What if the Russian Empire, rather than sell Alaska to the United States in 1867, following it's defeat in the Crimean War, instead held onto it's sole North American Territory? Why did Russia sell Alaska, and how might this alternate scenario have impacted the later Russo-Japanese War, the Great War, and of course, the Bolshevik Revolution, and subsequent Russian Civil War?

If that was the case, The US would be quicker to retaliate with nukes since its marginally closer to US soil than Cuba. The threat being next door like that would make America waayyy more paranoid than Current History.
More paranoid = more likely to hit the button
Edit: not to mention what Britain would do in a situation like that...

    • @zombiedalekweck2243

Britain would probably be like:"Ahaha no" and declare war and steal it, remember Britain legit nearly declared war on the USSR multiple times in our own timeline with them having Alaska they would fear for Canada's safety and attempt to neutralise the threat, what would come of this? Alot I imagine USSR and British tensions would go through the roof with the British actively supporting White Army Remnants or anyone who opposes the USSR this would also most likely cause Britain to adopt a way more anti-communist policy in our timeline as it's most likely from stealing Alaska the Soviets would be like:"Wait they stole Alaska! What happens if they steal more and invade us" probably sending Stalin down a route where he gets threatened and his usual paranoid route so where he begins starting to fund communist movements across the Globe and funding Communist China. Now what would Britain and the Allies do about the Axis Powers? Well it's most likely they will be even more lighter on them but it would probably be the same result but there is a bigger chance for Germany being allowed to do whatever in Central Europe and eventually come into conflict with the USSR at this point it's a bit iffy on what would happen as there is three main routes this can take.
      1. History plays out exactly the same except Britain is more Anti-Communist and holds a more aggressive stance towards the USSR and it's associated nations.
      2. Britain and the Allies lets Axis do whatever until the Axis comes in conflict with the USSR in which cause they join directly and establish a new Russian Regime in the lands they managed to get or support Germany and help the White Army Remnants rise up and fight back against the USSR basically making it so Germany gets the majority of the land while a new Russian Regime that is weaker and probably just barely has Moscow
      3. The intervene when Russia invades the Baltics and Finland sparking a war there who would win? I do not know probably the USSR in that case and then history will probably play out the same (I mean as in Allied troops rush into the Baltics or Finland something like that)

I’d disagree that the Bolsheviks would have still come to power, with Russia’s victory in the Russo-Japanese war the duma wouldn’t have existed so most would more likely push for moderate democratic and socialist reforms rather than revolution especially if conditions had been bettered in previous year as he had eluded to.

Fair point, but consider that such radicalism was already growing, and would continue to grow as a result of the upheaval during WW1. The Petrograd Soviet, after all, wasn't greatly connected to the Duma at all, but rather started off as an independent union of sorts.

Since the U.S. was concerned enough about the Bolshevik Revolution to be willing to take the very difficult step of sending forces to Siberia in our timeline, it seems a pretty good bet that there would be an even larger U.S. incursion in this one.

It’s probably because the US did not mean to combat the Bolsheviks directly but to protect Entente arms shipments from Germany or unknown actors, the Detroit’s Own only fought the Bolsheviks near archangels because the Churchill and the British expeditionary forces wanted too and the French wanted to reopen the eastern front with the help of the Czech legion. The US troops where then forced to because the British out ranked them in country and the US major in charge didn’t care enough to wire back to the US

Korea as a French colony would have very interesting implications: the Franco-Prussian war potential avoidance, and the partition of China.
I can see the 1866 expedition as the starting point of this alternate history. Instead of a small expedition France would have to send a major force that would somehow achieve the submission of Korea in the following years.
Geopolitically the most immediate change might be the avoidance the Franco-Prussian war, I can see two scenario happen:
      A) The conquest of Korea brings France a lot of prestige but it isolate France diplomatically (it goes against Russia and the UK interests in Asia). Napoleon III is therefore more cautious and doesn't fall into Bismark plan. The German unification is delayed and France remain the main power in continental Europe for the next decade.
      B) Napoleon III get cocky and responds to Bismark provocation anyway. France is in turmoil and seriously weakened for the next decades (what happened historically).
The second big change that might happen is the partition of China. The strong presence of France around China might motivate some big moves during the boxer rebellion. A partition of China would be in everybody interest as it would be the occasion to rework the balance of power in the area. France would have to accept modest gains while the British and Russian Empires would be the ones getting the most out of it. Other European powers would get parts of China , by order of importance: Germany (if it exists), Belgium, the Netherlands, Italy and Portugal. I really don't know for Japan, it might be the big looser of this alternate history.
The map of the world would be very different and geopolitics greatly affected by the partition of China, so I can't predict more except that Korea's dominant faith would definitely be Christianity. Catholicism, and to a lesser extent Protestantism would take over Buddhism and the native Shamanic religions.

