Heck, I'd like to see an extended episode that's dedicated to a bunch of one-off characters like Boulder, Thumper, Derek, S.C. Ruffey, and the Brake Van.
It always confused me in the classic series how most Diesels we’re described as rude and disrespectful when only Diesel, Arry and Bert were the only ones who never changed.
I think it's largely an artifact of Awdry's early portrayal of diesels since he was against the dieselfication of the BR, and in the early periods there were quite a few reasonable complaints, which can largely be summed up as "if it ain't broke, don't fix it", thus he initially portrayed them all in a more negative light.
When I was little watching the diesels seemed a lil scary or they kinda appeared intimidating especially the really big ones like class 40 and diesel 10
@@AdmiralBlackstar Also most of the diesels Awdry conceived of just didn't appear in the TV series, most of the negative depictions of diesels from the railway series didn't appear in the show, although oddly enough Bear never appeared either despite him being one of the nice diesels in the original books.

Enby TVS Rusty confirmed!!!! I always got that vibe from them, even before I properly understood what nonbinary was, but I thought it was only ever headcannon. Britt, my respect for you just increased a decent chunk. The only thing that I don't love about the RWS cannon is the very mid 20th century lack of gender representation, and it's nice to see that Britt at least tried.
What's great about both Rusty and Duncan, is they play off each other really well, and it's great to put them in the same episode, like Duncan gets spooked.
Greg Tiernan left before Duncan was animated! 2012 was his last year with Thomas and friends so using Duncan (reintroduced in 2014) as an example is not fair.
Ah fair point; in that case I wish his ideology was kept from that point forward. Seeing that Duncan was a major blow to my respect for the CGI series.
I sort of wish this was brought up (or if we know, was Rusty the most reliable of the O-Scale models? I ask because Rusty has no coupling rods. Since most of these videos give me the impression that it was those that caused the most problems.
I've been building a 16mm scale Midlander (going to be a different engine though), but good lord - finding close up shots of the details was a real pain in the backside. Still, my hand sculpting skills for making it proper controls from scratch is on point.
Can I just say that Train Boy admitting that Put Upon Percy is one of his All Time Favourite Episodes makes me very happy. I’ve always had a soft spot for that episode and to see such a big name recognise this underrated episode as a Personal Favourite just makes my Day. Also, what happened to the Large Scale Model’s Buffer Beam in the Thumbnail?
Many years ago, I remember being on the old Microsoft Train Simulator official forums, when the discussion came up about Rusty, and the other narrow gauge trains. One of the forum members was a friend of the Awdry family, and wrote a letter (yes, with pen and paper) to Christopher Awdry asking questions about the trains. Christopher, at the time, helping in the construction of the various trains. In one of the letters, Christopher referred to Rusty as "She". This started a long argument back and forth, with the forum member writing yet another letter, and encouraging Christopher to chime in on things himself if he could. Christopher stated that his father, Rev Awdry, always described Rusty to him as being a female character, and noted that the name "Rusty" was unisex enough to work both for male, or female. Christopher noted that the first time Rusty was called male, was actually with the Britt Allcroft series, which Awdry was greatly annoyed by. Reportedly, Awdry himself brought this problem up with Allcroft, who told the Reverend that the show was being marketed more toward young boys, and not girls, and thus having a locomotive that was a girl wouldn't work. Besides, there were already two female locomotives (Daisy and Mavis), and correcting the error was just going to push production back, as they'd already recorded the voice-overs where Rusty was called "He". Interestingly, Allcroft did seem to acquiesce to Awdry's thoughts on the character, to some degree, by having Starr (the first narrator), affect a slightly feminine voice when voicing Rusty. In the end, though, the whole thing became moot, as by the time that any changes may have been made, viewers were accustomed to seeing Rusty as male, regardless of what the original creator thought. Note: The letters back and forth were scanned and uploaded to the forums. This all took place around 2001, shortly after MSTS released.
I just stumbled across your channel, and boy, do I love your videos! Especially this one. As a kid, I _always_ saw Rusty as feminine-of-center (even despite the male pronouns), and it was kind of amazing to get actual confirmation that this wasn't just in my head!
Voted Slate Trucks, but not disappointed, and actually very satisfied. Edit: if you look at Rusty’s cab and wonder why it’s only open on one side, all of the Talyllyn stations are on the right side of the track so you only needed one door and much of the Coaches are locked shut on one side because only one side needed to be able to open. I haven’t visited the Talyllyn yet, and I’ve only heard about this a while back.
Rusty is an interesting character for sure. While I don't really like the larger scale Narrow Gauge models for having faces completely different from their smaller scale counterparts, Rusty is an outlier for having a gargantuan face on top of the different expressions. Still, the large engines are pretty good shape wise at least. Also I always liked that Rusty was gender neutral and kinda wish that stayed. Rather nice representation for those who are Non-Binary.
At 6:09, I thought you said ‘…horror model railway museum…’ and I believed you were talking about Drayton Manor lol Good to know Rusty isn’t, in fact, trapped there.
