Thanks Guys, a nice mix of content. We didn't make it to Delos during our charter - that darn Meltemi - but we are hatching plans to get there sooner rather than later.
I did get an Ultra Chain Hook and we used it every night - setup as a bridle - and thought it was a great help in easing the snatch and obviously taking all the load off the windlass. Would be really interested in a Technical Corner episode on the pros/cons of a bridle versus single point snubber attachment. We've also played around with techniques for trying the ease the yawing at anchor - such as unfurling a slip of Main and offsetting the Boom - and would also like to see this aspect of anchoring explored further... I'm just saying.
While you were heading west from Kythnos, we were heading up there from Serifos. Yes, that bay (or series of bays) does provide great protection. Just a word of warning though, it's become very popular with the charter set and so it can be very crowded on the nights before and after turnaround day for the Athens/Attica-based marinas. On our first night we were one of only four boats in the Apokrousi section, and the next night there was about 24..! Witnessing the antics of these people trying to force their way into an already crowded anchorage, mainly because they were running late and didn't have a Plan B, led us to temporarily rename the place "Dickhead Bay".
And you might remember that we briefly discussed the subject of trying to keeps breads fresh at sea. We tried something new, vacuum sealing fresh loafs and croissants; it actually worked out pretty good, with the croissants still virtually as good as new after 8 days or more. Some of the bread started to show a spot or two of surface mould (I think because the barker - Lidl - doesn't use preservative and normally expects their breads to be consumed same-day), but it was perfectly good, especially with a light toasting in a pan with some butter/oil. The product we used was the Vesta handheld unit (£20 from Amazon), fairly small and light, and rechargeable via USB-C, together with the Vesta Zipper Vacuum Seal (double seal-lock) bags (reusable, microwaveable, freezable). You may want to have a look... Obviously, it wouldn't keep breads for an Atlantic crossing, but it's also applicable to a range of other foodstuffs.
Anyway, fair winds as you venture further eastwards and on to Turkey...
Hi Robert, thanks for the ideas on snubbers, yes i will be producing an advanced anchoring video and covering snubbers in some detail, I agree there are plenty of 'dickhead bays' out there so the more anchoring info the better I think!
I will definitely try out the vacuum bag idea as well so thanks for that.
I agree with you about Delos. Quite an extraordinary place.
I also agree with you about anchors & the Meltimi. After 4 days of 30+kt winds in Serifos, I’m glad we didn’t skimp on the chain & anchor too. I think we’ve watched over 50 boats drag their anchors trying to dig in through the seaweed. It really was a case of Meltimi madness each afternoon. Unfortunately one drifted down on us in the process, but no major damage in the end.

Excited about the water purifier...been looking for ages.....thought the LED innovation would bring about a reasonable price, but then I looked. OMG, over a grand. That's just bonkers. Please carry on installing these things though - very useful, even if our budget won't stretch.

I allways have a string attached to my cap, with a safety pin at both ends. One end pinned to the cap band and the other end pinned to my clothes. So I never loose a cap 😊

What a great video! Delos is absolutely fantastic. You have done a marvellous job in explaining the history of this marvellous ancient centre of the Earth. I’m also glad do you going to meet Josh Post and all other folks, like bums on a boat etc. in this event organised by ocean cruisers. Say hi to them all. Can’t wait to see the clip of your travels.

Great video, looking forward to the meet up with the other channels. I get loads of comment about anchors and anchor rode, but having just witnessed the destruction of the two sugar scoops on a catamaran that dragged it's anchor onto the rocks, I'm glad of our anchor setup - Ultra 39kg and 60m of 318L chain - most important item on the boat.

Agree. When we were anchored in Megalo Livadi on Serfifos during this recent round of the Meltemi, a Cat came in and decided it would be a good idea to take a mooring line down to one of the old heavy-duty anchor chains left over from the iron ore mining days. It took just one night of admittedly pretty decent wind for the rusty old chain to eat through the line and let the Cat go for a wonder through the anchorage. Luckily someone remained onboard, and I was able to alert them with a flurry of whistle blasts... Ground tackle is THE most important aspect of any boat.
I don't have filters on my pressure water, but have them on my foot operated Whale pump. Very happy with this arrangement.

