    The tough thing about Spectrum though is even if you have a cable tv plan, you still can’t get all the channels within the Spectrum APP unless you have Spectrum WiFi. Without it, some channels you’ll still have access to live streaming, but forced to sign into the network app separately (CBS APP, TBS APP, etc) with your spectrum login. Not a big deal for me, but for people like my folks who aren’t tech savvy with changing from one app to another just to watch one channel, it’s an annoying inconvenience. Likely licensing agreements prevent some channels from being listed in the Spectrum APP lineup, but kind of feels cheep at the same time they couldn’t get terms to have it all in there, especially since you already pay high broadcast fees to the tune of $21 in CA and can’t even get CBS in the Spectrum APP without you having a spectrum wifi plan. Kinda a joke

    We dumped the cable boxes and bought a ROKU. Started streaming. Still had the Spectrum modem and tv service. Then dumped the modem and went with a Netgear Nighthawk. No problem with the Spectrum app. Couple days later we got TDS fiber. Cloud storage. Three months free on the internet service ($42 a month after the three months pass) . I see posts that the Spectrum app wasn't available. It worked up to the day we turned in the modem and we were running TDS with no problem.

    The problem with the Roku is that there are no numbers on the remote. You are stuck scrolling through 1000 channels just to change channels. It's a real pain.

    What's this obsession with getting rid of the box? We just switched to the Roku with Spectrum and it's a huge step down in functionality. The primitive little Roku remote looks like something from the 1980s. Many things we could do before is no longer possible (eg go directly to the guide or your recordings). Every time we execute a command, it buffers for several seconds as it communicates with the modem. And we can no longer see the image when we fast forward. You have to blindly guess where you are, and repeatedly stop and start to find the end of the commercial. I could go on and on. Beware of people singing the praises of Roku. It's not as nice as people make out.

    I like my ROKU but cannot live without the Spectrum DVR. I use it daily and generally record my favorite series'. In northern Michigan I pay $221 monthly for the Spectrum Silver pkg. (incl. HBO, Cinemax, Motortrend, AXS) and high speed internet along with one DVR box, a basic digital box and modem. INSANE! THEY GOT ME BY THE BALLS! I have been down every alternative services available and STILL "it is what it is" if you want decent, reliable home entertainment service. Spectrum by far has been the best there is on all levels when comparing service, reliability and cost once those sign up plans expire.

    I have an old Time Warner basic plan that spectrum still recognizes, for $22/month. Very limited channels. I have 2 tv’s and 2 cable boxes. I turned them both boxes in thinking I was going to eliminate my $10/box rental fee. They took both boxes and removed $20 worth of rental fees. They then charged me $32 for the $22 basic plan. Only saving me $10/month. Ever heard of this?

    I don’t get the emphasis on Roku. Not only does this work in other devices like Apple TV, but even easier, on smart TVs. I pay $44.99 a month for internet through Spectrum. This allows me to use the Spectrum TV App without having to pay additionally for cable. I have the app on both my Samsung smart tv and on the Apple TV. In addition, I have given relatives my login information and they are able to watch Spectrum TV in their home. You definitely do not have to have Roku specifically.

    "So easy a caveman can do it." Jokes aside, my pops uses this on the Kitchen TV and it really does "just work." The only issue is the lack of DVR.
    The HDHomerun Prime has 3 tuners (new models have more!) and only I pay for a cable card. It works great for live TV on PS3 or PC's w/ Windows Media Center. HDHR also has a live TV app that works on multiple platforms.
    Most interestingly is how crisp the quality of a live stream from the HDHR is. It is certainly crisper than the video seen on a Spectrum DVR box. Even watching live TV on a DVR box is like watching recorded TV since it's constantly re-encoded and buffered on to the HDD so that it can be paused. It's hardly noticeable but when looking at the live signal from the HDHR, I feel that I can swear that the quality is better.
    One Problem: Spectrum has DRM on the TV channel line-up, so I can't take advantage of any of the cooler options like MythTV. If I record something in WMC, I can play it back only on that computer. If I want to transfer the footage, I have to use a screen recorder or output the HDMI to an HDMI capture card's input.
    I'm gonna stop before I go on a doubly-lengthy rant.
    Good video, for people in social distancing lockdown this content can make a difference. Some people can't afford multiple cable boxes, especially with the unemployment situation.

    • @hakemon
      @hakemon  4 роки тому +1

      How are the cable cards? When I worked for Bright House Networks, on the back end, they were horrible to set up, and I question if it was intention on their part because even their boxes have cable cards.

    • @DJRonnieG
      @DJRonnieG 4 роки тому

      @@hakemon Ahh yeah, when I was working in the Spectrum call center I also had mixed experiences. However, my own experience was good.
      Short answer: It was very easy. The more challenging aspect is when WMC takes a dump on me. This usually only happens if I don't use it for a couple of months. It doesn't "just stop working" if I'm using it frequently.
      Detailed answer:
      I picked up the cable card at my local Spectrum payment center along with a Switched-Digital Video tuning adapter. The SDV adapter box was included with the cable card subscription.
      From there I merely plugged the cable line into a splitter. One cable went into the SDV tuning adapter and the other cable went into the HDHR unit. The HDHR Prime has a cable card slot, a coax port, a USB port and an Ethernet port.
      In my case, the SDV tuning adapter is connected to the HDHR via USB cable. It must be switched on (although it does turn itself on after power outages). It has a brief start-up sequence where the power LED blinks slowly for up to a minute.
      Basically, folks with a technical background should do well with these. On the other hand, let's say some guy is tech savvy and he sets up some boxes with cable cards and the requisite SDV adapter. Then, one day the guy is out of town and his wife runs into trouble.
      They didn't set it up and they're usually not the one who troubleshoots this thing. Depending on the patience of the customer, their aptitude and how demanding they are... the mileage of a call center rep may vary.
      For your own purposes it's an excellent option. For an older relative that lives 50 miles away, the added cost of DVR service from the cable company would probably result in less headaches.
