Never heard of an RV inspection, but then I’ve never bought an RV. Planning on a truck camper within the next year, so was wondering how you go about getting it inspected? Are there “RV Inspection” companies out there? Really good info, thanks for calling bullsh*t on some of these money grabbing “services” that dealers encourage. ✌🏼

Any recommendations for 3rd party extended RV(Motor home) warranties?
I know that there are a lot of them out there for regular cars like "Car Shield" that will quickly take your money but will deny every repair and never pay for anything.
How & where do you get a 3rd party RV inspection done?
I'm looking to buy my 1st RV.
      Thank you for your help.

Try to rent the model you are interested in buying. My wife and I thought the 16 foot Airstream Basecamp would be perfect for us. We decided to rent one and take it to a local State Park and spend a weekend living in it. We quickly realized it was too small for the two of us. Our thinking was on a rainy day we would be walking all over each other. This lead us to buying a 25 foot version and we have been very happy with our decision. It isn't too small or too big for use.

What I always say is, "I am only inquiring about the price for the ____. I don't discuss financing or trading in until we settle on the price." I have walked out of a dealerships who persistently kept asking. I had one sales manager say to me, "well, that's how we do business." I replied, " it's not how I do business and I'm not doing it that way." I have allegedly paid more, but not when you figure in financing.

I recently walked out of a Toyota dealer because they insisted on negotiating payments instead of the out the door price. HUGE red flag that they want to hide unnecessary fees and pad the price!

Learn to walk away. Years ago I had a salesman say “ you going to walk away from this deal for $250.00”. Yes, then. A week later I noticed they had the same exact vehicle listed for the price I said I would pay, I saved $2000.00 by walking away.

I made the mistake of buying a new Thor Outlaw 37’ Class A Toy Hauler. That thing was a lemon, constantly in the shop, the roof leaked, even after sealing every possible place it could be, the door hinges rusted, every hinge inside popped out of the cabinets, elevator bed got stuck, and when I pulled the bedroom drawers out there was saw dust all over the electronics. Trim pieces kept falling off. If I had to do it all over again, I’d get the 3rd party inspection and skip Thor Class A products.

Excellent advice which I will follow to the latter. I wouldn’t buy any motorhome without having an independent inspection. If I found the perfect rig for the perfect price it would be subject to an independent inspection. Any issues that were unknown or hidden would either have to be repaired to the inspector’s complete satisfaction and at the dealerships costs or I would walk away no matter what. Great advice which will save people potentially $ thousands $$$👌✌️💫

I’ve watched hundreds of hours of RV videos on UA-cam in preparation to buy my first one. Several talked about, as you did, third-party inspection. None got in any details on HOW. So how does a novice like me even know where/how to find an inspector and the mechanics of getting the inspector to go to a private seller from whom I want to buy the RV. Would really appreciate a video on step-by-step instructions on how to go about finding an inspector to do the job. Thanks.

If you purchase an rv on. F53 chassis plan on spending an additional 3-5 thousand dollars to get a decent (not great) but decent upgraded steering suspension. E-trailer had all the parts for our 2019 Winnebago intent that had been field testing and were a breeze to install. As you stated it’s hard to find rv shops to do repairs, just try to find one to install upgrades to your suspension. All the suspension upgrades we have done have been able to be installed by me. E-trailer has videos on how to install and an experienced team to answer questions when or if they should come up. No I do not work for E-trailer but there customer service is over the moon. Really enjoy your channel.

I picked up my brand new camper once and the compressor line on the fridge was frozen solid during the walk through. The manufacturer claimed there needed to be a baffle installed in the wall. I was back 2 days later for it to sit for three months waiting on a new compressor (pre-covid at that). The hour and a half drive one way was the icing on the cake.

In 2016 we bought a brand new Open Range Light 297RLS. We were newbies but got very lucky with this RV. We go on multiple regional trips every year and have been on 3 cross country trips. It has yet to go to the shop for repairs. Just to a local, non-dealer to replace and lube the wheel bearings just in case, before last fall's desert SW trip. You never know when an RV will need repair though. So there are SOME well made RVs out there.

