I'm a 68 yr old disabled woman living below the poverty line in HUD housing, which qualifies me to get Xfinity for $11 a month. I have Amazon Prime ($16) and Netflix ($10), and Kindle ($10.) I watch free UA-cam. I don't own a TV; I use laptop computers. I'm retired and have a lot of free time. For $47, I am well entertained. AND, I am totally commercial free.

I used to have Dish. The best thing about leaving Dish is that I took off the actual dish, and then mounted a $40 antenna on the J pole, and used the existing cables that they ran to my TV's to get all my local channels. In addition, I use a streaming service for the rest of the non local channels.

The best combination for me right now is antenna, Netflix and Hulu. I used to have cable like 4 or 5 years ago then I got tired of paying almost $200 for cable plus Comcast always had problems with their service the cable would just go out all of a sudden and it wouldn’t be storming or anything. I always tell my family and friends that letting go of cable was the best decision I’ve made in my life cause I am saving myself so much money and it feels good to not have to pay a high ass cable bill.

My cable bill was 220 a month. I am glad to pay $110.00 and save $110. 00. And like he said I just don’t buy a streaming card if I don’t want to. I don’t let them auto draft from my account. my son cut the cable at his house. He asked me to babysit his house while he was having a roof put on one day. So I did it..
The only thing he had on the television was Netflix.. I was looking forward to sampling Netflix, because I have been hearing that any movie I can think of is available on Netflix included in the package..
so I got them to show me how the remote worked and I turned on the television and I started searching..
I searched out about 15 movies that I would like to have watched again. Not a single one of them was available on Netflix..
so I started searching through the movies that were available..
mostly new movies that were a year to five yrs old…
so I gave a few of them a chance,
it was worse than trying to sit through the Ice Capades. I did not make it 10 minutes through any of the newer movies. Flying dinosaurs, little kids saving the world, completely unbelievable and unrealistic scenarios..
I soon realized why all those new movies are available on Netflix so soon, it’s because they completely bombed at the box office..

People can save even more if they drop live TV. You could get on demand TV services for between $35 and $50 a month. If you don’t watch much live TV, it can be a good option or you can just cut out the expensive sports packages and still watch live TV. The whole point of cutting cable is to save money and if you’re spending more on streaming TV than you did on cable, switching isn’t worth it. Watch your viewing and your spending habits.

The biggest plus for me ditching Direct tv was the capability to decide for myself what channels/services I use. The tv delivery services business model of collecting money to add channels to their packages has never matched my needs. At least with streaming you have options and can manage your expense. The TV service model is dying because people no longer want to pay for 15 shopping channels or music channels or ..... at least I am in control and to me that is the biggest advantage to streaming

We just bought a house and I’m cutting wherever I can. We just got fios internet for 85 per month (1gb up and down) and Hulu (55 for 3 mos then 65). I have had UA-cam premium for a long time so I’m keeping that at 17 a month.
With fios, The router and extender are included free. In fact it was more expensive to go down to the next plan of 400 mbps because router was not included.
I tried UA-cam tv, but with a surround sound setup, the sound was not good- didn’t even support 5.1. Hulu sounds much better and has a very clear picture.
We got all of the channels we were looking for except one. And the only premium channel we might pay for during a specific show is hbo for 15 and since my sisters’ families want to watch it as well, we will split that cost.
We will see how it works out long term! Fios tv is just too expensive to get the channels you want. Xfinity pricing is better but it goes up and it’s under contract. It also only has fast download speeds. Crossing my fingers!

They are joining the more that 10,000 homes per day that are dropping cable TV. With all the homes dropping cable TV the cable TV companies will have no choice but to continue raising rates to support the huge infrastructure for the remaining customers. All those services have gone way up now. Some doubled. I have used Philo at about $20 a month just to compliment my local network channels that I get with an antenna. If people are not going to start using an antenna for local channels after they drop cable...then they should just keep cable....in my opinion.

So their price with cable would actually be your $100 PLUS the price of the above services you listed. When I dropped Comcast and kept internet I picked up Philo plus an antenna for locals. My net savings per month was $95. During football and basketball season I picked up Sling Orange with the sports pack and lifestyle pack (Hallmark for the wife). My savings at that point was still $70/month. At the end of March when basketball season is over I will drop Sling and go back to Philo until Labor Day when football returns. I did it, dropped cable TV, got a TV antenna to watch local TV stations for important weather and other news and shows. Picture quality is much better then cable which is less than 2K, your cable screen is filled with station notification and channel numbers, makes the screen viewing area slightly smaller than Antenna. I’m saving $81 a month; TV antenna cost me $75, it payed for its self in the second month. So far I have PLEX, Crackle -owned by Disney-, TUBI, and yes PLUTO, even it’s pr-recorded shows still have fun watching a marathon of Mission Impossible TV show originally shot on 35mm film with absolutely rich colors.

