  • The '94 BMW 840Ci made the the ultra expensive 8-Series a touch more attainable by using a V8 instead of the 850's v12.

I owned one of them back in the day. Fun little car. Sadly, for the BMW, which would be nearly $150K in today's money, the 02 Sentra SE-R was actually faster, even in stock form. Put a few mods on them like CAI, exhaust, headers, and they could get real quick.

I am the proud owner of a 1996 BMW 840CI for the last 16 years. I have kept the car in all original condition ,except for the tinted windows...which made the car stand out twice as much. The car gets a lot of attention and is a head turner. I have noticed an uptick in the amount of attention the car is getting once I got it back on the road after a 4 year stint of sitting in the garage to what I thought was a blown head gasket ,luckily it was just a few blown hoses. But ever since I got it back on the road, I have noticed the car is getting double the attention it used to before I garaged it. The car is a pleasure to drive and it never gets old driving it.

@@V8_screw_electric_cars LOL no. Both power and aerodynamics work together to allow a certain top speed. But as @Tuukka Simonen said, this car will probably just about hit around 160mph with that engine, but like all BMWs it had a standard 155mph limiter. The 850CSi with 380hp would probably hit 180mph if de-limited and if you're refering to the video I'm thinking of, that was an 850CSi.

Didn't know Gus Fring worked for MW back in the 90's. Maybe its the glasses lol.
As for those saying this 840i was slow, I would have to agree, at least through the quarter mile. The rear drive ratio and transmission were geared to turn low RPM at autobahn speeds. A 1994 Z28 Camaro would smoke this thing, stock vs stock. Guarantee you wouldn't want to drive that Camaro at 150mph for more than a minute or two, darty, feels like its going to fly apart. The BMW would do that speed for 8 hours straight and feel rock solid doing it.
As for its competition, I always thought the Lexus SC line was king of the 90's big coupes. The base model SC300 posted similar performance numbers despite having just 225hp from its inline six. And it costs half a much new and isn't an unreliable money pit like the BMW.

For $68K in '94, or $115K today, you'd better be getting me to 60mph a Hell of a lot faster than 7 secs. I want to say the '94 Mustang GT or Camaro SS's were pulling that or quicker for $20K. MW was acting like this was no big deal..for that money. Really? And don't tell me the car is a Grand Tourer, and therefore its not expected to get up to speed quickly. That thing should be doing sub 6 secs runs all day long for that money.

Faux Craig Singhaus BMW is in a different league. 90’s American cars had nasty interiors, stone age leaf spring suspension, drum brakes... I could go on. The BMW had none of these things. And was a LOT safer to crash in, and it still looks good today. Which is why they are collectible and going up in value.

You have smooth DOHC engines as opposed to pushrod trash, fantastic design, fit and finish inside and out a much more modern suspension system as stated above. A timeless look that is truly a masterpiece of late 80s design 7 seconds for the day was pretty damn good even if a godawful ugly SN-95 with a crown vic engine could do a little better. this had a 5 speed auto in 1994 this had everything that was cutting edge at the time a clean one of these will go for 12k-20k a clean SN-95 GT will go for 5k and they are some of the worst eye sores on the road one of the ugliest generations of mustangs by far perhaps even the ugliest dare I say.

    • @treasurehunt2000
      @treasurehunt2000 6 років тому

Yes, yes for that price. That piece of shit SN-95 gt had a 3.27 axle ratio this had a 2.81 so this is a cruiser that is designed for comfortable sustained high speed travel with design, build quality, character, and all the cutting edge tech of the 90s independent suspension, 5 speed auto, DOHC engine, disc brakes and once again a look unlike anything of the day. I think you would be better presenting your argument to the point a to point b crowd as you seriously don't understand why one of these would cost much more than one of those horrid looking ancient technology plastic dinosaurs all SN-95s should be scrapped! Your argument correlates to a point where American cars were total shit and german cars where fantastically built with ingenious engineering, you would be better off comparing a new mustang a s550 gt to a 650i but even then you would make the same points that don't really apply when you compare the two and what purpose they are built for. I mean fuck you could take a 1994 civic and throw a turbo on it and run a 5 second 0-60 do I give a fuck? NO! Premium has a price!!

Back in the day when BMW built cool looking cars. Not blisteringly fast but a good handler for the day. A buddy of mine picked one of these up a couple of years ago with about 50k on the odometer in perfect garage kept shape. I think he paid 6k for it but the engine had some major issues so out the 4.0 came and in when an LS7 with the 6 speed manual trans. Blasphemous for any purist sure but the money he was paid for the 4.0 and trans covered the cost of the LS swap. It's now a real performer and he prefers driving it over his 17' 735 with the 4.4.

Lincoln Mark VIII is faster, way more reliable. Stops as good, handles better. And is not a maintenance nightmare..

I totally agree, although one point here is that most people switch out the air struts for standard.

My 1993 has the current air springs. My last 1993 MArk I had to replace the fronts.. Very easy to do. I would never change out the air springs for coil. NEVER !!

It's the 850ci that's a nightmare because of the hot mess that was the V12. The V8's require a bit of work but they're not a nightmare.

0-60 in 7 seconds is surprisingly slower than I would have guessed for this car. I would have thought a 6 second time would have been a little more accurate.

So for half the price you could've got a Corvette that would've destroyed it, or for around the same price you could've got a viper or zr-1 and obliterated it.

The '94 BMW 840Ci made the ultra expensive 8-Series a touch more attainable by using a V8
    instead of the 850's V12.
