Great video Jaret. This is my first season coaching high school sprinters and hurdlers. The information you provide is extremely helpful. Thanks and keep up the good work! --J
I feel like my trail leg is delayed, I have a video on my channel of my final 4 hurdles in the 300mH and my trainer told me to slow down my running to not delay my trail leg but I still feel like its delayed
Hey jaret! Thanks you so much for posting such awesome and useful videos! I especially love the warmup and sprint workout videos. I was wondering if you can post a video on how to workout and improve times for the 400 meter. Because of your videos my time dropped from a 56 to a 54 in two weeks and I hope to hit at least 52 by June! :) (junior in high school)
+Bob Lee hell yeah man! Love to hear that. Its amazing what a good race plan can do for you and just understanding how to run races can go a long way. There are a ton of different videos I can make on 400 meter workouts so I will definitely add that to the list. Stay tuned!
Abs! Core muscles control your posture with all movements...running, walking, lifting. And keeping your body as square in your head, which will keep the body. Body follows the mind. in my humbled, not a coaches, not a pro runner's opinion. just a training nut.
Hey Jaret,I'm a sophomore in San Diego doing mainly the same events you talk about but I was wondering if you could make a triple jump video please, I would really appreciate it
Take 8 or 7 steps to the first hurdle, if you have a long stride take 7 if you have a normal stride length start with 8. Although I suggest starting with 8 steps because 7 is hard to start off. It depends on what your stride length is. and start with your right leg with crouch or standing start. In between the hurdles you take 3 strides. And that's it
+Shannon adan Its a combination of a few things. First, take some video of yourself and make sure you're not going too high over the hurdle. The less time you spend in the air, the better off you'll be. Also, your arms play a big part in this. So make sure you are leading with your opposite arm and driving your other one back to help keep you balanced.
+Annas Odd Room practice these drills over and over and over again until you ingrain it into your head and muscle memory...as long as you do them correctly it will eventually adjust. Just takes time.
My P.R is only 18:97 right now for 110m, hopefully I can get under 18 next year and also I can only 4 steps as of now. I need to work on getting faster so I can 3 steps. I also have districts next week so this will definitely help me-thx
+negativeflow01 start practicing every drill with both legs like I mention in all the hurdle videos. Start easy with just doing the step over drills, trail leg drills, etc. and then as get better start incorporating other drills until you feel more comfortable to start jogging over them and then work up to race speed. Just takes time.
+Roger Do0dger haha yeah its the flyknit racer oreo you are correct...they look really cool but they aren't actually my favorite for running. I think the pegasus are better as far as support and shit
Hi jaret I was wondering if you had any tips on how to maintain speed and when I jump over the hurdle I look like a airplane and my coach always get mad because of the arms any drills or tips to fix that problem.
+Soccer skills Rex maintaining speed is just about running efficiently and being in good shape. You can check out some of my 400 meter workouts for that. As for "airplane arms" you just need to practice good arm action during your hurdle drills as I show in my hurdle videos.
Hey Jaret, I'm a sophomore and attack the first hurdle with 7 strides I won my first hurdle race this season using this but is that okay for a guy with short legs like mine?
+chris1990ish1 Whatever gets you to the first hurdle on your good leg and the fastest possible where you don't have to chop steps or slow down then thats how many steps you want to take.
+Noe Beltran Hey buddy! I've got two great videos on my channel that would be very helpful for you as a 100 meter runner. How to run fasterua-cam.com/video/ZOncyxOfwhIA/v-deo.htmlnd a speed/acceleration workoutua-cam.com/video/cTUYvFCuV7kI/v-deo.html've also got a "Track and Field" playlist if you scroll down on my main page where you can find other videos related to track and field.
Been watching the sprinting videos, thanks for tips and workouts! Realized I've been using my blocks wrong for 5 years because of the length and that I never put force into my back foot when starting. Also, can you make a video explaining lactic acid or something? I don't really get the understanding of it . Woooo
Happy to hear that have been helpful for ya! I'll add the lactic acid video to the list. But I can tell you the basics right now. Lactic acid is something that builds up in your muscles when you do demanding exercise activities. Your body using oxygen along with other things to help process it and flush it out but depending on how in shape you are and how hard you push your body, eventually the lactic acid build up in your muscles causes you to slow down when running or training in the gym. It's a normal process that everyone deals with. As you train your body gets better at clearing it out and you are able to run longer for faster as you get in better shape etc.
+Bryanna Johnston that's actually a very tough question to answer as it depends on how fast you're running, how tall you are, how flexible etc...its actually so complex its not something I even bring up to my athletes. I'd say for now, don't worry so much about that. The most important thing is to take the hurdles in stride and to get over top the hurdle and down to the other side as quickly and easily as you can :)
Flexibility is very important. I did static stretching after every practice to make sure my muscles has plenty of flexibility. The more flexible your muscles the lower your chance of injury.
+Ali Ejaz What up man! Thats a legit 200 meter time man. Great job. My PR was right around there in the 200 as well and I always wanted to break into those 20. numbers. On the track you would want to focus on speed and speed endurance workouts. I've got a speed/acceleration workout here: ua-cam.com/video/cTUYvFCuV7k/v-deo.html I've also got a bunch of leg training videos that would absolutely benefit you on the the track as well. Just click on the "muscle building playlist" on my channel and you'll find some great training videos. The stronger you can get in the gym, the faster you will go on the track. Its that simple. I'll be doing more speed videos in the future. I've also got a video explaining how to run faster, which could be helpful for you as well. ua-cam.com/video/ZOncyxOfwhI/v-deo.html
Thanks so much Jaret. I will be looking at those videos. Ever since I have subscribed to your UA-cam, I've seen most of your videos and they definitely helped me out. Today I did your chest, shoulders a d tris workout for hypertrophy. I will be staying up with your videos. They are helping me out, as I am also training for the olympic trials.
