      She knows she isn’t going to win at all. She managed to have a great life by willingly taking the divorce. Henry wrote her off as ugly to explain the divorce, but the real reason was that she wasn’t forbidden fruit and he wasn’t transgressing by getting with her.

    • @BrandonVout
      @BrandonVout 16 днів тому +17

      @@annekeener4119It wasn't politically necessary to stay married to her anymore. They married because France and the HRE stopped fighting each other and Henry needed Protestant allies in case they decided to team up and overthrow him. Once they started fighting again, Anne's brother wasn't needed anymore.
      She also wasn't his type. Henry preferred educated women who could advise him, while there was a large education gap between English and German noblewomen. Henry also preferred thinner, boyish women, while Anne's figure was more mature. English observers also found her German wardrobe unflattering. Witness accounts offer more praise to her beauty once she adopted an English wardrobe.

    u probably heard from others on patron, but the line is "ignore the Fear and you'll be Fine, we'll turn this Vier (four) into a nine" playing on the rhymes of German words vier (four) and nein (no) with fear and nine.
    the whole numbers thing also comes from the idea of eating someones attractiveness on a scale of 1 to 10. so basically they're gonna turn her from so so average (4) to really attractive (9). this also plays more on the idea that she "tricked" Henry the viii by not looking like her portrait (a big reason on why he decided to marry her)

    • @CinnaScone
      @CinnaScone 16 днів тому +15

      I was coming down to the comments to post basically this, not gonna lie. The only thing I would add is that the line is immediately followed by "So just say Ja (yes) and don't say Nein (no)" to lampshade that nine/nein confusion that Casper had.

    regarding switching accents: the entire show is performed only by the 6 Queens. So if there are other characters, such as the Holbein staff, it's still the Queens actresses. For Holbein, they have sunglasses and neck ruffs to differentiate from their Queen role. The random bursts of British are more like side notes, being interjected from a 3rd POV.
    Also, high heels did exist! They were pretty different, more blocky. They actually originated as men's fashion, intended to make it easier to keep feet in stirrups while riding horses.

    • @cojec
      @cojec 15 днів тому

      Oh woah really? I assumed it was because being tall was considered to be more masculine, so heels were supposed to accentuate that.

    Fun fact as a fellow dane but Christina of Denmark wasn't turned down, she turned Henry down. She turned him down, saying she would be happy to marry the king if she had had two heads: "If I had two heads, one should be at the King of England's disposal.”

    In a way, the two Annes became victors in two different ways, Boleyn died so her daughter would keep her claim, said daughter, becoming the virgin queen and last Tudor, the line went with her after Henry tried so hard for sons, and Cleves out lived him, had a good life and she became friends with him, he viewed her as a sister after some time

  • @KSClaw

    Fun fact, Christina of Denmark was frikkin' savage when rejecting Henry. She supposedly said ""If I had two heads, one should be at the King of England's disposal."" She also wore black mourning clothes for her portrait that Hans Holbein painted of her (I think this was because it wasn't that long after Jane Seymore died. Jane passed away in 1537, Hans Holbein arrived in Brussels where Christina was at in March 1538).

    Historical explanation behind Anne of Cleves.
    Anne was the daughter to a Duchy within the Holy Roman Empire (Germany).
    Hans Holbein (Haus of Holbein) was a close artist to Henry, he drew art of almost everyone within the family, including all of his wives, his children etc. Henry believed his art to be authentic and replicated their likeness very well.
    Henry saw the piece of Anne of Cleves (after Hans left to the Holy Roman Empire for a bit and drew the portrait of Anne Cleves and her sister Amalie) and thought she was absolutely beautiful and wanted her to be his wife. He wanted to surprise his new found wife by suddenly kissing her and embracing her before introducing himself to her. Thinking that she would swoon like he was some dashing prince, but she did not in fact have that certain reaction. She was not interested at all, until it being revealed he was the King of England. Even then however she was still not very interested, always looking withdrawn and looking outside the window.
    Henry was upset by this obviously, but claimed that it was the fact that he was "catfished," that she wasn't as beautiful as the art depicted. Though many believe that was just him more upset that she wasn't very interested, as she was described as being very beautiful and "lovely of the face." Which lead to a unconsummated marriage and 6 months of lovelessness.
    Henry could not do anything to Anne, he was already in hot water with the church after Anne Boleyn, and England wasn't doing very well economically. Henry couldn't gain the ire of one of the bigger empires of the time, the Holy Roman Empire, which is where she was from. So instead, she was given an estate by the King where in which she could lavishly until the end of her days. I believe she got the nickname "Sister of the King." Either way, she lived and died happily.

    Heals were originally worn by men, they were useful to secure your foothold in stirrups when riding, specifically in combat situations like mounted archery where both hands are occupied. They also improved a man’s stature and helped him look more imposing. (Though I understand at 6’2” Henry viii didn’t need any help and probably wouldn’t have warn them himself except perhaps when riding) they were impractical footwear for city streets/regular use which made them an excellent status symbol for the wealthy.
    The first recorded instance of a woman wearing heals was Catherine de Medici who wore them to her wedding in 1533 (possibly hoping to look older than her 14 years.) That’s 7 years before Anne’s wedding. Mary Tudor (Henry and Catherine of Aragon’s daughter) was known to wear heals during her 5 year Reign as well.

    Yeah, pretty much everyone agrees that Anna of Cleeves got out of there in the best way she could have. The main reason Henry didn't do with her what he did with Anne Boleyn, is her lineage. If he had beheaded her on some trumpet up charges to get rid of her, He might have risked war with the HRE, which was _not_ something that was worth a dead wife, so, instead, he payed her out, set her up and said "Pretty please write all your german relatives that you are being treated very nice, yes?"

    in 'House of Holbein' they mean the number four(vier) and nine (9) in these lines, like if you are rating people and than they get a makeover and look 'better'. And true we don't use 'wunderbar' very often, more 'wundervoll' (wonderful) or 'großartig' (great).
    and in this line: 'so just say ja (yes) and don't say nein (no)'.
    'Das ist gut' is that is good.

    You just got so Danish as soon as they said Christina of Denmark, singing "Der er et yndigt land" and waving your flag. As a fellow Dane I began laughing so hard, it is really rare to see Denmark mentioned in anything.
    Some say that Christina of Denmark actually said that she would marry Henry VIII if she had two heads.

    I should answer the question that the split of gendered heels happened in the 1600s as the enlightenment changed men's fashion even further towards utility rather than vanity, before then it was a sign of a cavalryman.
