Freewing F14 Tomcat Upgraded Flight Review. FMS V2 Platinum

- I upgraded the motors and esc's in my Freewing Motion Rc F14 Tomcat. With the new V2 Platinum 2100kv motors and Predator 100A sbec esc's, I can say the power and vertical in this thing is much much much better. Takeoff distance is shortened by 100ft, vertical is as unlimited as I could want and the power to pull out of a bad maneuver or landing is awesome.

As an aero-modeller, I only just discovered your videos. Picked up some great info, ideas and solutions to fixing "tricky bits". Stay safe during lock down. Here in Oz, we're hoping some of restrictions can be lifted in my state. We've been fortunate not to suffer hugely compared to the U.S., Britain & Europe. Cheers.
Awesome flying, I'm still waiting for the upgrade stuffs from Horizon, back ordered. Thanks for sharing.
Totally awesome!! Porky definitely tears it up now!! I had actually picked up the 2000kv/100 amp Predator setup some time ago. Going to go ahead and put it into this unmaidened Tomcat. I have another I hope to start building very soon. That one will get the Platinum V2 setup. Thanks for sharing brother!!
Great video. I've been thinking about pulling the trigger on the F14 for some time now and I haven't because I only have grass runway and heard nothing good about flying off of grass with it mainly because of power and retract in it. This definitely gives some hope to my success after upgrading the landing gear and motors. Look forward to seeing more of your videos. Thank you
Nice work! She rips now. Gonna be following your lead on the F14 eventually.
Dig the channel name too.
great flight,I am putting that motor in my eflite F18 or maybe my FW F86
Hello
Wow that's a 🏆 winner. You done a great job on your upgrade. Enjoyed your 📫 post.
Thanks for watching. Share away
Now that looks like a powerful flight from a FW F-14. The new motors are working out great. Sweep the wings next time for a fast low pass👍🏻✌🏻🖖🏻
I haven’t had a lot of good stick time in this f14 yet. Fly, something breaks, fix, repeat. I think now it flys like everything else since I own since I did all the mods. So I will gain more faith in it. I will def look to get footage
Might have to buy those motors. I put the a10 setup in mine but have not tested it yet.
Brian K Mavpro I have heard people like the a10 setup. It’s better than stock for sure. Thanks for watching
Great Video again!! Glad to see you got a lot more power out of the FMS. I'm not sure but with the wings swept back, the ailerons should be deactivated and make it easier to fly. If not I believe there is a way to program that. With the wings swept back you would get even more speed. I wonder if your hitting around 110mph? Thanks again!!!
Ailerons are setup to cancel in swept position. Tailerons only.
@@JustPlaneCrazy Thanks they must have updated from previous versions. I'm is it still that difficult to fly in swept position? Cheers!
I programmed mine to cancel in the swept position. The issue I had was losing trim settings from swept to unswept. I now have that set correctly. I am currently working on a throttle to down elevator mix. Under max throttle it tends to climb. In swept it does the same. On takeoff I don’t want the mix active. I need to fly it more swept. It can and will I just get nervous.
@@JustPlaneCrazy Okay thanks alot. I didn't realize how complex to fly in swept. Hope you make another video with more in swept. Cheers and good luck!
Love it. Nice flight. Was wondering what your flap to elevator mix was? Also was the old motors the 1750kv inrunners? Cheers
Garfield Houstan I believe the old set was 1750 yes. My mix on 1/2 flaps is -17% in spektrum which is up elevator. Landing flaps is -27% which is up elevator. Flap specs are to the book and not full span
@@JustPlaneCrazy thanks much appreciated.
Awesome flight! What is the CG on the ball cap?? Looks nose heavy! 😜
It’s terrible. Lol. Horrible design by someone.
Hi,
I made the same "mistake" like you, I build in the FMS EDF and had a thrust of arround 5,2 kg, not bad was my thinking.
But than I calculated the FSA for this EDF.
The fan has a usable cross-section of arround 41,2 cm², because of the smaller motor-diameter.
The Freewing has a usable cross-section of arround 37 cm² (like the new wemotec midifan 80).
The nozzle has an end-diameter of ca. 68mm that means an FSA of ~88% for the FMS (98% to 100% for a Freewing EDF with a 36mm Motor) and a loss of ~150g in thrust, but faster air per EDF-unit (calculated with ecalc.ch)
So in my case, if the 5,2 kg were more or less correct (meassured on a human scale), I can bring her to 5,5 kp thrust at 6,2 kg weight that means 0,88:1 and not 0,82:1 and with lighter accus (at the moment 830g each) 0,98:1.
So my advice, reshape the inner surface of the end-duct to 72mm and maybe use my FMS-nozzle (at the moment only for a A) www.thingiverse.com/thing:4601348
Since flying this I agree. I don’t have a 3D printer but would be interested in a set. How much?
@@JustPlaneCrazy Hi, maybe it is easier to find a maker in the US ?
I come from germany, so for your help with your video, only the shipping-cost, but I think, this will be arround 30$ ?!
So, if you don't find a maker in US, I will make a set of 2 Nozzles and a tool.
chrisklueppel83 my email is brendenmccormick@att.net shoot me an email and I can do a PayPal to you. Since it’s yours I would rather just pay you if shipping will be around that amount. Shoot me a message through Facebook messenger to. Brenden McCormick thanks. I have been testing and found the FsA was off. I appreciate your work
Man, is that an effect of the on board camera lens or is there a LARGE amount of flex in the wings as you fly?
They flex that hard. This plane is 13.5lbs. Those wings work hard.
I'm about to do this power upgrade. I've got the F-14 and love the look of the model but I'm very disappointed with the power systems that Freewing put in the bird. It's a heavy model to begin with and you'd think they'd give you a little more to play with. It really did feel anemic on the maiden flight but it was workable. I did get to the point where I swept the wings a couple of times. My main issue with that is trim. It's a little off trim in roll with the wings swept as apposed to with them extended. It's not bad, just there.
Question: are you using the bec's on both ESC's at the same time? I've never had a twin before and wasn't sure if that might cause any issues.
People will argue with me all day long. I have the factory bec plus the sbecs plugged in. No issues.
@@JustPlaneCrazy - well, I won't argue with you and thanks for the feedback!
I just got a Freewing F-14 Tomcat PNP 90mm EDF
Which transmitter & receiver do u recommend ? 🤷🏻♂️
It really depends on what you plan to do with the plane. It can fly stock as is and use an everyday 8 channel receiver. If you want to do all the fancy stuff you need a 10-12. I would stick to what ever your currently flying since your most familiar with it and the feel.
Great follow up video, can you give me the actual part numbers for rccastle for the new motors and esc's? I've looked them up at castle and none of them come up as platinum motors, thanks Robert
We call them platinum because they have the grayish/platinum nose cones. They are the fms 2100kv V2 fan units . Horizon probably has them right now also. They were out at at the time I made this.

