My dad was a big bass fisherman a long time ago and he has a bunch of old shimano reels, a few of them are the side stab 2000rb. I started fishing seriously a few years ago and he told me that i was welcome to take any of his old rods. They’re all very nice rods and reels but they have been sitting in the garage for years and years and they’re quite dusty and dirty. They still work great but I’d like to take them apart and clean them up and put them back together and make them as good as new. This just stands as a testament to the quality of this reel. They still work great after about 30 years and show no sign of stopping. This video is a great help. Thanks.
As always... your video saved me a lot of frustration. Helped me with my Shimano Baitrunner 3500 and now my Shimano Sidestab 4000. Thank you Dennis !!!
Thank you Dennis for the video. Over the last 50 years, I have purchased many spin casting reels for myself and the boss. These Shimano reels are her preferred choice over the last 20 years or so. She has never complained about a problem as long as routine maintenance is performed. Which is my job in this relationship. A rear drag is her preference for fish fighting ability no matter what the species. A big 👍 from both of us and we look forward to your next video.
I like everything about this reel except that handle. It seems like it would get in the way particularly if all your other reels have traditional handles. My Daiwa rear drag didn’t arrive today so I had no reel to work on. Great videos Dennis.
You can always trade out the handle if you want the traditional one. A lot of folks like the dual handle as it mimics the dual handle of a low profile bait caster, which is used for the same type of fishing - Thanks Chris - Dennis
Hi Dennis. Love the video. I have (4) Shimano Symetre - 2000 RH rear drag reels, which are similar. Ive been looking for the 2000 size aluminun spools. Have you seen these anywhere? Mine have a couple nicks, and I would like to replace. Keep up good work!
Enjoyed the video. I have a Shimano similar to this reel. It has quick release and rear drag. Not sure I understand the value or purpose of the quick release.
You don't need to touch the line when casting with the quick release feature. You cast it similar to a closed faced bait caster but pulling the trigger when you are in the middle of the cast. That's the value. Of course, you can manually flip the bail as well - Dennis
Hi Dennis. Love the video. Thanks for posting. Ive got (4) - 2000 Symetre RH reels which have similar rear drag. Ive looked a bit for some additional 2000 size aluminum spools. Have you come across a source for these spools? (I’d like to have a heavy and light line spool for each reel.) I know they make graphite spools, but I prefer the aluminum ones. Keep up good work! I watch your posts almost daily.
Thank you for the video Dennis. I have the Spirex 2000 from late 90's as well as a newer one from 2017 or so. Newer one is junk by comparison. On the older one I am having a problem with the line getting caught in the plastic piece that holds the line roller. There is a small gap there but I believe its always been like that. So when I retrieve a lure the line will slide into that area where the roller fits in to that plastic piece which is attached to the bail wire. Best I can explain. Any ideas? Thanks again.
I may have worn down over time. You may be able to correct this by replacing the easy cast assembly. I've had the sale problem on a few older ones, but I just live with it - Dennis
@@2ndChanceTackle I was thinking of trying to use heavier line but I use it for finesse presentations. 6# test gets caught more than 8. Wonder if the quickfire mechanism on the new one is compatible. Dont really use the newer one its heavy and started having problems after a year. Thanks for the advice.
I haven't seen that recently. Some older reels did metal only, but not recently - I wonder if they broke down. Best to get the schematic and check what you have against it - Dennis
Good Job!! Is there anyway I'd be able to send in a reel for service? I have a Daiwa Sealine 47H, I watched one of your videos for maintenance and grease and oiling them, still having issues with it
Not sure. That was a customer reel, so I do have it to look for the serial. You can always contact Shimano on that question. You can call their customer support at 1-877-577-0600 or contact them by email by following this link fish.shimano.com/content/fish/northamerica/us/en/homepage/Contact-Us.html. Dennis
Dennis, love your videos! I have a Shimano Sidestab 2500RE and the rear drag does not have a screw to take out to get it off. Any idea how to get this rear drag off to service it? Everything works nicely except the drag.
Not sure and I don't have one in the shop to check. Is there a button under the cap hiding a screw? Can you get the side plate off without removing th cap? If you can, there may be a clip holding the cap under the side plate
NO SIR, CAN'T get the side plate off without removing the cap. I am buggering the cap trying to prey it off. That is why I stopped and contacted you. Can the drag be rebuilt on this reel?
You cannot lighten the foot. The only option is to zip tie the short end to the rod if necessary, but ideally, find the rods that fit it. Sorry - Dennis

I did my sidestab 3000 today and it was different in that it had a worm gear like my diawa tournament for oscillation
Yes - the designer did change between models. Thanks for the note - Dennis

These reels are 15+ years old and the spools are harder to find. Check Ebay. Most sources for new old stock have been exhausted - Dennis