+Ali Ejaz right on man, happy to hear that! And hell yeah, good luck with the trails. Make sure you are keeping your diet on point as well. That is one of the most important things that I did not take seriously in college when I was training that can really give you an edge. I've got a section on nutrition on my website, you should def read it over to make sure you're getting what you need to fuel your workouts and recovery. www.jcampfit.com/nutrition
jaret do you think I should alternate my trail and lead legs on each hurdle? I'm a freshman in high school and everytime I try to 3 step a hurdle I always stutter step because i didn't cover enough ground for the 3 step. I run varsity 100m and 300m hurdles cause we don't have enough guys (only 4) and I feel like the slowest one since I'm usually always last. I was thinking approaching hurdles differently with alternating legs but what do you think is best for me?
+Gray Fullbuster If you can't three step, then absolutely go to 4. My girl actually 4 stepped some pretty fast times in the 100 meter hurdles. I'd say try it out and see if its faster...my guess is that it will be. Track is about doing whatever makes you get to the finish line the fastest so don't get caught up in 3 stepping. And don't worry about being last. Focus on doing your best and enjoy being in great shape and working towards getting better every day. Keep up the good work. Lots more videos coming.
Hej Jeret! Got a new sub, love ur content! I have a question tho. When you talk about being as light but strong as possible, is that achieved by doing low reps of high weight? Im looking to be faster at the 100. Thanks man!
+SebT 00 Welcome to the team buddy! When it comes to lifting for strength you normally want to be in the lower rep ranges, 2-6 reps per set range. However, your size is really determined by your calorie intake. You can still train in higher reps but as long as you're not eating in a surplus then you won't gain size.
I run the 300m hurdles and it's super hard for me to use my right leg as my lead leg, so I'm always stutter stepping so I can get over with my left as lead, what can I do to be more comfortable using both legs?? :/ great vid btw
+melchezidek lavulo Start practicing using both legs during all of your drills and work up to being able to jog over the hurdles and eventually start running and work up to race pace. Just takes time. Also, having a race plan will help so you know when you'll be coming up on your opposite leg so its not as scary when it happens.
If you really don't want to switch legs, I recommend taking larger steps to get the correct lead leg instead of stutter stepping, It works really well for me.
+Jake Martin yes that is an option too...its still not ideal but it does work. I've got a new 300 hurdle video coming out soon that will also address this issue and talk about how to fix it.
+Jaret Campisi Yess thank you please do! I don't really have a good rhythm when running the 300, but I've been practicing with my right leg and it's been working out okay, so thanks!
+Savannah Bailey haha oh man thats a tough question...right now the top time in the country for womens is 41 ish...but I think a solid time would be pretty much anything under 49 sec...
Im in HS and my 300m hurdle time is 54seconds, my stutter step is killing me but even when I run a 300m with no hurdles its only 50 at best. I really want to break 50 for the hurdles by the end of the season, do you have any advice for me? thanks
+trainingattack Hey buddy, happy to help. First off, you need to STOP STUTTERING. You should watch my 300 meter hurdle video on how to help that and the types of drills you should be doing on your tech days in order to get better. Second, you need to get in better shape. As a 300 meter hurdler you should be training like a 400 meter runner. I've got a video on 400 meter training that you should check out which includes a sample workout you should be doing at least once a week. I'll be including lots more videos as well so stay tuned.
this is incorrect information lol. And the wall drill is being shown incorrectly. Your lead leg should not be lined up with the hurdle, to do the trail leg drill. Your lead leg should be a step in front and athlete should be in a slight drive phase position (hands on the wall) to get a full reality of working the trail leg wall drill.
Thor Odinson I don’t think you are in a position to comment about the drill. Those times that you quoted are pathetic and wouldn’t win any race of significance. Please leave the commenting to someone that knows about hurdling.
Jack Showalter sprint hard too I'm telling you man if you just push you will hit this mental wall and you won't be able to go any faster but if you think you can you can break that wall and you will stop being able to see your lungs won't breath and it's beautiful everything leaves your mind
WHAT?? I'm sorry man but that is not how your trail leg should look like, show this video to any track coach they'll tell you... or just simply watch how hurdlers do it in the olympics
Yeah that’s what I was thinking, what he’s saying that you should be doing with it is the problem I have, lol that’s what I’m do when my form messes up
Great video and great tips. Sadly, I was watching this with my 11 year old daughter. The humor isn't what I wished for her. But we surely will be working on the drills.
I am learning hurdling with her as we go. So trainers like you that offer us help online have been a game-changers. Seriously, I didn't want to put a negative spin on a great tutorial! There are things she has been doing that you pointed out are "not the best" way to go, and hopefully she will be a better runner for it. Thanks again!
+Abi Early I always practice it this way but when you do things full speed, everything tends to stretch out a little and yes your trail leg will end up a little sideways but that's not a position of power for our leg to be in. So it will not help you drive the trail leg up or back down on the opposite side of the hurdle. So these drills are to teach people how to do it correctly even though things do change slightly when you're going full speed.
The trail leg is at the side going full speed, if it wasn't your foot would get caught. He's showing the proper pull through so you can get the push off the hurdle. When standing it may not look like it's at your side, but when your going fast your leg will automatically pull through at the side like that. But in order for that to happen you need to be able to pull your leg through correctly.
Great video Jaret. This is my first season coaching high school sprinters and hurdlers. The information you provide is extremely helpful. Thanks and keep up the good work! --J
How do you reduce time in the air
I feel like my trail leg is delayed, I have a video on my channel of my final 4 hurdles in the 300mH and my trainer told me to slow down my running to not delay my trail leg but I still feel like its delayed
I have districts next week and I'll be running 300 hurdles. Thanks for the hurdling vids
+Sandro Rivera You're welcome. Lots more to come! And good luck!
Ur track videos help me a lot thanks 👍
The Hurdles a lot. I got 49.00 for my 300m hurdles and ur videos helped me out thxs