I currently have 2 new JP 12 blade 2200 kv 80mm complete fans still in the box, What are your thoughts in comparison to the 2100 kv fans from fms?
My thoughts are jP fans are typically heavier. I think you might get a bit more rpm but not the needed torque. Without any testing data I am just assuming and guessing. The 2100 or even fms new 2000 I feel hit the sweet spot
Thanks for your response, I am going to order the fms fans, I watch all your videos, and really appreciate your honesty, your videos have really taught me alot and for that I thank you, I look forward to many many more, keep up the great work, thanks again Robert
I appreciate your questions and you watching. Share the channel when you can it’s always appreciated.
Did you upgrade the landing gear to avoid breaking the body like others did?
ua-cam.com/video/M2gdfRQwP3o/v-deo.html
I had this mod out before anyone else released another version. This is the modelers version with almost little expense. Enjoy
@@JustPlaneCrazy what about the main landing gear? Did you do any mod to them too?
The only thing I did was stretch the internal springs about 5mm.
Good flying
What the flaps elevator mix?
I really need it
Thank you
I run factory flap and settings. Not full span flaps. On half flaps -17% and full flaps -27% that is on spektrum which is up elevator
How much translate in mm?
Pino Custom Granite that’s a tough question. I don’t have it close to check it. That percentage obviously varies by what rates you run on the elevator. I am close to factory throws. What system you running?

Pino Custom Granite I will try to get you an answer as soon as I can
