I miss this Ash. Here, he was an funny and immature kid who was still trying to figure things. In later seasons, it didn't feel like Ash was maturing; but he lost what personality he had and was just a surrogate for the audience instead of being his own person.

Pokemon still holds up as one of the best English dubbed anime imo. The actors really put their all into not just the dubbing but the acting and gave the English dub its own flair. They did it soo well I think many of us thought of Pokemon as an American cartoon versus an anime dub. Especially because at that point anime dubs werent very mainstream other than the very classic ones or Dragonball Z and a bit later Yu-Gi-Oh.

I am Japanese, but this video made me feel very nostalgic. I was deeply moved to think that when I was a child, children in countries other than Japan were watching the same things. @@silvervirio3642 For example, at 4:20, the Japanese Ash didn’t say "I don't need a new gun", he just said, "Ah...! I mean...!" In the scene where Ash disguises himself as a girl, (7:45) the Japanese version uses a language that only women use instead of the high-tone voice. I don't remember them all, but there must be more! In the first few seasons his incompetence was funny because the tone in those seasons is largely comedic. But in Unova the writers made it more serious so Ash’s incompetence was just annoying.

In the early show, Team Rocket were actually intimidating. Part of it, as shown when Ash tried to fight them directly with his fists, was the art style established that Jessie and James had to be either older teens or young adults, and thus were able to directly physically overpower the kid protagonists. Pokemon training and battling felt a lot more naturally explainable as a fantasy monster-based form of self-defense and not just play fighting.
They are still clowns in a way in the show, and the fact they lost to someone who is shown to be an idiot most of the time shows it. Ash mistaken Jessie for a pokemon because he cant see her in the dark. 😂
1:16 this shows how Team Rocket could easily beat Ash if they wouldnt play by the rules of Pokemon batteling and just used brute force, at least back then xd
@George Khoory I honestly didnt remember, but they are 2, Jessie is not exactly weak either, and right here you can see James overpowering him with ease, even though he can throw a massive log over a river xd but no offense if you like Ash more just go ahead i didnt mean to start a fight
Being 10 in the 90s was a wild time for him. I'm willing to let some of these go because he is 10 from a small town. Not to mention pikachu's shocks probably fried some of his brain cells.
To be fair, the voice Taylor used in the earliest episodes helped with that. It made his mistakes sound more like comedic stupidity as opposed to childish naivety when Ash's voice got higher.
And now he's getting dumb again. Goh could be glad to tell you that one and I don't care about Pokemon for the last ten years. Haven't watched pokemon since Hoenn was done and haven't played Pokemon since I caught then all playing Pokemon Sapphire. All 368 or 386 at the time. After that, my Pokemon interest was over. I still talk about it but One Episode I still love to this day. The Flame Pokemon-A-Thon. Most of the entire episode dealt with real life to me last year and this year. Ponyta/Rapidash was very similar to the movie Balto. That's why I liked it.
Watching this as a kid was what really made me like ash. He was funny, a good kid, and savage asf. Now a days I love his laid back personality, positive attitude, and amazing battle tactics.
Anyway: I predict Ash will be a himbo in the future because of how freaking heavy the Pokemon he lifts are and he'll always be learning new things becoming a master Pokemon trainer. Kinda like Joe from Sk8
This was great! I loved seeing this compilation from the first season, it makes me remember why I loved watching every single episode! Poor Ash gets made fun of for being so dumb, but really the reason why he questions everything was for the sake of the audience. The kids watching had no idea about Pokemon, so his stupidity was the reason for explaining everything. Ash's lack of knowledge helped to train us on the world of Pokemon!

This the writing in this season 😂. I feel like any and every animated show back in 1998-2002 had impeccable humor that’s funnier as an adult, versus a child back then
9:56 That's more wholesome than stupid, Ash just wants to be part of Pikachu's new group but failed to understand the fear of these pikachu. In the end he's even willing to let his buddy stay with them because he sees how happy pikachu is with them.
Yeah a few of them I feel just reflected him being a child, not an idiot.
I love how he tries to capture a pidgey by suffocating it and a spearow by giving it a concussion
I thought he was in the safari zone.

I love how Ash's pikachu is aware of it's speaking limitations. Ash asked the question, and pikachu processed it and gave a proper valid answer. I wonder what the show would have been like if pikachu could speak.
totally a detective pikachu kind of deal going on. manly stuff, being quirky and all
It wouldn’t be exactly for kid, because he would cuss Ash out black and blue.

I feel like Pikachu would swear up and down at every action Ash took.

I miss this Ash. Here, he was an funny and immature kid who was still trying to figure things. In later seasons, it didn't feel like Ash was maturing; but he lost what personality he had and was just a surrogate for the audience instead of being his own person.
I quite agree, he quite lose some of his unique personality but I can accept that he grown in some level, especially in battle skill.
I really like that he doesnt brag about Everything (he used to brag about having 2 badges but now he brushed off winning the Alola League as just winning some Tournament) but i have to agree with the rest of it
Well there’s actually this video by Lumiose Trainer Zac that explains how Ash matured throughout the whole series, I reccomend it
Yeah, he’s basically without personality. I wish that he at least had some sort of dry wit to make up for everything, not to mention he’s still pretty dumb in the newer series. I want him to be kind, smart, mostly humble, and a harmless-yet-harsh roaster (basically a self insert of me lol).
Atleast he got his funny personality back in gen 7 onwards
Pokemon still holds up as one of the best English dubbed anime imo. The actors really put their all into not just the dubbing but the acting and gave the English dub its own flair. They did it soo well I think many of us thought of Pokemon as an American cartoon versus an anime dub. Especially because at that point anime dubs werent very mainstream other than the very classic ones or Dragonball Z and a bit later Yu-Gi-Oh.

I am Japanese, but this video made me feel very nostalgic. I was deeply moved to think that when I was a child, children in countries other than Japan were watching the same things.
It is interesting to note that in some places, the dialogue differs from the Japanese version.
I loved Ash as a child😂♡Pokemon is amazing
Can you share some difference you remember?
@@silvervirio3642 For example, at 4:20, the Japanese Ash didn’t say "I don't need a new gun", he just said, "Ah...! I mean...!" (only filler words) Probably because there is no gun-buying culture in Japan (the English version of this scene is funnier😄).
In the scene where Ash disguises himself as a girl, (7:45) the Japanese version uses a language that only women use instead of the high-tone voice.

I think Jessie and James are supposed to be 17 or 18.
I think Jessie is supposed to be 25 years old.
Jesse and James can gun an old man
I always thought Jessie and James were in their mid-late 20's

Ash was the most dumbest funniest main character back then.