Not sure if this is just me , but would Russia not losing the Russo-Japanese war mean that the British fear of Russia dominating Asia and thus threatening India continue ? Especially after their conquest of Central Asia giving them near direct access to India . With Japan proving they are unable to properly counter Russian domination of Asia alone . Would they not try to ally Germany ? Or at the very least allow Germany and Russia to duke it out alone . Not only that if ever Germany position in Central Europe be loss . It would mean that the Russians would be able to focus on Asia while France would be able to use German industry and population and increase their own risk . Keep in mind this is before the first Great War so the diplomatic relationships France and Britain are still icy at best .

I disagree that there would even be a successful Bolshevik revolution in this timeline. One of the major causes for Red sympathies was the repeated defeats, first in the east, then in the west. If Russia had won the war in the east, that would largely lift the threat of revolution. It might have even majorly shifted the way the Great War happened as one of the reasons Germany was so willing to go to war was the assumption that they would be able to easily beat whatever the Russians sent at them, an assumption which originated in the humiliation of the Russo-Japanese war

1)Alaska could be a Taiwan 2.0, as Constitutional Monarchy after Revolution and strong aligned with USA and Western countries, after soviet collapses they did a referendum for rejoin Russia but fails and remains independent at nowadays.
    2) Red Army crosses the Bering Strait and conquer Alaska, into a Soviet Socialist Republic until 1991 when gets independent, and could be a Belarús or Ukraine 2.0

Except for the Sakhalin and the Kuril Islands, Russian Alaska getting any territory in Asia seems highly unlikely.
    1. There is no reason for the communists to give away the Chinese and Korean territories that they got in our timeline.
    2. The USA would have trouble negotiating the loss of Hokkaido with Japan, and it wouldn't even be in their long term interest. Everyday lost in the negotiation with Japan is a day for Stalin's armies to advance even further into Manchuria/Korea. And the idea was to make post-war Japan and ally anyway.
    3. A peace where Russia share no land border with the soviet union satisfy every body.

Just had an interesting idea for a potential scenario. What if Baldwin the Fourth of Jerusalem didn't have leprosy? It seems like a minor change at first, but the more you get into it, the more interesting it seems. With his tactical genius, it seems unlikely that Jerusalem would have fallen like it did in our time line. Without Jerusalem falling, there is no Fourth Crusade, and thus no sacking of Constantinople. He would have likely been able to marry and produce an heir of his own, thus preventing the succession crisis that put Guy de Lusignan on the throne. Even if it only delayed the fall of Jerusalem by a few decades, it still would have irrevocably changed world history, IMO.

I really doubt that Russia would ever be a figurehead monarchy i could see it as a constitutional monarchy with the Tsar as a strong executive but not a figurehead monarchy because there is no way the Church or Tsarists would stand for that

    • @angelopueyygarcia43
      @angelopueyygarcia43 3 роки тому +2

Indeed a figure head tsar is the antithesis of all that is Russian. The Tsar is the voice of god, his divine regent to guide men in the mortal world. Turning the Tsar into a figure head would be the same as spitting in the face of God(in the minds of the Russian people at least.)

    • @martinboskovic1009

so true, but what would be the effects of "americanisation" of Russian mind(and elite is westernised already, being composed of "white" emigrees from noble and upper middle classes) in this remote colony separated from motherland for decades is impossible to tell. At least, the February revolution and overthrowing of the tsar was done by upper and middle classes "democrats", not by working masses and bolsheviks, they come later, through that breech.

It honestly is because it would at least make a hypothetical and give some reasons as to how it could have happened...unlike some channels who just end up giving a TLDR of the history, not even going deep into the history outside a generalization, and then saying ‘oh the variables are too much to consider to give a good representation’
Cody... it’s Cody and alternate history hub.
If he should give a fun tldr and generalization on anything, it’s the alternate history, explaining what happened in a tldr in our timeline is just a copout of doing work on some creatives.

By the time Soviet Union falls, I don't think Alaskans would want to join Russia. Because of Economic turmoil in Russia at the time and Alasakan Nationalism (being separated for 69 years they will have their own national identity). There will be irredentist in Alaska and Russian Mainlanders who would support unification.

A great land power fighting a great sea power would likely be a draw with perhaps USA taking some lands from Canada while UK took the Sandwich Islands and bombarded the coasts. The consequences for 1914 being more significant. Just a thought.

Too bad the Ramona did not survive in this timeline, how about what if George V did gave his cousin Tsar Nicholas II and his family a political asylum somewhere where the soviets won't find them? That a would a cool what if alternate history King George V chose family over some political matters even if he has to disagree with his cabinet and his advisors.
