Shaye sounds like a young Louis Armstrong. Great tone, control and embouchure. The whole band is marvelous and playing the best music ever made in America. I'm really happy it's remembered and lives on today.
I can’t stop listening to this. It’s the best version of “Tom Cat Blues” I’ve ever heard. Transcendent mastery. Everybody is perfectly on point. Pure genius!
Well, this is it. Fan of Tuba Skinny for years, have just listened to this performance about two dozen times side by side with other favorite clips, and although Jubilee Stomp is a very close second, this interpretation of Tom Cat Blues emerges as my very favorite. The intricate way the three lead instruments interweave their riffs into a tight whole that is mathematically perfect and yet soulfully free -- where have I heard anything like that outside of the music of Bach? If anybody thinks polyphony died in 1750, send 'em here! Shaye and company, I think putting your playing in the same league as Bach's music says everything I can say -- and it's true! Judges, give 'em the gold cup.
I was born in New Orleans and lived there the first 35 years of my life, 15 years of which were in the French Quarter. I am al fine artist living only 65 miles away in Gulfport Mississippi but several professional obligations prevent me from visiting New Orleans on a regular basis. I can only state that when I listen to this band perform I feel like I am right there in front of them. They remind me of the days when I was a teenager and would walk to the French Quarter just to lean against a lamp post and listen to the live jazz music being played. Through their music, this band generously shares the true heart, soul, and essence of New Orleans.
I love how robin does a tip of his hat at 2:57. No doubt to acknowledge someone leaving a tip in the bucket. Nice gesture. I don’t seem to be able to go a day without watching this performance at least one time. Everybody is spot on with their playing.
The English Clarinet player is pretty good as well.but then again us Brits have been playing Trad and New Orleans for many Decades. This group just happens to have a woman on board
@@alfching2499 Tuba Skinny doesn't "just happen" to have a woman on board. Shaye is the leader and the center that holds the whole group together and makes it what it is. Without Shaye there would be no Tuba Skinny.
Wow! What a fabulous performance, and a wonderful video - great picture and sound. And my favorite musicians. Thank you for this. I don't get out much any more thanks to the "late effects" of the polio I had back in 1945, so thanks to you and the other good people who record this so others can enjoy it. And I do enjoy it. Ed
Amazing, brings back memories of when my grandfather would take me to see his pals playing in a street band. And sometimes he would join in on guitar. This is in Belgium during the war.
Original recorded by King Oliver and Jelly Roll Morton in 1924! Oliver was a great mute player as is Shaye. Her tone, attack, timing and swing are incredible.
Thanks to your posting and to Tuba Skinny, I'm not getting anything done. Just want to sit here and listen to their music play, tune after tune, hour after hour. And I am soooooo totally fine with that!
My favorite performance ever by T.S. Everyone nailed it on this one. Shaye got a good workout. Probably should do that a little more often. We could always use a bit more coronet.
Tnx for posting this. Being a tuba-player myself I have been following Tuba Skinny for a few years on You-tube and I was delighted to see them live in Dendermonde (Belgium) two weeks ago.
Just Perfect front line - but let's hear it for the banjo, two guitars, tuba and washboard - they contribute so much to the overall sound of this band. Superb - I think I'll play it again!!
@@usuariodelgoogle technically it is a banjo. In modern terms they call it a "banjitar." Its tuned low to high E A D G B E. It's made to be a crossover instrument for guitar players
Don’t know if I still have the chops to play with a group this great but man would I like to practice and try it. A trombone beckons...love your music TS. Keep it up!

At last Shaye a bit in the front. I follow Tuba Skinny for some years and it is a pleasure how Shaye leads the band in her subtle way and plays her old cornet. By the way she is also a great piano player.
Excellent as usual...I Wish there was a way ya'll could Play "Jelly, Jelly, Jelly" "Jelly stains on my mind" and have Erika sing Billy Eckstine's lyrics.

Embouchure maybe, but I admire her mouth shape 😉
Well, Louis Armstrong was still from a different class...
I always like it when you have this clarinet player sitting in with you .
Always a great band, but I do think Ewan adds a little something extra...
I agree! He's my fav on the clarinet

So good! Shaye's cornet work is top notch on this one. The rest of the crew are firing on all cylinders as well.

Thanks for posting another joyous performance by this wonderful band. I particularly liked Shaye Cohn's cornet, she is an amazing musician.
