  • Fair Isle is now considerably lighter with a whole load of now redundant machinery removed, we will start on filling the gaps with new stuff in the new year!
    We have had some time to explore as well though and Cesme has some great history and big surprises in the surrounding villages.

    Gosh, for your last video of the year I reckon you must have covered just about everything above decks, below decks, walking, cycling, engineering and cat loving. The trip to the ruins and your intriguing story of the naval battle were utterly fascinating. For all your videos of this year (and previous years, of course) many, many heartfelt thanks. They're quite superb and have brought me so much pleasure. Wishing you a safe, peaceful and Happy Christmas and New Year!

I was wondering what you were going to do with your new found space. Good luck with the water maker. I guess it is only the boat which is subject to the 90 day rule if you are going to Greece. Poor generator, looked like a Mastervolt, like we have... Touch wood on ours, but I'm really interested in you Lithium upgrade, look forward to that. Oh, and we're keeping the generator for the domestic 240v demands that it copes with so well, you need a vast and vastly expensive inverter otherwise. Keep the bikes! and maintain them, although you did seem to have rather a lot? For shopping and sight seeing the bikes are perfect, so I'm with Judy on that, sorry Steve. Merry Christmas and great video!

    • @svfairisle
      @svfairisle  2 роки тому +1

      Yes it’s a Mastervolt Whisper6, the original was replaced by Mastervolt after 2 years because it had so many problems. This one’s lasted 15 years but had been nothing but trouble, glad to be rid of it! I’m sure it was the instillation at fault though, too much back pressure in the exhaust. We won’t install a large inverter, we stay away from mains appliances.

      @@svfairisle what about the kettle and microwave, we don't have a washing,machine but it is on the list... And one of those double grill toaster things that does so much, Yes, I know you can do so much with a gas oven, but they all have their pros and cons,,, The bores, pistons and head looked in good condition, did you find out what was wrong with?

    • @svfairisle
      @svfairisle  2 роки тому +1

      By process of elimination it was a big end. We will see for sure when Enis has it refurbished. We don't have a microwave so it's just the kitchen appliances which our 2KW inverter can cope with and we have a second 2KW inverter in the Bluetti if we need more.

  • @saraofnorthwales

    Lithium battery banks will cause a conventional generator to overheat as it draws more amps than a conventional battery bank. Just something to watch out for if installing lithium. That's why they sell Dc to DC chargers ...

    • @svfairisle
      @svfairisle  2 роки тому

      DC-DC chargers are very inefficient and you would need to parallel them to get good charging amps. It’s the most common way of dealing with the low internal resistance on lithium but not necessary the best. I will charge the house bank directly from the alternator ( which is I think what you meant, rather than generator) , but with several things in place the make sure it doesn’t cook itself!

    • @saraofnorthwales
      @saraofnorthwales 2 роки тому

      @@svfairisle I was watching a video today just before I saw yours where they cooked the alternator on a Lithium bank. The solution they used was a temp sender to a controller to a relay. Seemed to do the trick.

    • @svfairisle
      @svfairisle  2 роки тому

      @Sara of North Wales Yes that’s at the Victron test centre. I will use a temp sender and the belt manager settings on our Balmar regulator but also fit a Sterling alternator protector and have a sensing wire so the Balmar can perform a controlled shut down in the event of a BMS cot off, which is the other big problem to deal with.

  • @howardbeer5214
    @howardbeer5214 2 роки тому +1

    I told you over 1 year ago its not the engine. The alternator generator bearings had seized !

    • @svfairisle
      @svfairisle  2 роки тому +1

      yes I remember... wasn't that though! The generator turned freely! It's definitely something in the bottom end, strange though as you normally know all about if if your big-ends go! It's going to be repaired so we will see when they get the sump off.

  • @emilioplentz
    @emilioplentz 2 роки тому +1

    But without the generator you'll have a big difference in the arm lever. How are you going to compensate it ?

    • @svfairisle
      @svfairisle  2 роки тому +1

      Arm lever? Are you talking about ballast ratios & righting moment? If so it’s not a problem with a 26 ton boat to loose that weight. It’s in the centre of the boat and I will be moving the batteries to that position so that’s overall there weight will be more central. I will also consider taking the second anchor off the bow and storing it, along with the chain in that mid ships position on ocean crossings.

    T-9 developed by Boing is definitively better than WD-40 for my purposes: protects from rust in a little bit too damp environ while it maintains a super smooth and lasting surfaces on woodworking machines of *cast steel* (eg tables on my saws and jointer). WD-40 and many other slippery 'ointments' contains silicon that can screw up further applications of stains and seals on the wood, while T-9 is silicon free. I was sooo happy when I was able to buy the entire store stock of 4 cans travelling through the Netherlands, and yes, the store was a bike shop!

      I watch your channel since your first boat tour video and I think it's just fair to give you a little feedback. Also I am launching a new channel about my little 25 meter trawler. I want to have 10 vids done before I publish the first one and I know how frustrating it is to push the quality just a little bit and it takes a day in front of the laptop to do so. For things most people don't even think about it. But trust me, people will notice if you go the extra mile.

      @@born2sail yes we appreciate all feed back. Nothings ever perfect but it’s good to know the bits that annoy people the most! We spent 30 years making documentaries for the BBC and others and a 30 min doco would usually take months to shoot, be 2weeks in the edit and we would employ several other members of crew along the way. This is just us on a VERY cut back working arrangement so somethings always going to give!

    You kids need a couple of them new E-Bikes that way you can peddle while your on flat land and then let the bike peddle for you when your going uphill... LOL... people that have them use them more than they used their normal bikes. They say it make site seeing so much more enjoyable. I told my wife that I wanted one and she told me that she's pretty sure they have a age requirement on them. I'm not sure what she meant by that statement. But I figure she was saying that I'm to old to be riding a E-Bike... I do get my Can Am Spyder out a few times a year and I ride that. It's got 3 wheels. So I think if they had a E-Bike with 3 wheels then maybe she'd let me have one... LOL... The price I pay for marring a younger lady... LOL...
    Well you kids be blessed in Jesus name.. BBE..

    Getting rid of the generator is a mistake, cloudy weather cold rain no sun and that engine alternator will not keep up, many videos already on sailers having to do dock jumping and plugging in as a single system is not sufficient a hybrid system like Elco is a much better solution plus those lithium batteries end up in a landfill polluting the ground unlike lead acid batteries which are 99% recyclable

      Well from the tests we've done this year where I've been effectively running the boat on 2kW of Lithium with no problems I really dont think our bank which will have 4 times that storage will give us too many problems, but we will see.
      On the recycling issue you are just wrong. There are now many companies that claim 100% recovery of all metals: Lithium, Colbalt, Aluminium, Nickel, Manganese,. And as we will soon have every car on the planet running off these batteries the industry to recycle will be huge. I also think that it will become standard that old batteries are taken when new ones are needed as part of the deal, this is something that should have happened with lead acid batteries but never have. The high cost and current thinking on renewables should provide the impetus for governments and industries to set this up now.

    I just don’t get how patrons think they owe all these people on UA-cam to fund their endless vacations just because they put out a video.

      No one owes anyone anything. If people like our videos it's great that Patreons support us. It's the Patreons who keep sailing channels going on UA-cam and allow everyone else to have free content.
