    I was operating under Part 107 hovering at around 300 feet taking pictures for a client. Out of nowhere a plane came just above the trees right into my area. It was a crop duster flying low. He came through so fast that I couldn’t tell if he above me or below me. He was not broadcasting ADSB. It definitely scared me because there was nothing I could do. After he passed by, I landed and ended that flight.

      Airplanes/choppers can drag their gear on the ground so long as they are rural and at least 500 away from someone's property. He worded that response less accurately than he should have.
      Out in the desert, over the grasslands or Everglades, over a lake or ocean, people fly right on the surface.

    This is why I always fly with my Anti Collision lights turned on because there is a better chance that a helicopter 🚁 or other aircraft will see me because of the AC Light

    All good info, Greg. I live in acreage (farm) and one of my biggest concerns is that in these agricultural areas, there are often low flying crop dusters zipping around. They’re pretty noisy, but can quickly come out of nowhere.

    I fly regularly in Red Rock Canyon in Nevada. (It's a National Conservation Area, not a National Park, and the administration of the area explicitly allows drones everywhere in the area other than the designated wilderness areas). You must constantly look out for helicopters and for small planes. Search and Rescue helicopters may be flying at any altitude, anytime, anywhere. Those can be life or death situations, and you must not interfere by flying your drone nearby.

    Hey Greg, I've been watching you for years now. I always enjoy your videos and information. Now, I do have a drone with strobes. However, I found that sometimes when I look down at my controller and look back up, especially on "gray" days, that I would sometimes lose VLOS. However, the strobes did help me to find it quickly so I could continue my flight safely. These were not used to see how far I could fly, but more for being able to locate it again quickly. Let's face it, we all lose sight at some time when we take our eyes of the actual drone (like framing shot or checking movement for a scene). It happens all to quickly. Oh, and I love having ADSB. It gives you plenty of warning to get out to the way.

    There are now hundreds of thousands of UAVs out there flying and most are flown by people who don't know all this math. So, with that understood, how many planes have been downed by drones so far? How many deaths have been attributed to consumer drones used for normal consumer activities?

      Have you seen the alleged "expensive damage" some of the full size aircraft have taken? Hardly a scratch.
      I cant fathom the damage my 249g toy would do to a crop duster or coast guard chopper, oh the humanity

    I live on the Oregon coast adjacent to a five mile long expanse of beach between two capes. Small aircraft fly high owing to the cape headlands. However, USCG helicopters fly low just off the shoreline and can appear at any time. Its always good to scan the sky between the capes looking for these aircraft [fortunately, they are big and quite noisy].

    The local sheriffs office likes to fly over my home about once a week and checking his ads-b I noticed he's always at around 400ft agl. So Anytime I'm flying and I hear that rotor chop I immediately take any needed actions. IMO Actually very irresponsible of them to fly like that above populated areas, but I digress. Also, as a PPL I can say that even regular aircraft are difficult to attain visually. So I never believe my drone is visible to other aircraft.

    I always enjoy your videos and am almost ready to take my part 107 test, thanks to your course. One disappointment I have with this video and everyone who discusses "see and avoid." They never talk about how your other senses increase your ability to see and avoid. You don't have to be Radar O'Reilly to hear a plane or helicopter from several miles away. Unless you are flying from a very noisy location, you can hear a manned aircraft long before you can see it.

      That’s a misconception. Helicopters sounds, specifically, will echo all around any reflective areas, making it impossible to find where it is coming from. Because you can hear it doesn’t mean you know where it’s coming from!

    Know your surroundings and don't fly like a moron and you'll be fine. I live in an area that isn't controlled airspace, but I'm near a flight path for 2 airports and a minor league baseball stadium. Planes pulling signs fly around here all summer. There's also a few hospitals with helicopter landing pads. And some military aircraft do training right over my house, lol. I know these things, and make sure I avoid bad situations.

    A cigar? Really?
    Another myth: ADS-B lets me see all other aircraft. Honestly it doesn't show you most of the aircraft that you need to watch out for in my experience. It's only required on aircraft that enter controlled airspace so things like crop dusters and small personal aircraft that typically fly lower than the big boys are the ones that lack ADS-B. Also most military aircraft, although I've seen some that actually do transmit ADS-B. Most of my flying is outside of controlled airspace.

      and even then it's not a good idea to assume they are transmitting ADS-B Out inside controlled airspace since Law Enforcement and Military can easily get approval from ATC to turn ADS-B Out off (so the bad guys can't track them as easily).