Well I think most of this episode was shot on the GoPro 9 and a Lumix GH5, but I also have some full frame cameras, C300, Canon 6d etc. Iucky that I have a lot of professional gear from our days shooting documentaries, so good mics etc.
Why not install water pressure unit to increase pressure at the sink instead of more filters? Filters are supposed to be changed every 3 months unless you have a lot of sediment in you tank then it’s change filters more often or clean out water tanks. I’ve been fussing with water filters half my life. Lol. Crawling under the sink to change filters was the worst. I’ve watched other sailing channels that fixed pressure issues with extra pressure unit. Good luck. Hope you can get a water maker too.
Don't worry, UK is still member of the European Cultural Convention which promotes the Heritage Days, along with much more states than just EU, including Russia, Turkey, Eastern Europe, Caucasus countries... and even UK 😉

You should really say due to Brexit we can no longer live and work indefinitely in the EU and now only up to 90 days in any 180-day period. Hence the trips to Croatia (extra 90 days) and Turkey (non EU). So from paying £240M a week EU membership it now costs us £800M a week in lost GDP and trade.

Really useful info on UV water purification. Would you mind sharing a guide price on the system you installed? Also loved the segment on Delos. We started talking about stuff we do now that will still be around in 2500 years... couldn't think of anything except for the Pacific plastic dump.
Follow the link in the description and it’ll take you to their site to order off line, it’s the cheapest way and the code will give you 10% off but the retail price is just under £500 for the 2liter/min version with the more expensive filter and the dedicated tap which is what we got.
Delos is looking no worse for wear. The wind and the archaeologists carried away most of it.
Shame you couldn’t reuse the brass faucet hardware. Curious if you hung the new filter off the old cold water line or does the new tap mix hot and cold?
Can you somehow use a pressure washer and powerful surfactants to give your tanks a proper blast and clean? Your filters shouldn't get too dirty that fast so there may be a lot of accumulated algae and sediment being picked up
Tanks are clean and I even have a filter canister with hoze-lock connectors to filter the water on the way into the tanks as well as a pre-filter for the nature-pure filter but the flow was dreadful.

Wonder if you’re experiencing any pitting as Stainless steel tends to be softer than galvanised chain?

Have you watched the "anchoring 101 ' and 'Which Anchor?"' videos we did? that has a lot of technical info on the chain, there's also lots of info on our website as well. But basically all stainless steel is not equal! Get the right stuff and you won't look back.

You using the Ultra anchor for a while and now we would like to know how satisfied you are in comparing it with your former Delta anchor and your Rocna anchor?
Moreover you have an Inoxchain ,which factory and do you see/ notice some damages?,that what they often said about inox chains and this material in combination with saltwater.

Yes the Ultra anchor has been a game changer for us, people say it's too expensive but I tell you if they were on a boat as I have been for the last 10 days with constant 30knot + winds they would not be whinging about cost. I think if I still had the Delta not the Ultra I would have headed for a marina for the last 2 weeks to avoid this wind and do that once or twice and the Ultra is paid for!
Our 318 Cromox chain is from Ketten Welder in Germany, definitely the best chain you can get and again not cheap, but I sleep well! Have a look at our 'Which Anchor' and the 'Anchor 101 ' videos if you haven't already there's lots f info in there as well as on our website. I will be doing a big up date of all our equipment on the website over the winter, but it's always worth looking on there as I try to regularly update on how things are going. The inox chain isn't impervious to salt water damage of course, but it's the best you'll get. Main point is to keep the chain locker clean as with all chains but also wash the chain in fresh water as much as possible. I'm going to convert the salt water deck wash to fresh water this winter. After I fit the watermaker!

