There is a long list of reasons to port runelite to an in-house client. Security to game integrity to company image and more.
Its embarrassing to have most players playing your game on a 3rd party client. It's easier to keep secure and easier to implement and vet new plug-ins. They can create jobs in the real world. They can bring HDOS together with runelite and all of its features.

They are making their own client to be in control of the game and their IP while still being open to community input with plugins, also to have a tighter grip on botting. The devs of RL and HDOS are aware there will be a time where their clients will be irrelevant. This is good thing also better integration of the plugins and features right into the official client makes things smoother.

    • @UnrebornMortuus

HDOS will always be relevant since its an entirely different art direction than official HD but RL being made irrelevant means the normal client does everything RL can and you would want meaning official client jagex approved plugins

I get what you're saying, we all know runelite is great as is, so why should the official client try be like runelite. A couple reasons why, but it will take time, i doubt runelite will be replaced until a couple years at least, maybe 5 roughly. One main advantage of the new official client compared to the old one is it uses C++ over Java (which runelite uses still) which is much mroe efficient, so it will run better across the board to use less of your PC resources. Another reason is guaranteed support for the client as it will be their own one that they maintain, while it has been great that devs like Adam created runelite and maintain it to this day, Jagex and the community can't rely on them to maintain it forever. There is also considerations like the early days with multiple clients having free and paid versions offering differeing features that ended up being almost pay to win with the features provided, i don't think this scenario would occur again given Jagex's crackdowns on 3rd party cliets other than the ones they approve but it's another consideration. Another big pro for the C++ client is it's also used for the mobile OSRS so that would bring feature partiy between the desktop and mobile versions of the games, imagine all our favourite runelite plugins on mobile! Overall even with the new official client updates, i'll likely keep using runelite until there is a feature parity (plugins, etc) between them and likely most of the community will too, this is just Jagex making progress towards having a long term reliable client with all the features that the community wants. Love the vids as always brother, hope you're going ok with the loss of your friend, wishing you and those close to them all the very best!!

Jagex account wise btw, they already enforced all new accounts to be Jagex accounts at the beginning of 2024, even with the old official java client being decommissioned anyone on the old accounts can still continue to play via runelite for example, they just can't use the Jagex launcher without a Jagex account that's all

I dont think this is a waste of developer time, this is has been a push by Jagex and the community for a while to completely phase out RuneLite and replace it with something that is basically a 1 to 1 copy but with more restrictions to prevent botters who are currently using RuneLite's open source code to abuse it. This is the right direction and hopefully RuneLite is obsolete within the next 2 years. A lot of other RuneLite contributors agree that this is the best direction for the health of the game and you can see this through their actions that they are helping Jagex setting up a Plugin API and port over plugins from Java to Lua. Also C++ is just better than Java by far once the official client gets even close to what RuneLite has a lot of people are going to start switching over. I'm telling you once that Plugin API goes public its going to be a very fast switch over probably within the month it releases everyone will end up switching over.

I will talk to your main questions as to why they want their own Runelite version. First it is not Runelite it is Runescape. When you think of OSRS you think of Runescape but shortly after you are downloading Runelite. Pretty much every video is Runelite this Runelite that. Again this is Runescape not Runelite so the Runescape team are just trying to get that nitch back. The other thing is that Runelite, as good as it is, is limited. It is not availible on mobile and that sucks. I play on both Mobile and Mac and can tell you that jumping back and forth between clients is a frign killer. So lets loop back to the first point; this is Runescape not Runelite and if you are used to Runelite and cannot live without the plugins then you don't wanna play on mobile. The Runescape team cannot force Runelite to build a mobile app so Runelite is cutting off a large chunk of gameplay, trust me I know this. Second point is the official app is so far behind that it really is the "Old" part of Old School Runescape. The core gameplay has changed a ton over the years but the client, well... it remains the same. I personally cannot wait for the official client to catch up and become my everyday cross platform client. Also I am still a little weary of the login process, and this is even mentioned in lots of tutorial videos. Yes the devs say it is safe but I can remember a few years ago there were sites mimicking Runelites site with a client that stoled your login info. Again cannot wait for the official client to catch up to the times. There is more to it than this but this will do for now. Again I use Runelite on my mac but when I play on my phone I am missing the extras so I cannot wait for the official client so I have the same experience across all my platforms.