    Thanks for putting it out there about helicopters. I have seen way too many posts where someone thinks they should not be flying so low. But that is what Helicopters do!

    Its always critical to have anti collision lights activated at all times because manned aircraft will be able to have a better chance of seeing you than not

    From an aircraft pilots perspective, how much harder is it to detect a drone than a bird? How is a drone a greater risk than a bird?

      Larger birds are ok to see at slow speeds because they usually are catching thermals and therefore you can see their full wing span. Also they are dark, and moving. And most times, they can see planes and move out of the way.

      @@PilotInstitute How many bird strikes are reported every year? How many over the past 60yrs have resulted in the permanent injury or death of occupants of manned aircraft? Once you have that answer, ask the same exact questions for RC aircraft instead of birds. You will find that birds are MANY, MANY times more dangerous to manned aircraft than RC aircraft.

      birds are soft and squishy. Drones are hard plastic and metal and often blend into the background. Rotor blades and plexiglass windscreens are expensive.

      It would depend on the size of the drone and the bird and the coloring and the background and movement of the drone.
      Birds generally don't hover and do flap their wings so that's one advantage in seeing them

    Also an important note in area's with helicopter flight training off airport lanings are going to be practiced a lot so their going be very low doing recon on a spot before coming in to land at it.

    I see helicopters regularly when flying in the San Francisco area, both in the city and along the coastlines with the coastguard activity. The notifications of "manned aircraft nearby" are typically spot on but you can always spot them visually as well. Without question I always drop like a rock and ceded the airspace and when in low light have my strobe nice and visible, want to stick out like a sore thumb to them.

    VLOS is a "Catch 22" rule (regulation). Very hard if not impossible to prove.. just like the strength of headlights, illumination distance, is my eyesight worse than yours????? N0.1 rule - Above All Others... "Common Sense" !

      Yes! Common sense indeed!
      And BVLOS in unobstructed environments is usually not the issue but it’s easy to prove BVLOS when building and obstructions are present or when going several miles away.

    I have a question. Recently I was camping in Daytona Beach, Florida within 100 yards of the helicopter operation that hit a drone not too long ago. I wanted to ascend my Mini 4 to 40 or 50 feet to film the campground. I wasn't in the helicopter flight path, the FAA allowed flights to 50' for which I received approval, but the DJI app wouldn't let the drone fly.
    How could I have overcome this restriction? Any ideas?

      If it is not a grey area, request a custom unlock or perform a self unlock. If it is a grey (restricted) area: you will not be able to fly; you would have to get a drone without built-in restrictions.

    I was flying my drone above my house landing it for some reason I don’t recall! Looked up and 4 military helicopters flew right above the tree line right where I was flying! They never came across my screen as approaching aircraft! I did not hear them nor see them till it would been to late! But wow it was awesome to see them! They came back around at dusk time it was so wild! To watch them come in so fast circle the lake bam they were gone! Our armed forces are the best

    Military jets routinely engage in low altitude training and sometimes "low altitude" means carrying home bits of vegetation with them.

    A drone operator will most likeley have the advantage of sound and maybe reducing the the 12 second rule.

      Sound from helicopter is VERY deceiving and you may not be able to find out it’s there until it’s too late, depending on the acoustics of the place where you are.

      Regardless of where the sound is coming from, it's most likely going to be a reciprocating engine sound nearby, which should catch the attention of a drone operator. This auditory cue may provide the drone operator with an advantage. My point is that the data appears to be taken from a cockpit. This is a good video and a good reminder of how delayed reactions can cause problems for both types of pilots. However, I don't think the data accurately supports both operations.

    I always get down low if I hear ANY aircraft, no matter their altitude. If they hit my drone, they’re going to hit the ground in a couple seconds anyway. I figure I’ll get blamed for ANY incident no matter what.

