- Hi everyone!
In this video, I build a DIY car shower for my roof rack. I go into detail about which parts I used, how I made and mounted the shower, and test the system to see if it actually works!
This was our first DIY video, and I will be changing how I film these in the future. I aim to include more details and steps in future videos. For now, please enjoy the video and let me know if you build one!
If you plan on using the water for drinking? I'd recommend PVC vs ABS. ABS is NOT BPA free.
Thanks for the idea! I always say, don't reinvent the wheel, just copy success. Your idea is the simplest yet that I've seen. Off to Lowe's!
Thanks for the video! That is the simplest and most functional design I've seen, super helpful!
Great video thanks for taking the time to do it. We live at Carolina Beach this will work great for rinsing off the sand on the little one. Stay Safe.
Thanks Chris! Have fun at the beach!
Great video simple and to the point, thanks for the video.
Thanks for watching!
Hey man that's pretty freaking cool.
Hey thanks Joe!
Thank you for the videos. I made the same one. Cost total $100. (Amazon blow out plug) and home depot for PBC piping (harbor freight step drill bit) Used 4" 10 foot PBC pipe. Thank you 😉
Awesome! Glad to hear it came together for you.
PVC braddah, PVC
Nice vid mate! I'll build one soon.
I do have a question.
Have you run the hose on a shower setting (rather than mist) for a comfortable shower? If so, how long did your set up last?
Looks nice, keep in mind abs is not pressure rated, pvc is.
Nice. A few questions for anybody who has one of these in PVC:
When it runs out of pressure there is still a lot of water in the tank?
What happens if you run it with a lot more water coming trough the head?
On a sunny 70F+ day, Is the water a comfortable temperature 2 hours after the sun goes down?
Anybody try to install a 120v 1000w heating element on one of these for a 10 minute warm up?
Great video! Thanks for the tips! How much water did you fill in the tank? Do you have to pressurize again or does all the water come out from pressurizing the first time
Thanks a bunch! The tank holds just over 2 gallons. One pressurization worked for me, but I did leave the compressor connected in case I had to repressurize
Does the black pipe keep it warm when waters left in the sun?
Hey guys, amazing video. Quick question, are you injecting air through the Schrader valve to generate pressure on the water? If so, what pressure are you injecting? Thanks!
Yes, pressure through the shrader valve. Go up to 30psi, but don't leave pressure in the system. Pressurize as needed
How did you pressurize this?
Thanks for an informative video. I just finished my solar shower mostly based on your design except that I installed a 4-in to 2-in Y at the discharge end. Then I cemented a PVC adapter (using PVC to ABS cement), which has a 3/4 inch threaded end that I simply screwed the spigot right to it. I don’t like to drill and this way I only had to drill a small hole for the air intake valve. I tilted the discharge tube a bit so all water will flow towards it. I had a perfect seal if I use Teflon tape on both end caps. It seems a hassle to have to re-tape the cap each time you need to add water. Do you have a better solution?
Glad to hear you made your own! I like the idea you mentioned here as well. I think the only other solution I have, besides tape, would be a rubber O ring that fits onto the screw cap. That may be a better option, let me know if you try it!
Thanks for the reply. I also thought of using an o-ring, but I don’t think they make one for the clean out plug, which was what I’ve used. Thanks again and really enjoyed your video.
Install another faucet next to the air valve then make a small adapter hose with 2 female threaded ends to attach fill hose to the shower hose line. Open both faucets and fill tank until water overflows on top faucet. Then you can turn off fill line, close top faucet, drain some water through the shower line and then close bottom faucet, reattach shower head and your ready to pressurize.
Like the roof shower! Looking forward to make one for my RAV4. How many psi did it take?
Thanks a bunch! We've brought it up to 40psi, and it holds just fine. I'd assume it could go higher, but 30-40 works just fine for us.
Dude what did you use to attach it to your car?
You had me at 4Runner. Make more videos.
How much should you fill the tank?
Simplest is a solar shower about $10 and stored away until you need it
How is this set up holding up for you? I’m mostly worried about the cleanout leaking or handling high pressure. Thanks!
Hey Alec! So far, I haven't had any issues. The clean out valve hasn't worn out, and it's been in the sun all summer. Definitely working well still, although build quality probably adds a lot to that factor.
Shaffer valve is how you pressuring the tank?
Hello Beautiful project, can you tell me where did you buy the tubes?
I just bought them at the hardware store 👍
I would be careful going over 20psi with it. I don't think the screw cap is rated for pressure. Usually just used for drainage. It could blow off like I've seen in a different video as the sun deteriorates it.
That's great to know, thanks Todd!
Why doesn't anyone use square pipe? Wouldn't the fittings mount easier (flush) and mounting it to a frame safer?
Hi, whats the name of the pressure valve used to pump the air in thanks?
Schraeder Valve!
Can you take some close up pics of the mounting hardware used?
I just used two cam straps and strapped it to my roof rack. Thanks!
How’s the flow on a setting other than misting?
It holds up well! Obviously, higher drain settings deplete the water quicker, but the flow amount is great.
Does the water get pretty warm after bring out in the sun for a while? My wife has been threatening to kick me out of the house so I'm thinking about setting the vehicle up for camping.
Yeah it warms up well! Definitely not scorching but it's a pleasant temperature to rinse off. If you get evicted, this will work well for you (at least in the warmer months)
Does the top cap leak out air after pressuring?
I used some thread tape to secure the top cap, but it wears down and can leak. Not a huge issue, especially with such a small capacity. But something to note!
It’s not a bad idea. I think if you used one more street elbow you could just cut that pipe in half and turn it back on itself to double the capacity. Someone mentioned about a heating element too that’s not a bad idea either. 👍
Yeah you can mod this with a couple more turns easily, I made mine small because I don't need too much water onboard but it's a modular design to suit anyone's needs.
Would’ve been good if you showed us how you pressurized it
How much pressure did you put?
25 PSI
How do you pressurize it?
We pressurize the tank with an air compressor that plugs into the 12v port in the back of the 4runner.
@@thedirtpeople6754 Thanks.
How much pressure did you add
I usually add up to 30PSI
@@thedirtpeople6754 ok great! Thanks!
Would’ve been good if he showed us how to pressurize it
Use your air compressor...that's the purpose of the schrader valve. I'd go one step further and include a pressure relief valve set to about 30 psi so you don't over-pressurize the pipe.
Nice build all the ones I see are to long
Thanks! Yeah, a lot of the diy showers are long and cumbersome.
Thanks for showing me your massive pipe, really liked how much hot liquid came out.
I clicked this because I was like why would you want to give your car a shower.
This will absolutely be our next video.
Just doesn’t look like enough water to take a shower
You speed up the process. Reduce video in normal mode on building instructions. Please.
8 minutes of mist
You spend a ton of money on rod holders but don't think about buying a real Road Shower. I am not going to knock your shower though. It speaks for itself.
