This is one of the best games I've ever played and is singlehandedly responsible for giving birth to my love for roguelike/lites. The insane amount of possible builds and playstyles give this game a replay value and a satisfying learning curve like few other games. I urge everyone to give this game a try.

From what I have gathered it seems its Tales of Maj'Eyal and Caves of Qud that take the cake for best roguelites around. Dwarf fortress I heard is nuts as well.

ToME has a lot of nice modern QoL improvements too that make the game so much better without compromising on its traditional roguelike foundation, and I wish more games in the genre took inspiration from how ToME does things.

And to top it off... Dark God is a really nice guy, too. I strongly suggest getting a hold of Tales of Middle Earth; which predated Tales of Maj Eyal. It was the best angand variant in my opinion bar none.

ToME4 is my most played game on Steam, and also my favourite Roguelike. After over a 1000 hours put into it, I am proud to say that I have achieved the entirety of two wins!
ToME4 is great at every level - it's awesome for beginners, because every traditional RL system is streamlined, so it's easy to jump straight into it without getting bogged down into long-term resource management.
It's aslo great for veterans, because the amount of classes, skills, and difficulty levels is one of the highest in the genre, ensuring a huge field for exploration and experimentation. A campaigh on Insane or Madness can easily take you a hundred hours if you are being careful with every move. The game keeps getting regular updates, DLCs, and advanced features every half a year or so, so it remains fresh even after you've beaten it several times. Man, I just love ToME.

Im not a big fan of dungeon crawler RPGs but I did loved this game. I remember creating a mage type character (I believe it was called something like "Arcane Blade") that autocasted all sorts of magic bolts whenever I melee'd an enemy. The funny/interesting part is that all I had to do was invest points in Magic and my character began dealing absurd amounts of physical damage with armor piercing stone bolts but also other magic elements as well. It also had insane amounts of physical and magic resistance granted by passives and protective spells. There is also a passive once you reach lvl 42 that makes your character hit with your bare hands each time you land a melee attack, and that made the autocasting skill proc twice per attack (almost doubling your dps).
I never tried another class as I wrecked the game on my first try xD

The amount of passion that the traditional roguelike genre inspires in its most dedicated fans is kind of astounding. Passion project games that eventually get a commercial release agent unique to this type of game, of course, but it just seems to me that the people behind this game, Dwarf Fortress, Unreal World, etc are incredibly driven by their desire to make really cool and extremely intricate games, and they spend a lifetime doing so.

I got into playing true roguelikes a couple years ago, and I really quite like them. A game like ToME is the pinnacle of RPG design, in my eyes: it focuses entirely on customizing your character, and fighting enemies using that character’s specific strengths, weaknesses, and playstyle. Story/narrative takes a backseat and is replaced with procedural generation to make the gameplay experience even more varied and interesting.
It’s one of those types of games that I can keep in my library for a long time, and I could always go back to and find something new to do in it. I love games like that; there’s something oddly satisfying about knowing that you’ve never seen or done everything. (And it’s probably the source of my struggle to finish games, too.)

Aaaah fun to see you covering my favorite game, All hail the dark god!
But seriously though, there is just an endless amount of possibilities in this game to customize your character, entire runs are always different depending on what you find and what you get from certain encounters.
One example of how complex the game is: Turns are used in percentages, you can have more movement speed than your opponents and thus maybe move twice after 10 turns if you have 110% movespeed. Now archers or mages throw or shoot stuff at you. Even these spells and arrows have speed. If you have enough movement speed through for example a spell, rune or the rush skill for example, you can just dodge these spells and arrows! The same is true with skill speed, some skills are actually increase your overall speed so that you can attack twice a turn, or for example a lot of infusions don't have any use time so you can combo your defensive infusions and skills together!
And this is just one little thing about the game! so yes it does have quite a learning curve but damn is it rewarding when you learn all these things!
So far I've yet to beat the game with around 600 hours into it haha... Furthest I've gotten is the boss before the last one. So that says enough about the roguelike qualities it has.
That character was even able to defeat the "SUPER OVERPOWERED HYDRA" room... I've got no idea how I couldn't complete the game with it.
This game has the ability to just checkmate you in every encounter it does not matter how strong your character is, you have to really look at an encounter and say to yourselve "I will die, RUN!!!" and just come back later or take the hit and run strategy.

This game is insane. Not for the feint of heart. You will die. You will die a lot. You will keep coming back. You will get better every time you die. You will feel robbed every time you die. (unless you get pissed at something and die on purpose early-game.)

Do you remember when it was Tales of Middle Earth? It was a massive overhaul of a roguelike called angband, which was derived from a predecessor called moria. Gets muddy then but rogue and nethack are all in its DNA.

THE quintessential trad roguelike. The "Witcher 3" of trad roguelikes. aint nobody does it better, than Dark God himself.

Depth first; pick a path and stick to it. If it doesn't work; try another path. Also; play the tutorial so you get an understanding of the fundamental mechanics.

Been playing this one also since it was on a website! Love it, so glad SC finally got around to is. There is an older version still available for free on Dark God's website. This game is Great. Extremely dense, but great. I've put some 400hrs into it and still pick it up every now and again. In fact, think I'll go start a run...

    • @DarkVeghetta
      @DarkVeghetta 2 роки тому

Base TOME is still completely free.
There are two expansions that you can choose to pay for (donation-based DLC, basically) that add this and that to the game, plus there's the vault that essentially lets you send your alts gear once they're at a certain point in the game, but the base game is and has always been free.
On Steam it has a price tag, but that starts you off with... I think the DLC unlocked off the bat, if I'm not mistaken (I don't use Steam, so I only have vague memories of such from years ago when I got curious).

He did. I remember the video - if I'm not mistaken, he was playing an archer (or slinger?) and at some point he was in Norgos' Lair. Might have ended up fighting Wrathroot as well.

It has always amused me how the quests where you have to protect some dude in this game have the NPC just beeline directly for the teleport no matter what you're doing. Like, they'll run directly into enemies, completely abandon you, etc. It's quite easy for the NPC to get themselves killed with little you can do to stop them, so it's actually kind of justified you get great rewards for that.

To tell the truth what you showed here looks interesting and I think I'm not the only one that likes this type of old school graphic.
But holly cow 1782 achievements?! - I try to be a completionist when I can but that would mean a few years of playing only this game... hm... I think I need to get this as my body is ready!

Hard to see sometimes, but it is a different shade of grey. Hell, there are abilities that do just that - Archmage has access to two of them - Illuminate (Phantasm category) and Vision (Divination category). Vision's available through escorts as well, if it's an actual issue for you.
Mind the starting Archmage zone though - that boss is a killer (you can say no to it, but it drops good - pick your poison).