Awesome video, great drills!
Hello flexibilty of lead leg routine for harmstring to restrict harmsteing strain ,plz make a vidoe on it ?
Do you have any tips to improve posture while hurdling
Abs! Core muscles control your posture with all movements...running, walking, lifting. And keeping your body as square in your head, which will keep the body. Body follows the mind. in my humbled, not a coaches, not a pro runner's opinion. just a training nut.
Hey Jaret,I'm a sophomore in San Diego doing mainly the same events you talk about but I was wondering if you could make a triple jump video please, I would really appreciate it
+alex bautista I will add it to the list for sure...are the specific things you have trouble with or just want to know some drills for the event etc?
+Jaret Campisi it's mainly transitioning from the first phase into the second phase that Is giving me problems
i stutter step when i do my hurdles my dominate is my left so what do i do?
Take 8 or 7 steps to the first hurdle, if you have a long stride take 7 if you have a normal stride length start with 8. Although I suggest starting with 8 steps because 7 is hard to start off. It depends on what your stride length is. and start with your right leg with crouch or standing start. In between the hurdles you take 3 strides. And that's it

Your videos are great! Thank you for doing all of these!
+Bethenny Gravelle haha right on, thanks Beth. So happy to hear they are helpful :) Lots more to come so stay tuned!
How do u keep ur balance when ur actually in the air over the hurdle. And it's hard for me to snap it back that's what I'm struggling on in hurdles
+Shannon adan Its a combination of a few things. First, take some video of yourself and make sure you're not going too high over the hurdle. my trail leg doesnt go to the side its always up like im jumping instead of hurdling :(
+Annas Odd Room practice these drills over and over and over again until you ingrain it into your head and muscle memory...as long as you do them correctly it will eventually adjust. Just takes time.
if you hurdle with a straight leg instead of this way, how much time do you think you could drop?
My P.R is only 18:97 right now for 110m, hopefully I can get under 18 next year and also I can only 4 steps as of now. I need to work on getting faster so I can 3 steps. I also have districts next week so this will definitely help me-thx
What do you recommend when alternatin? I just can't alternate is their anything that can help me?

