about the music video for Barbie Girl: The actors, who played Barbie and Ken's friends was both poor students and the two did not knew each other prior to the filming. It was love at first sight on the set of the music video and today they are married and has children together.
Who doesn't love this song?! Watching this video as a kid, I wanted to be just like the female singer! She was a beautiful, cool-ass Barbie with a tattoo and a sense of humor! I think some of the sexual innuendos were apparent to me back then, but just made it that much cooler, since it was "naughty." So fun, so colorful, and so catchy.
I used to play piano in posh restaurants and I used to enjoy slyly playing barbie girl interwound with some jazz chords and watch peoples ears prick up when they recognised it but couldn’t place it!!!
As others have mentioned, Denmark has had heaps of great bands - I've not seen D*A*D mentioned yet though. Enduring goodness. "He's got a one track mind and a two stringed bass" Gold.

Absolutely hilarious; both the song and the commentary. I've always been amused by "undress me everywhere" -- an instruction to which my daughters took with much vigour. Costumes all over the place and you could never get them back on again. That and shaving their heads. (The Barbies', that is, not my daughters'.)
Aquarium by Aqua was my first album as a child, I thought of it quite innocently back then. But I think adults like me are the ones who the Danish government can blame for this 😂
Love ya, Justin! I think it would be interesting if you took a look at Garth Brooks. I know he's probably not necessarily your cuppa, but he's HUGE. I'd like to see your take on him. Cheers!
Justin, thanks very much for introducing Gunther! I didn't know this bloke until now, and I had a good laugh after watching his "sexy"(creepy?) videos.

I think you were talking about the 80's children party classic: the hedgehog of snacks. A baked potato covered in tinfoil and skewered with pickled onion, cheese etc. My favourite being a cube of cheddar and pineapple.
This one brought up some memories. 1997. Hanging out with Jonny Radtke before he was in Kill Hannah or Filter. High school days. This song was the theme song of his girlfriend, who was kind of ditzy. Hanging out them and his girlfriends hot friends. They all went to the rich kid school and going with them to the rich kid house parties was a trip. No one in that world was ever very openly friendly. We would a lot of weird looks, but the houses and apartments we would end up in were pretty amazing at times.

Justin! It would be very cool if you could take a look at Be Quiet and Drive by Deftones or any of their other tracks. They’ve done a lot of very interesting genre changes within the “metal sphere” and they sound rather epic
Your ability to remember other songs that use the same chord sequences is fantastic.

I've no shame in admitting that Turn Back Time is a great song.
I came here for this comment!!
Sliding Doors! 🔥
This, and the chorus melody of Happy boys and girls is so beautiful.
A truly underrated song that gets overshadowed by the damn Barbie Girl song.
A brilliant chorus, but is that sax riff in the verse a speeded up sample from Ace Of Base' All That She Wants?
In the late 90's, my goth roomie dragged me to a goth nightclub in Ybor City, Florida, and the DJ played this song at closing time to get everyone to leave. It worked!

There's a reason everyone remembers it! I'm a 50 year-old metal guy and I love it!
I put it on for nostalgia reasons a few years back and I realised it was actually amazing. Something about the verse bit just hits right.