    Excellent tips.....great info guys!
Can't stress enough about getting your own private inspector. The dealer might say that they do a very thorough inspection. I say, I understand, but I'd like everything verified since your tech works for you, and my inspector is working for me. As Izzy and MJ said, if the dealer is opposed to a private inspector....walk! My RV that I'm buying was inspected this past Wednesday. It was a 6 1/2 hour inspection complete with a thorough report and pictures. Also with that, I had a Fluid Analysis Report done. If you are buying a pre-owned unit....GET THE FLUID ANANLYSIS! Yes it is extra, but worth it. The inspector takes a sample of the Coolant, Engine Oil, Transmission Oil, and Generator Oil. These samples are then sent out to a lab to be analyzed. This type of testing will give you a true understanding of what's happening in the engine, finding corrosion, seizing, or something that could be potentially very costly down the road. The cost of my inspection was $600 + $129 for the fluid analysis report. Not cheap, but worth the piece of mind. My report is supposed to come back emailed to me on Monday. If all checks out, I'll take delivery probably Tuesday or Wednesday next week....Keep ya posted.

We intended to purchase a class A RV the spring/summer of 2021.
We had been looking at RV trader to get an idea of what was available and at what cost.
An RV showed up early January for sale by the current owner that we decided to purchase.
We talked with the current owner and scheduled a shared expense RVIA inspection.
Three weeks later we flew down to South Carolina, did an in person walk thru and test drive, and then bought the RV.
The inspection put both of us at ease.
I knew what the owner had said was true.
Both of us knew that there were no "Hidden" issues that needed to be dealt with.
    Always have the RV inspected.

We were selling ours privately but we live in it and were planning to work around the build timing. And then a few flags arose...we believe it's not the right time either. We will deal with this timing and wait it out.

I'm not comfortable with that. We're back looking at Grand Design again. And we definitely believe in 3rd party inspection!

It is normal for finance companies to pay a "commission" back to dealers. So if you finance through the dealer, they can sell you the vehicle for less, because they are getting that kickback from the financer. That's not a red flag, that's the industry.
If there is no prepayment penalty, you can even get a better deal by taking the dealer financing and paying the loan off in full shortly afterward. (And refinancing with a better loan source if you prefer.)

  • @4everlandrv988

You guys are the bomb! That's why we love watching you.
Everything you have talked about in your last few videos; Don't Do It!, Do It!, and The Secret, are everything Dee and I have thought about, talked about, and considered before we make our purchase next year.
One thing you might want to add to your list of of things is... "If you don't own a home or have a permanent address financing will be difficult and more expensive."
We learned this straight from a salesperson AND a finance manager from a well known large dealership. By the time I'm done I'm sure you will get the general idea.
Our plan was to sell our sticks and bricks, take the proceeds from the sale and purchase our RV with 50%+ down, and have enough left over to start traveling. The salesperson informed us it would be harder to get it financed because we didn't have a permanent residence. Just fyi, when we go to a dealership we tell the salesperson right up front "we are not buying today" you would be surprised at the difference in the service we get.
Anyway, wanting to get on the road as soon as possible I called the same dealership that we went to and asked to talk to "someone in finance". I ended up leaving a voicemail, but my call was returned within 24 hours. I explained our plan and asked about financing. He was very up front and gave me the name of an institution that would finance us and the difference between having a residence and not. The finance interest would jump 1-1.5%. That may not sound like a lot but over 15-20 years on...to use your example of 100k dollars, that's a lot of money.
We also agree on the extended warranty, and DEFINITELY spend the money on a professional RV inspector. We have been researching and reviewing things for five years. May seem like a long time, but Dee was still working until last December.
Although we have done our homework thoroughly, we still appreciate your input and respect your experience and expertise.
Izzy, if you can't trust a cop, who can you trust.
We love you guys and wish you could be in Richmond on Tuesday would love to meet you.

One little note on trading in vs selling privately. I'm not a current Rv'er, just exploring the idea, however I would assume Rvs are just like cars, you pay sales tax based on net sale. If you are buying a 100k unit and they are giving you 20k on your trade, your sales tax is based on 80k. If you decide to sell yourself, your sales tax is based on 100k. So now you need to subtract the additional taxes you paid from the additional you received from your private sales. Add in hassle, decide if you actually did better.

  • @lyfandeth
    @lyfandeth Рік тому +1

In your case of trading in vs selling your old rv privately? Remember that if your old rv is traded in, the new purchase price is lowered by that amount, and you may save $7500 or more because there is no sales tax on the value of the trade in. Dealers are all aware kf this and often use it to make their lowball offer seem like a better bargain overall.

You guys are not "bashing" dealers or salesmen---you are educating the buyers.
Don't forget to add storage fees (if needed) to the calculations.
I am looking for my first coach. I have been researching for months and have visited countless dealerships and have been in dozens of different coaches but none of them was "the one" for me.
Three days ago I was driving to Walmart and I saw "the one"!!! It is a 2013 King Aire. She is the most beautiful coach I have ever seen. It dwarfed the 2012, 43-foot Discovery parked next to her. Tonight I will do the research on insurance and call the dealership this week to find out more details.

