In the less than ten minutes it took to watch your video, I've been able to refine my comedy writing more than in several years of writing classes. Thank you for sharing your knowledge. I finally feel comfortable taking the next step in my career. Xo
Really impressed by this - thanks so much for your great content. Question for you, Jerry: does looking at comedy as a science take away some of its human appeal? When you begin labeling types of jokes, types of laughter, and cycling through combinations of laughter elements, do you reduce comedy to a less genuine, more formulaic product? For this reason, might your approach be more appropriate for improv, where algorithms are more necessary for quick-witted responses, or do you think it's just as applicable for stand-up?
Great question! I would say, for the short term the analytical side of anything can affect your freestyle creativity, but when it just becomes a part of you, you'll find that you really expand as a comic. Because you know all the Triggers and Structures inherently it makes it easier to be even funnier in the moment. I hope that makes sense. I took tennis lessons. When the pro changed my grip it was totally awkward, but after I got used to it I got so much better so much faster.
Jerry, love the material, but one suggestion: You really should reshoot this so you can give a joke example after each trigger. Examples will bring each point more to life. Reminds me somewhat of when I read English grammar rules. Each rule gave me the info, but it wasn't until I saw it used in the example sentence that I fully comprehended it.
Thank yu very much sir.. I olso ,actually comedy is portion i mean i have too much talents on comedy, but right now i am just looking for oportunity just to be on stage.
Today is my first time ever doing stand-up comedy if they let me I’m so scared but I’m gonna go out there relax do my best learn something and try to raise the people up thanks Jerry thanks Reggie rice thanks mom dad God and customers consumers me and you
The explanation for the "homophobia" joke was funny, as well as the joke itself. Intentional or not, it is some measure of comedy in its very explicableness. Am I making sense? I'm struggling to explain that here. Anyway, it was all good stuff and I appreciate your insights.
Thx Jerry. excuse the question: what is the e book!? i m subscribed on you tube , however i don't find links to other things you offer!!?? im from israel so maybe they r not available
Hi Jerry, great video. I'm a brazilian actress and never wrote comedy before but want to. I'm having a hard time finding resources in portuguese. Do you think I could use your ebook as well? Even not having previous experience? Thanks!!! Carol
Thanks so much. I'm now combing through your content like a meth head amputee with a salad fork prosthetic. I'm 40 years old and have set myself the goal of doing comedy, on stage in front of a breathing audience, before I turn 41. I'm horrified. And really excited about it. If you had ANY specific advice I would absolutely pay attention.
I do political talk radio. Do you think that pushing myself to try stand-up comedy would help? I live in Las Vegas which offers a pretty good laboratory. What would you recommend I do. I like your videos very much, btw.
I'm new in this comedy game. Like performing on stage. My question is is it okay to use the audience as part of your stand-up comment.. and is it okay to use personal things that's in your family that contain to you. Only reason I'm asking is. I have a uncle that's white I have 2 months that's mixed I have couple gay cousins in my family and two of them turn yourself into a woman so is that okay for me to talk about especially if they in my family. I am parsley blind and in a wheelchair
Hello sir, thank you so much so the knowledge you shared with us. I didn't get the fourth one, do you mind explaining it? I will be very grateful to you. THANKS Love from india
Hi Peter. This whole online format has changed so this is the first time I'm seeing these comments. Relativity is incongruity. There are no truly Universal Comedy Structures, so relativity is associative comedy. It's the comedy created by associating one idea to another by using "is-like" or a similar structure in your dialogue. Bill Burr uses this when he says, "The guy that works at Home Depot wants to bang as many hot chicks as a celebrity does, but he can't because chicks don't dig lumber." That's a great example of hiding the structure of "is-like."
i really how to learn how to be comedian- I thought was comedian, until they told me to tell a Joke, and draw a picture of my favorite comedian. they told to tell joke, but I two serious tell a joke. than a woman ask to tell a joke, because my mind was on my money.
What's the deal with packing peanuts? You never get em on airplanes and elephants won't eat then unless you force them. What's the deal with airport elephants?
There are a ton of beginners who don’t know this and experienced people that run into writer’s block or simply tell stories with an idea and a suitcase full of hope that the story will be funny. Showing this simple example can help. Also, you’d be amazed at how many comics that are working don’t know this concept, because they’ve never taken the time to explore what triggers laughter and how to structure a story so it pulls those triggers.

Number 9 was tickling which would be really god damn weird. Don't tickle your audience, creeps.
Dont tell me how to harass my audience
Number 9 (Tickling) Should Be included.
Question: How does a man know if a woman is ticklish?
Answer: He gives her a.... couple of test-tickles!

#9 Laughter _(triggers laughter)_ .
Arené Lomax Good point. Unless you’re the one being laughed at.
Like The character in The Martian, Mark Watney on Mars, as an engineer I can really appreciate sciencing the shit out of comedy !
You just seem like the best guy ever! xD Nice vid!
thank you so much
Jerry Corley is brilliant! Study this video if you want to be funny!
You forgot to refer to Relativity, which in your last joke you referred to several times
(How homophobia is relative to the discussion of phobias.)
Hi Peter. This whole online format has changed so this is the first time I'm seeing these comments. Relativity is incongruity. (9.) Tickling*
*Not suitable for all audiences.
I want to be a comedy writer because I would probably cry if people laughed at me onstage. 🥁🔔
thank you sir
Tickling is the Pluto of laughing triggers, it might count but it got kicked out anyway
What about ken Dodd
very nyc sir
Nice of Charlie Harper to leave Jerry his wardrobe in his will when he got killed off two and a half men
What better way to involve the audience than to tickle them?
thats actually a pretty good joke
i really how to learn how to be comedian-
I thought was comedian, until they told me to tell a Joke, and draw a picture of my favorite comedian. they told to tell joke, but I two serious tell a joke. than a woman ask to tell a joke, because my mind was on my money.
They say comedy is a science... in the cumquat quarterly.
I disagree. If you time the tickling right after the punchline it really heightens the laughter. Especially on a weak joke.
Sir pls react to indian standup comedian

Those who need to be told these basic things dont deserve to be standup comics
Aimim fan You’re an idiot
LOL! Jerry.

Ok Jerry. Fair Enough
Some of us think of these things in different words, but I see parallels with things I am familiar with....
I think I've discovered I don't like standup comedy.
Is 40 too old for beginning stand up
I have a friend who started at 53. He works full-time doing cruises now.