This is a good thing. Great, actually. The mobile and desktop updates are probably based off the same framework, so doing it for just one and not the other doesn't make sense. In the future, I assume Runelite and HDOS will be the superior third party plugins or somehow integrated into the native client along with many other plugins. We don't need multiple softwares, it should all be compressed into the overall game and Runescape's IP. People can plug and play how they want to. This helps grow the developer community in a stable long term environment while also solidifying Runescape/Jagex's position. The current environment with all of the third-parties involved creates a bit of insecurity for Jagex that they should prioritize handling and building on the product.

One reason I think Jagex is going in this direction is due to mobile. I use my desktop primarily for more intensive tasks and mobile for more afk chill tasks. If you can add plugins and HD to a mobile experience, I would be more likely to tackle quests, bossing, and raids on my phone or tablet. Since you can't get Runelite on mobile, Jagex is trying to fill the gap between the mobile and desktop experience. I also believe that they didn't want to commit the resources just to mobile and figured they might as well have feature parity between the official desktop and mobile client.

Not only will these plugins be huge for mobile, but if the main client has all of the functionalities of Runelite then most plugins will perform better across the board! Rather than depending on a 3rd party the plugins will be coded directly into the main client. Loot trackers will be highly accurate (runelite misses drops or killcounts sometimes), and I recon plugins will have less bugs or failures in general. The hd graphic option will surpass that which is possible with 117hd, and all of this being baked into the vanilla osrs client will make the new player experience far less confusing. If the main client becomes good enough to where a majority of players prefer it over Runelite then it may also be a good way of bot detection/ disallowing botters to use alternative clients. Oh and you will be able to share your plugin setting across pc and mobile which will be awesome! I’m excited for these changes anyways, and think that you will be pleasantly surprised No Help :)

its not hard to understand why they are doing this, they are first doing it to defend their IP against future use case scenarios, secondly they are doing it so that they can at some point have their official client overtake Runelite to massively reduce bots. There's a big issue with people building bots out of the runelite client as a base, with everyone eventually using their client they will be able to much more easily identify bots and act accordingly.

come on man its pretty easy to see why jagex would want to do this.
i dont see the issue if people are able to make plgins and release them on the official client like runelite. they should honestly eventually make it so the official client is THE ONLY way you can play with a jagex account. this will eliminate the botting issue 100%. youre losing literally nothing by this because all the plugins we currently use could be ported over to the official client. if its what ends botting, goodbye runelite! im ALL for it!

    • @marisasob
      @marisasob 2 місяці тому +1

Mate you can't port plugins from one source code to another, and saying it will eliminate botting 100% is also pretty wrong xD Botters are already botting on mobile versions, since there is no mouse tracking on mobile clients.

@@marisasob bro by porting i obviously mean creating the exact same plugin on the official client. and jagex can remove basically 100% by only allowing the official client. no fucking duh you cant just copy the code from one client plugin to the other. and although yea maybe a small percent bot through mobile the VAST majority are done through desktop.

I think this is brilliant personally but only coming from someone who sold their PC and now only play on android.
Most best methods and most raids and bossing realistically need runelite to learn or to play effectively same.
Simple things lime mahogany homes can be a nightmare without runelite plugging but unless runelite want to make a mobile version this is pretty essential.
There should be the same benefits for both mobile and PC.

The base java client that RL is piggy backing on is one of the primary reasons for there being so many bots, it's like a perfect blank slate to build bot clients on. Anyone familiar with programming will likely tell you this is a big issue inherent with Java-based applications, as their reflection and ASM frameworks make it much easier to mess with and repurpose code for nefarious purposes.