Out of the monthly fees, I pay $43 above the cost of the channels package: $12 for local channels, $15 rental for the Hopper receiver, $7 ea. x 2 for the Joey receivers that are required on any other tv you want service too. Then theres $2 in taxes. This $43.00 per month additional fees are the same regardless of the size package I choose. I'm switching to streaming and the $43 goes away.

A person never makes a mistake cutting the cable. As long as the studios and various handlers of programming are who they are, Streaming sucks. This belief that one must have a provider service is not true. They all suck.

Don’t forget that if you use your cable provider for internet only, the price goes up.
Eg. I paid $50/mo for internet plus $75/mo for tv with Spectrum. When I dropped the tv package, my cost for internet went from $50/mo to $80/mo. A lot of folks don’t account for this.

    • @MichaelSaves
      @MichaelSaves  3 роки тому +1

That's not true with all internet providers, but definitely something to consider. A poll of my audience found more than 50% pay between $50 to $75 for an internet-only plan. Hopefully this will stabilize with T-Mobile and Verizon Home Internet ramping up as competition.

Bullshit. I call the cable company and negotiate the Internet service down to what they are offering new customers. I've been with them for a long time, and they always renew my contract at a much lower price.

I understand but most subscribers were paying more than 100.00 and the cost for cable or satellite was increasing. Currently I have UA-cam TV and few other streaming services but like you said those services were purchased temporarily and I canceled some of my streaming services. The good news is you can subscribe for a short period and cancel the streaming services anytime unlike cable or satellite 📡 services. So that 100.00 plus was spent just for few months compared to having cable or satellite for a long period of time.

This is good, but the other side of the coin I never see is people always add the extra streaming services into a cord cutters budget. Are you saying no one who has cable doesn't subscribe to Netflix, Hulu, Disney +, HBO Max etc? I'm sure many do, and those costs would have to be added to the cable tv'ers total monthly budget (including those crazy cable fees).

Confused, as usual. Hooked into Hulu for Dopesick, then thought to cancel until I saw overlapping programs. On HBOmax, noticed Turner Classic Movies, once easy to record back with DirectTV. Why is this so difficult for Smart TVs (well, sneaky smart) that recording a show is such a tangle of tech? Lack of guides to pick recordings a week ahead is ludicrous. Sometimes I want my cord back. But there's no going back. We have a window over-the-air with weak signal, HBOmax, Disney and Prime shared with our grown son. We're on out own using Roku. We pay for Netflix and Hulu for blockbusters like DopeSick. We like plain ol' UA-cam for old movies. It overwhelming and I rue the day I got sucked into this mess. I WATCH LESS TV THAN BEFORE because of the difficulty. It didn't have to be this way.

If you're close to a population center you'd be amazed what you can pick up over an antenna connected to a digital TV. Add Netflix, Amazon Prime, and maybe Disney+ and you're way ahead. If you follow a sports team outside your local area this might not work for your particular case (other than watching games at a friend's house or sports bars).

First off, I bought an Antenna to see what was over the Air for free. I get no less than 35 free stations, more if you turn my antenna.
Then I bought a Roku device. This was enough to convince my wife.
So we dropped cable, turned in 5 box for the 5 tvs, stopped the dvr service saving $125 a month.
So With my vast dvd library and VHS Library,
I get enough free stuff to ever think about paying for a service.
Now, Like most women, my wife has an Amazon Prime account meaning she gets Amazon Prime!!
So right now @ 7:26 pm, she is watching Jeopardy and I 'm watching Doctor Who: Frontier in Space on Pluto/Roku.

@@someotherdude You have to keep Wifi, so I still have an internet and house phone bill.
So you need internet/wifi to watch Antenna man videos,
So wifi feed whichever stick you want.
I choose Roku because of the free stuff which is much better than if you just have cable
And you can still use Roku before you make the leap from cable.
Also, I'm able to hook my antenna to the cable harness to feed the local stations to each tv.
But I bought a different Roku for each tv, so if you have kids, they can customize their channels or if your spouse wants to watch a different show, or if you go to bed and continue watching your show.
I have 4 wide screens and one smart tv in the main room. No fighting over the remote or you can choose which games you want to watch,
