Ikr. Way back when, everyone knew how to sew, depending on their job.
If you were a sailor, you probably knew how to mend a sail if it had a tear. Men were and are tailors, they make clothes for men and women by sewing. It's a skill, and it's pretty important. It's not a 'girly' thing to sew and people should stop perpetuating that idea. It's just so stupid. 🤦

I barely had enough spare thread to loop it for the knots at the end using 32", so I'd recommend using 36". That I'm using much more thread than the 24" he recommends may be a sign that I'm no expert at doing this, but then, if you were an expert you wouldn't be watching this. Making the knot at the start isn't as easy as he makes it look. It may take a few tries if my experience is anything to go by. Before you pull the needle through each time leave it halfway through and check that it's where you want it. Sliding the needle back so you can try again is easy UNTIL you've pulled it all the way through. Meanwhile if you do use more thread this will mean that the loop you're pulling through with each stitch is considerably longer and more likely to catch around other buttons so more care will have to be taken. Oh and be careful that the needle doesn't unintentionally go through a bit of cloth that wasn't one you should be piercing, that will really mess it up if you don't spot it before you've pulled the needle through. To avoid making a mess try not to snag the ends of the cotton beyond the original knot as you continue. And, yes, holding that needle on top of the button is going to be easier with some buttons than with others. So long as you (use more thread and) don't try to do it as fast as he does before you're practiced this seems like a passable guide.

I'm a woman in my 40s and hardly ever have had to sew on a button, so didn't really know how to do it. This video was VERY helpful thanks!

Rambo didn't get knocked out of a helicopter, he jumped off a cliff to get away from the shooter who was in a helicopter.

Thank you for this video! I was able to sew a button back on a vintage wool coat that had fallen off because of old thread, good as new now

Thanks! One of the buttons on a favorite shirt came off. I've sewn them back on before, but only kind of slipshodded-ly. This one is super visible so I figured I'd better do it properly. Very helpful and clear video.

Son of a tailor here. Impressive. My dad used the term elevator where you use the word shank. Most novices miss this. If so, the button is hard to fasten and can cause the button to indent on the material.

Thanks, just did it. "The" button just popped off my shorts. I have a nice jacket that I want to move the button on, but also wanted a practice run first and got it. Even on my first try, it's nicer than the commercial job which tend to eschew shanks for starters.. I'm pleased.

very informative video, needed to resew a button that popped off and your video help immensely, keep up the good work. This is something I am surprised my parents didn't teach me as it just seems like something everyone should know(not a diss on my parents, they are amazing, this must have just slipped through the cracks)
