Backstitching is the strongest hand sewn stitch you can do. People often are concerned about the strength of hand sewing and honestly regardless of what stitch you use it is much stronger than you think. However, for seams that have stress on them like arm holes, shoulder seams and some body seams a backstitch is an ideal choice. Great hand sewing practice for historical hand sewing and better modern hand sewing technique! Practice along with me to remember what your hands can do!

This is the stitch used before the creation of the sewing machine when clothes were made by hand. It’s a very strong stitch and looks beautiful when done.

I am a long haul trucker, I haul steel and other flatbed commodities so my clothing gets a beating. I don't have room for a sewing machine in the truck so I hand stitch... a lot 😂. I put on music or a show on the TV and just sew up holes, sew patches and I have been known to taper and hem some of my jeans, all with hand stitches.

I appreciate the spoiler. I sifted through the instructions, it looks like a thorough delineation of the backstitch, ideal for beginners, or people honestly wanting to understand the logistics of tidy, controlled precision stitches.
With the narrators soothing voice and slow clear movements, it seems a great thing to watch & listen to as I sew my own way. I will not be surprised if I learn something.

Oh, wow. _Technically,_ I already knew how to backstitch, but keeping my stitch line even and straight has often eluded me. The tip about the tail being halfway between where the needle goes in and comes out just absolutely _blew my mind_ for how much simpler it was than I had expected. I haven't actually tried it out myself yet, but a big preemptive thank you!

As a leftie I'm appreciative of the (RIGHT HANDED) label. When I was first learning I would always hold my fabric the same orientation as everyone else and could not for the life of me figure out why I was struggling so much. Once it hit me that I just had to turn it around I felt so silly. Story of my life though: learning to tie my shoes was a journey.

Remember that in school, we didn't have sewing machines, so, we were all taught the backstitch. We hand stitched blouses, skirts, aprons. Every line of stitching was inspected, must be straight and even, else undo every stitch to redo..
I enjoyed every needle work class...it was like foundation of my sewing background

I have two sewing machines and an overlock. I prefer hand stitching, I find sewing a new pattern by hand helps me feel the design better. Clothing, quilts etc all hand stitching. my Grandmother made countless quilts that won awards each time she placed them at the county fair. Every quilt was pieced and quilted by hand. Great memories learning from her. 💕

I’m a newbie to sewing and this tutorial has been super helpful! I’ll definitely use this stitch technique for all of my projects from now on. I did invest in a decent sewing machine but the noise and the speed gives me the worst sensory overload. Hand sewing is definitely more therapeutic and I feel like I’m in more control when I can directly place the individual stitches. Thank you so much for a great tutorial!

A clear presentation, you must be quite experienced to pick out the essential elements in this way, was impressed with your comment about the thread bisecting the distance between the front and back of the needle. I really enjoy sewing with just a needle and thread, it has become much easier over time, and just finished replacing a zip by hand for the first time, heady business indeed. Haven't looked into the world of historical sewing yet, but can see it must be very interesting. Great video, thanks.
