    As much of a punk and metalhead as I am, Bjork is another of my all time favourites. I love how weird and interesting she is to this very day. Truly a unique artist. I hope you go all the way back to her first solo album, "Debut", sometime, and when you do, make sure to check out the official video for "Human Behaviour." It's still one of my favourite songs of hers, and the video is a trip and a half!
    You might also like to check out another great Icelandic export, the band "Sigur Ros." They've got a very ambient, dreamy sort of sound, really beautiful stuff. Pure vibes, and another band with a mid-90s start that's still going today.

      Have you checked out Björks punk era? with bands like Tappi Tikarass (Cork the bitches ass), Kukl and the Sugarcubes? If not you really should. Björk was a part of the punk wave on Iceland as a teenager, "playing in more bands than there are geysers on Iceland".

    I always recommend listening to Bjork's Discography in Chronological Order for that exact reason. Her Musical and Emotional evolution is displayed in each forthcoming album she releases. Her implementation of Classical instruments with the Harsh contrast of Industrial Electronica EDM/Underground Rave beats shouldn't work But she somehow Seamlessly Intertwines them , creating these Lush , euphoric Soundscapes that have Influenced so many of today's ("unconventional") artists. Def try listening to them in release order sometimes its not about what you want to hear, its more about listening to something you didn't even know you needed to hear but you are The better for listening to 😊. 🥂

    Check out "Gling-Glo", it's a Bjork album where she covers jazz and big band standards like "It's Oh So Quiet" - except all translated into Icelandic.

  • @Jacob_Junge
    @Jacob_Junge 9 місяців тому +5

    It's Oh So Quiet sounds atypically Björk, because it's a cover of an early 1950s American Big Band version of a late 1940s German song, Und Jetzt Ist Es Still.
    The one you've heard in ads is probably the '50s version performed by Betty Hutton.

    Isobel is part of a trilogy of songs, including Human Behaviour off Debut, and Bachelorette off Homogenic. Something about a little girl born in a forest, moving to the big city, then the forest taking over the city. I dunno. Björk shit.
    I named my daughter Isobel after the song though.

    Some trivia history: "Debut" and "Post" refer to the "before " and "after" of songs she had been composing in her head for years, so these first two albums are her clearing those songs and getting them "out of the way."
    With "Homigenic," she had a fresh start and conceived an album with a more "homogenous" sound, hence the vocals, strings and beats creating the loud, explosive, intense and "volcanic" songs. "Vespertine" utilized a similar concept but the opposite: a full orchestra, a choir, microbeats, harps and metallic sounds combined to make a more intimate listening experience.
    Also, "Post" has its own remix album, "Telegram," which goes back to the aerogram wardrobe she sports on the "Post" cover; her time in London inspired both "love letters" she was sending back to Iceland.
    Every album has its own concept and character, hence why every cover is literally just a portrait of her in an album's character.

  • @ClaytonMacleod

    I suggest you read the lyric for Hyper-Ballad because it most definitely is not an upbeat song. It’s about someone that’s suicidal and is doing things to try to keep from killing themselves just to continue being there for someone they care about. One of the saddest songs I’ve ever heard.

    • @laredolassoo
      @laredolassoo 9 місяців тому +7

      A literal reading might suggest that. But I'd never taken it that way, nor do at least some of the online 'meaning' sites. For me, it was always an acknowledgement that even in relationship we are (& need to be) individual - and existentially at least, alone. It's a worshipful recognition of the dark and light in all of us, of the value in exploring our darkness, fears and imagination to ultimately return us to our wholeness - with ourselves and in relationship. It's ultimately, for me, a poetic wonderment at the dangerous beauty of existence! And VERY positive, as its music underscores.

    • @ClaytonMacleod
      @ClaytonMacleod 9 місяців тому +1

      @@laredolassooThe music is sad. Matches the sad lyric. And as someone that was suicidal for a brief period many years ago in my younger days, it struck me very hard the first time I heard it. If it hits you differently, well, that's art!

    • @MrTonyInchpractice
      @MrTonyInchpractice 9 місяців тому

      Youre totally wrong. It's about Bjork not liking to feel safe. Not about suicide, that's just you being a drama queen.

    • @laredolassoo
      @laredolassoo 9 місяців тому +3

      @@MrTonyInchpractice I'd argue it's not that she doesn't like feeling safe, but can't until she acknowledges and gives space to her powerful sense of the fragility and existential terror of life. And maybe of entrapment in a normal, 'civilized' life. It does seem uncharitable, though, to accuse the OP of being a drama queen when it's clear his real life experience led him to a certain interpretation ~ especially at Christmas 🎄

    • @hdufort

    The first two tracks encapsulate everything that is great about Björk. Army Of Me is a prowling, stomping monster, while Hyperballad is a sunlit Alpine wildflower meadow.
    If you like dynamic female vocalists, may I suggest listening to contemporary progressive rock band, Bent Knee. Front woman Courtney Swain lets loose some serious pyrotechnics at times, while at others is gentle and lilting. If you only do album reactions, I'd go with either Shiny Eyed Babies or Say So to start with.

    True story- Bjork and her producer got into a huge fight about where her album was going. Bjork said that Army Of Me is about how they were arguing back and forth, and that they were both tired of each other complaining and whining about their creative differences.

      @@NathanHautain From what you say, maybe it's about both situations. the whole "self suffiecience please, and get to work" is the proucer telling Bjork to stop fucking around and be a professional. and "your rescue squad is too exausted" is Bjork telling the producer that she won't change her integrity to make his sorry ass of a producer look good

      @@PHLCoffeeSnob I think you're thinking of Cover Me, which was in response to Nellee Hooper declining to be the album producer this time because he thought she could do it by herself. In the end he agreed to be around as backup, hence "cover me". Army of Me comes from Debut sessions, and according to her it's about her brother. I don't think anyone who's ever worked with her would have ever said she wasn't a professional.

    I believe the not-quite “harp” sound on cover me is a “clavichord” which is kind of like a miniature harpsichord. And so like a harpsichord, and unlike a piano where the stings are hit with felted hammers, the stings here are being plucked by metal picks that are triggered by the keys. Which is why it has the plucky sound of the harp, but is maybe a little sharper sounding and less warm and fuzzy around the edges because of the metal picks, and also probably the less spaciousness of the instrument offers less resonance.
