With a little knowledge this one is a super quick fix. I would recommend having a helper when pulling the new bottom seal through the channels which will make things a lot easier.

Another tip is to fold the extra few inches of weather stripping at each end and tuck them back inside the channel. This will prevent you from having to use screws to keep it in place as well as serve as extra stripping if it ever shrinks!

I called a garage repair company to get a estimate and it was going to be $121.00 for trip charge, labor, and rubber seal. I believe I can change the seal myself. Thanks for the video.

Actually that might not have been such a bad deal.
the key here is that the seal that Scott was using was apparently a vinyl one and they were going to use a rubber one.
you're much better off going with a good quality Rubber seal any day

That's cheap for what the work is and how annoying it is to get through the channel.

Over time the bow for the vinyl will collapse from being in contact with the floor when the door is closed. A good solution is to cut a long piece of old hose and thread it into the bow all the way across the door. It will keep the vinyl shape and provide a longer lasting bottom seal.

My Wayne Dalton seal (w/ round bead) was an absolute bear to replace due to resistance in the channels. I had to spray it down with liberal amounts of fluid film to get the seal to slide through.

Whenever I have to 'thread' something; screen seals, bike handles etc, I spray soap and water in forward direction and on material; really helps.

I really liked your idea about a "one-man" operation. I work alone in my home fabrication shop and I have had to design many assists like you demonstrated to be able to work without assistance. Up here in northern Wisconsin, on Lake superior, I always spray the bottom of my garage door seal with silicone so it does not get frozen to the concrete surface. That saves your seal and the nylon gear system in your garage door opener from trying to pull a frozen door.. Now, if you could just tell me how to keep those darn rodents from chewing on my garage door seal. I'm going to try to butter the outside edges of the seal with some Asian fire oil this winter.

The clamps holding up the seal is a game changer! Thank you for that! This is the content I come to UA-cam for!

Did you end up having to use the 2 screws to hold it in place? Did it make it through the winter ok? I'm also in the Midwest (Illinois, Chicago) and am curious how important it is to use the 2 screws.

Nope, just bent the channel in slightly at each end. Made it through the winter with no problem and no shifting. Best of luck 👍

Great info! Our garage stop seal does not run end to end. The installer left out like three inches on each side with no seal. The seal needs to seal the entire bottom correct?

Do you have any ideas for a one man installation with no second overhead door? Our garage only has the one 16 foot overhead?

How did you know to select 2.5”? Is that the distance between each track?

    • @knagl
      @knagl 2 роки тому +2

Measure the width of the seal that you currently have and match that. It will be a larger number than the distance between the tracks since it will be installed in a "U" shape as part of the width.

Any videos on how to insulate around the edges of the door? I have a pretty big gap between the frame and the door