Hey I really like the shoes you have on, is it the Pegasus?
its the Nike Flyknit Racer oreo
+Roger Do0dger haha yeah its the flyknit racer oreo you are correct...they look really cool but they aren't actually my favorite for running. I think the pegasus are better as far as support and shit
+Jaret Campisi ok thanks for the suggestion :)
You should have more subs, I'll be sharing your vids with all of my track teammates
thanks I really appreciate that!

+Bryanna Johnston Happy to hear that! I'll be doing lots more track videos so stay tuned!
+Jaret Campisi no need to ask twice 😊 think you could possibly do vids on knowing how close you should get to the hurdle while going over?

What type of stretching do you recommend to increase your flexibility in your lead leg? Or is flexibility not as important as I think?
Flexibility is very important. I did static stretching after every practice to make sure my muscles has plenty of flexibility. The more flexible your muscles the lower your chance of injury.
Great video man! My high school coach had me doing these when I first started but I always forget how to get it up lol

THIS GUY HAS NO CLUE WHAT HES DOIN😂
factsss

No this drill works I run a 16.53 doing this and my friend runs a 15.88. You can move the foot some and its pretty much the same
Thor Odinson I don’t think you are in a position to comment about the drill. Those times that you quoted are pathetic and wouldn’t win any race of significance. Please leave the commenting to someone that knows about hurdling.
@@mikeroberts8609 lol chill
There's only one kid at my school who beats me by less than a second every time. I'll try this next time and see if I can shave off a second or two.
+Jack Showalter nice good luck man...these will definitely help over time for sure so stick with it!
Jack Showalter sprint hard too I'm telling you man if you just push you will hit this mental wall and you won't be able to go any faster but if you think you can you can break that wall and you will stop being able to see your lungs won't breath and it's beautiful everything leaves your mind
My coach kept me on hurdles cuz I had the 3 steps down naturally
my coach says the opposite for trail leg. i’m confizzled
Tony Whitley haha whoops sorry about that. I've been trying to keep them more kid friendly. 👍
Right on, no worries at all. And yes I wish I had this stuff around when I was running...took me years and years to learn this stuff on my own :)
your foot should be a step in front of the hurdle, you’re making your trail leg go over first by doing it the way you are in the video.
I was going to make the same comment.
"that's what she said" michael scott who
Am hitting 20sec on my 110 LOL sad
Awakened Hydra my PR is 26.4 on 100m it’s sad really. I’m just jogging and jumping smh.
that's rubbish if you don't have your trail leg to the side you will lose speed because your jumping up more than if you have your trail leg sideways!
+Abi Early I always practice it this way but when you do things full speed, everything tends to stretch out a little and yes your trail leg will end up a little sideways but that's not a position of power for our leg to be in. When standing it may not look like it's at your side, but when your going fast your leg will automatically pull through at the side like that. But in order for that to happen you need to be able to pull your leg through correctly.
uh. thats not what a trail leg looks like.