I’m new to your channel. We are currently saving for our first motor home purchase. We have so far landed on a Jayco Redhawk 22c SE. From what I see and have learned so far I want a gently used 1 year old or less with 10,000km or less and some time on the generator etc. as we hope to avoid that initial off the lot depreciation as well we hope some of the warrantied kinks have been worked out. I really appreciate this direct and straight shooting video. I just finished ready several reviews about the dealership we think we want to deal with, the salesman spent an hour with us even though we told him straight away we are still saving and looking to narrow down our ideal coach. I think the amount of research was appreciated by the salesman who remained attentive and invested in providing us a great first time experience. I am hesitant now that I see a pattern in post purchase service so we may ask him a bunch of questions in this area or start to look elsewhere. Thank you for all the great things to consider and save extra for our first RV purchase. We are excited to keep learning with you until we pull the trigger on our new adventure. Cheers

Years ago, I was considering buying stock in a known RV maker business. After hearing all of the “imperfections” and how RVs are made and problems that RVs have, I am glad I did not buy stock in any of those companies.
I am pleased to learn that cargo vans are much better choices and have decided to target used Ford Transits in my search. I have had it suggested to me to consider an already converted van to cut down on the costs of building the interior.
My question now, is, how can you tell how well the interior is prepared and insulated, wired , plumbed and free of rust?

I have an infrared camera ( like the kind they used to find the Boston bomber. He showed his body heat as red and white while hiding under a boat) while I purchased it to detect problem areas in horses we were also taught that it shows insulation and i.perfections in the walls, floors, ceiling etc. I have never tried it for that application. I will take that along with me when I go to purchase.

My wife and I bought our first class A motorhome about 2 months ago. We included a warranty and paid for a PDI (not sure this is the norm). In our "excitement", something about the warranty didn't feel right; nonetheless, we got it. We kept asking questions about it, but the finance guy was a "smooth talker". But, we did ask if we could cancel it at anytime and he said yes. To make a long story short, we canceled the warranty which resulted in over $7000 coming off the loan and got our own warranty for about $4000. In order to get the warranty, they had to do an inspection. They found a leak in one of the leveling jacks, and a light up front wouldn't come on. As I said, I don't know if paying for a PDI is the norm, but it came with a 30-day period where they would fix major issues/components. Under the PDI, the dealership fixed the jack, the electrical issue, and a generator issue we noticed where it would shut off after a short period of time. Thanks for sharing your experiences...stay safe!!

    • @EndlessRVing
      @EndlessRVing  4 роки тому +2

Thanks for sharing. You should it have to pay for a PDI that is normally done by the dealership. You also confirmed the reason why we always suggest a 3rd party inspection prior to purchase. Thanks for sharing.

All very good tips just wish I had seen this video before my wife and I made most of those mistakes. My theory though is with cars, or RVs is no matter how good a deal you get, and it may be great ,you still got the shaft. Thank you for sharing these tips. We purchased a travel trailer 5 years ago and were considering purchasing an upgrade. Not now. On our last camping trip we noticed sooo many new RVs and new trucks. The owners were first time owners and it was obvious. I'd like to add that since demand for new RV's is high, manufacturers are facing delayed shipments for parts. Your new RV may be missing parts that you would be responsible for if you did not have a proper or third party inspection. Once it leaves the lot they may not be responsible for it. Be sure to check the purchase aggrement.

One of the things that you forgot to mention is the trade value is applied against the total balance before you pay taxes. So a person will want to look at what trade in value they were given and understand the differences between sales tax for the total sale vs. Sales tax for the total amount less a trade-in because that value especially on high
dollar items can be pretty extensive

Great tips and super helpful . Wish we knew good tips like this a couple months ago . We bought our first RV and didn’t know much when we did . I was angry with those dealer prep fees and bull crap delivery fees . Tried but couldn’t negotiate much . Mainly cause I bought in this high demand market . The salesman said if you don’t want it we will sell it to someone else today . It was the last one left in the lot . They had five new motor homes on that Monday and by the time we could get there on Thursday only one left . Did get talked into extended warranty and do regret that extra 7k . But live and learn . Going try to pay off in five years to minimize the interest . Next time I wouldn’t go to camping world and I would buy from a smaller local dealer
    Thanks for a great video

We have had enough problems with the dealer we bought from. Having to wait 2 weeks to get our recall and warranty work started. No phone calls back. Had to demand a manager.