      Good on ya! But you won't always hear them coming. Sound waves get reflected in strange ways and wind can also effect the noise from a helicopter away from you. I'm a former helicopter pilot and always amazed at how misleading sound is at low altitude. I can usually tell by the sound what model it is, but always surprised when I look in one direction for it, only to see it appear suddenly from another direction.

    Riddle me this Batman: If a remote pilot is doing an autonomous flight for a survey (Photogrammetry) and it is a large area, and the pilot loses VLOS ,how does the pilot maintain VLOS?Visual Observers? Or do they apply for a BVLOS waiver?(Which I realize takes a certain amount of time to obtain) Unfortunately I have seen this first hand. The pilot was apathetic about it when I asked them about flying BVLOS without a waiver. They said they "do it all the time".

    I've become aware that general aviation in the US leads to over a hundred lifes lost and millions of dollars in damages each year. Commercial aviation is many times that. Automobile use is well, crazy numbers as are fire arms. So, talking about drone saftey is just such a tini-tiny issue, I feel I'm wasting my time, where as when you talk about improving my flight skills, my photographic skills, my battery skills, product knowledge, just anything but safety; all are a beter use of my time.

      You are correct. As an social epidemiologist, the risk of injury and damage from a drone is extremely low, as you compared them to other aircraft categories and motor vehicles. But a minor dent by a drone on an aircraft can mean huge costs and months waiting for repairs and loss of service for any aircraft.

      The Flight Safety Foundation's Aviation Safety Network's WORLD WIDE Drone Database contains over 9200 reports of unmanned aircraft (UAS) sightings from pilots and airprox occurrences involving UAS and aircraft. The database contains the 25 descriptions of suspected and confirmed drone collisions with aircraft. 5 with no damage and 2 with substantial. No personal injury.
      The FAA has over 970,000 registered UAS. Probably over 10 millions flights a year done by over a million pilots.
      Now, how many fewer incidents, how much lower damage would there be if a million pilots took 15 minutes for safety reminders? That's 250,000 hours!
      I think there are better ways to invest in UAS pilot education.

    All of these rules really make it impossible to enjoy this hobby. my 249g toy doesnt seem worth it if some asshat in a massive helicopter can destoy my toy and cost me thousands of dollars over a scratch.

    All aircraft should be required to transmit ADS-B. That includes paramotors, ultralights, and hang gliders. All mass-produced drones should be required to receive ADS-B like my avata. But the FAA isn't known for its intelligence or safety

      Agreed. It’s a rather easy thing to do with current tech. Military aircraft would be an issue though since they don’t broadcast to civilians.

      We quoted the regulation for you to read. It is what it says there. They can definitely fly very low if needed, and certainly below 400 feet.

      @@PilotInstitute Have you read 91.119? It doesn't really explain this. It seems to just refer to other regulations. I guess it is easier to vaguely myth bust than to actually know the exact regs. I thought your goal was to bring clarity though.

      91.119 is vague on purpose. "A helicopter may be operated at less than the minimums prescribed in paragraph (b) or (c) of this section, provided each person operating the helicopter complies with any routes or altitudes specifically prescribed for helicopters by the FAA". Paragraph (b) is "Over congested areas" aka the 1000'ft rule and (c) is "Over other than congested areas" aka the 500 ft rule.
      In short, helicopters can fly below 500 feet at any time if it's approved by the FAA, meaning that, as we said in the video, you should expect them to fly low at all times, especially near heliports, which happen to not all be charted by the FAA on pilot charts.

    Bull, flown helicopters 45+ years. See Pt 91, 133 external load operations from 0 to 300 ft average, same for aerial application
    Drones are often flown beyond safe limits, over 200 ft and out of line of sight. And I have repaired both helicopter and fixed wing aircraft, Drones are a pest,

      500 ft limit on helicopters?. Pt 133 and aerial application are NOE often over congested areas - Not to mention public service air ambulance confined area landings with SAR = A helicopter operates in a very different envelope then the FARs you listed🤪 @@PilotInstitute 😁 Birds are bad enough , recreational drones are a hazard...☠☠☠

    What bothers me is people who say my drone can go 4miles 6 miles when my drone gets so small I can't barely see it at 120 feet altitude maybe 200 feet away I have a hard time seeing it ...