@@filiphering4765 Hi Filip, well yes to work effectively a snubber needs to be long. I think the most common mistake I see on ground tackle is snubbers that are too short. If you think about it it’s all really obvious. If you think of a snubber as being like the spring in a cars suspension you can see a car with no suspension will transmit every bump up through the vehicle & all the joints along the way will be subjected to harsh shock loads. Anchor without a snubber and you effectively have no spring in your suspension other than the catenary in your chain. Well for the past 10 days the wind has been such that there is no catenary in the chain and without a snubber everything would be getting shock loaded as every wave hit the boat. This may just break something or more likely yank the anchor out of the seabed. So the snubbers job is to have enough stretch to cope with ( in our case) 26 tons of boat being hit by a gust or wave. I have about 10 meters of 3 strand rode on that snubber, I’m about to make a new one as that ones had a bit of a beating this season & I’ll probably make it longer. There’s no downside to it being longer, it’s just better suspension. You don’t want the shock forces on the system being able to stretch the snubber beyond the point it has nothing left. Remember Youngs Modus from physics lessons at school? The cross sectional area / material / length of the rode will determine how much stretch is available before the material moves into plastic deformation (damage) I have a second snubber for really heavy weather which is thicker, it therefore has to be longer to still keep enough stretch. I maybe should have fitted it this past week but I was observing my standard snubber and it was coping pretty well, inspecting it after it looks like any damage is down to chafe and not over stressing but I can guarantee you if It were say 5meters not 10 it would have been being pulled harder than what it could stretch for ie beyond its Youngs Modulus and would have taken some damage or possibly snapped. Sorry that rambled on, basically a snubber needs to be long enough to not stretch to the point of damage and that usually about 2/3rds the length of the boat using the sort of rode you would want as a spring at the dock for your displacement of boat.

@@guidouytterhaegen I mainly pick a title to go with the thumbnail and that was the best shot for the thumbnail so dictated the title. This is the Med so it’s no South Atlantic swell but it’s certainly pounding in anyones book, I didn’t show a lot of it because just watching a boat bashing through the waves gets boring. To me anyway

Well of course you are right on the pronunciation of Patron, but whoever came up with the online patron system decided to name it Patreon. So to be honest I've no idea how you are supposed to pronounce patron with an extra E inserted in there, maybe you're right and I should just call it patron and have done with it!

Yes YT is getting more and more annoying with its adds. I deleted 3 out of the 5 mid roll adds YT automatically inserted. We are looking at a way around this but YT basically give you nothing if you have no mid roll adds. We are looking at alternatives.

Not sure about worldwide, but where I am (USA) I can “skip” adds longer than 12-15 seconds, once they get that far. I don’t mind doing that. What amazes me is when UA-cam inserts a 45 minute add in the middle of 15 minute video.
@@brucefay5126 We're looking at a new platform called 'special tv' they have no adds just a small subscription. Personally I think this is better for everyone but it will only work if people start using it in preference to YT. We shall see.

How condescending and unworldly you can be. First the comment that you are happy not to belong to Europe anymore, which I thought was meant as a joke. But then also say that fortunately you were able to leave before the "tourists" arrived. Then what are you?
I’m not sure what you were watching but we’ve always said what a stupid thing Brexit was a certainly didn’t vote for it. And it seems you’re not a sailor. The joy of getting to out of the way places in your own boat is that you are independent and certainly do not feel like a tourist.
@@svfairisle My humble apologies. My first impression was indeed that you did not think Brexit was a success, but I must have misunderstood the comment in the vlog. I did not grow up native speaking English, although I worked and lived in Wellingborough for two years. Also in Italy, France, Germany, the Netherlands and Morocco. That aside.
But I have had a wrong perception.
On the other hand about the tourists: We are tourists.
I 've been boating and sailing for 45 years now, so I pretty much know what I 'm talking about. And if you go somewhere for pleasure and look around and walk there, then you are a tourist. Just like the people who arrive there by bus and probably have fewer opportunities to do so in a slightly freer way.
This said, I like the channel. It is nice to watch, nice content, etc.
And most impotant: we agree about Brexit.
@@MrBertHeylen Yes sorry you missed the irony of the comment we should be more careful especially as we have a number of people watching with English not as a first language. And of course you are right that we are all tourists visiting someone else's country, but the point of what we are trying to put across to the viewer is that when you get to somewhere on your own steam sailing your own home you certainly don't feel like a tourist. People want to know what it's like doing what we do and the truth of that is that you certainly do not feel like a tourist so the comment that we had a whole morning looking around Delos before the 'tourists' came is how we felt and I think how anyone would feel in that situation. That's an important thing to get across in the film if people are going to have an idea of what it's really like to have your home as a yacht.
