Hi, i never really listened to music based podcasts before, since most never really ever speak to me, but this one spoke to me immediately when i watched the first episode. Listening to you two ramble about music is really fun and chill 💜
Would love to hear you two talk about Quadeca's "I Didn't Mean To Haunt You" sometime, one of my favorite records ever and one of few that are able to make me cry. Such a beautiful and heartbreaking musical piece that is very underrated and honestly deserves so much more recognition

As soon as Astrid said that there were a lot of guest composers/musicians on the album the quirks I noticed made a lot of sense. As someone new to Bjork, the way moods of the tracks flip flopped between gritty, emotional, industrial-sounding pop like Army of Me and Enjoy, to symphonic, poetic narratives like Hyperballad and Isobel kept me fixated. But on the second listen, even with the eclectic mix of styles, It's easy to pick out the recurring themes like Isolation, guilt and loneliness that she sings about, because her VOICE oh my god... I should've been put on to Bjork so much sooner.
Also, DO NOT listen to Army of Me while stoned! I was so scared I thought I was about to meet the army of Bjork...

For the longest time, the only exposure I ever had of Bjork was through Spike Jonze’s video of “It’s Oh So Quiet”, it serving as the finale of a DVD retrospective on his iconic and insanely creative video output from the late 90’s/early 00’s that I must have watched dozens of times. In a collection already as eclectic as that DVD, Bjork’s big band cover struck so fondly as a breathtaking cooldown and one that, in spite of its simplicity compared to The Pharcyde’s reverse-movement “Drop” or the cross-city golf journey of Dinosaur Jr’s “Feel the Pain”, stayed memorable in its lively tribute to Classic Hollywood musicals and lovely in its bright laundromat setting that spools into the street for a transcendent crane shot. Despite me loving that video, for whatever reason I never followed up on the rest of her career, and even when acquiring a copy of Vespertine, that album just stayed on the shelf as I continued to explore much more noisy anti-pop music.
Fast forward to now, at the near-peak of my “Bjork Discovery obsession” on the impetus of hearing a snippet of “Pagan Poetry” and curiosity in reading Emily Mackey’s book on “Homogenic” and I absolutely fell in love with her initial splash in music, Debut being such a fun, catchy dive into art pop and trip-hop and Post being such a radical, fierce album that grabs your attention with the full range of her voice, from the muscle of “Army of Me” to the majestic serenity of “Hyperballad”, and electro-alternative instrumentals that feel so ahead of their time while also being unafraid to dive inward towards the history of music (especially with “I Miss You” being such an evocative blend of electronic and jazz music that feels like an extension of her smooth jazz collaboration as a part of “Gling-Glo”). Hearing you two touch on the romantic and isolated side of Bjork’s lyrics really added another layer to this album I absolutely loved listening to again in preparation and really cements why, even with an album as phenomenal as Homogenic, this is the album I like to come back to often.
Adding to the album cover discussion, a lot of the props surrounding Bjork that get lost in the haze are items that belonged to her personally, imported from Iceland in order to emphasize the themes of isolation that recur throughout the album, and her dress is a sly humorous reflection of that core idea being modeled on a post office envelope, as if preparing to send herself back to Iceland as a means of escaping from the newfound fame she’s received. There’s a book I bought awhile back that collects 100 really inspired album covers and details the design aspects and reflections from the cover artists that was written by Aubrey Powell and Storm Thorgerson (AKA two former members of Hipgnosis, the GOATs of album covers), and it’s a great read given how often venerated classics and complete unknowns get compiled on the pure basis of how eye-catching the artwork is, with Post being the most modern at the time of its release, the eccentric blend of Pinks/Oranges/Blues really suggesting the madcap genre-blending, the demure yet vulnerable facial expression on Bjork, I love this album cover so much and it’s easily my favorite of hers (though Volta’s a close second if only because it gives me a good idea of what my next Halloween costume will be).

I listened to Post only because of you. I'm not a person to really cry a lot, but recently I've been trying to be more open to myself about my feelings, and this album got me. 🥲
The way she uses musical harmony, tembro, rhythm, and volume to enhance her words with new meaning is just magical; and thanks to the fact that every song is unique, these techniques don't get old at all.

My range of music that I listen to has always felt kinda small, so I'd like to thank you both for giving me new music to listen to. Your commentary is a huge help because I don't feel like I'm going into an album blind/have some context to enrich the experience. I'm looking forward to more episodes!

One of my favorite things about the pod is the difference in how they interpret the meaning of songs. When they were talking about Army of Me (I believe), both of them said the meaning was about frustration. Alex took it in a more human nature way of relationships which I’d assume due to him being more familiar with hip hop. Astrid instead took the meaning of frustration in a political way dealing with capitalism, which I believe is because she is more familiar with punk music. Anyways loving the episodes so far and can’t wait to hear more! ❤

at first, i wasn't too used to the rawness of her vocals, but i've grown to like them. they're not perfect, and that's the point :)

  • @Akitektur

How I interpret ‘Hyper-ballad’ is that the Narrator is in this perfect seeming relationship (the mountain top). It’s the kind of stable, safe and great relationship everyone wants, but it’s not really what the narrator wants.
They throw away things from this perfect world to feel something more, even if it makes the metaphorical mountain less perfect.
They feel guilty for this, but can’t get themselves to stop, so they just do it in secret(doing it in the early morning). They even think about ending things completely (throwing themselves off), wondering if they would be happier in a different situation, or regret throwing it away (“Will my Eyes be closed or open?”).
I think it’s about this “perfect relationship” just not being what everyone wants, or that the people that actually have it, might not actually love it as much as you would think. They force themselves to like this, because it’s “beautiful”. It’s the “top of the mountain” and yet they made a habit of throwing parts of the mountain away, because something about it just isn’t for them.
Thats just my interpretation and rambling though.

Ah! Post definitely charted, I have heard some of these songs! Only realized as I listened to it. Overall I enjoyed it quite a bit, compared to Debut I think the sound has aged really well. I feel like my experience with this album is fogged by both my childhood and the tonal shift that happens after the first three or so songs. So it feels the beginning of Post came from a different universe. Favorite track, not including the first two songs which I have burned into memory, is Possibly Maybe. Although that song feels slightly monotonous instrumentation-wise, those cymbal taps are to die for and obviously vocally its great as well. Looking forward to continuing down her discog
