You can really see how good K-On! is just by looking at this wholesome fanbase that still loves it to death even 10 years after the show aired :) Such a great video!
Oh god yes, the show still drives me to tears even tho I watched it, so long ago, I still have the songs saved up and listen to them from time to time ;____;
These characters reminded me that the simple pleasures of daily living, friendships and emotions are so important. This anime brought joy back into my life.
I watched K-On 2 weeks after my high school graduation and when i got to the final episode, tears flooded my eyes. I will never get tired of rewatching the anime and movie, as well as listening to HTT's songs. Actually, K-On opened the door for me to watch moe animes like Yuru Camp.
K-On is such an enduring classic that even when you forget most of the plot elements like I have, you still get a warm feeling just thinking about it. I thoroughly enjoyed it when I watched it, especially the second season, but I was in no way aware of how much it had emotionally impacted me subconsciously until the final episode - suddenly the tears just started falling (which rarely happens to me with media in general) and literally the entire series just clicked in my head all at once. The second best anime about friendship that I've seen, only after A Place Further than the Universe, and probably one of the top ten most influential anime of all time. Great video, now I want to rewatch K-On!
K-On is truly my favorite Kyoto Animation show, though far from being the perfect anime overall. We wish Kyoto could have adapted all the scenes from the manga. Too bad we never got to see Mio's white and grey stripe panties. Yui Hirasawa can look nice in that two-piece Santa Claus outfit.
finished the movie tonight, and... i'm so sad it's over :( it feels like the end of the sopranos, like i just followed these people's lives for so long only to get abruptly cut off for good.
How could she? She still writes and thinks in the same way she did before, I would say she has actually got better at it, as she is more experienced and has a better idea where she wants to go, and above all else, she's more comfortable now:-)
It is truly my favorite Kyoto Animation show, though far from being the perfect anime overall. We wish Kyoto could have adapted all the scenes from the manga. Too bad we never got to see Mio's white and grey stripe panties.
K-On is one of the very few pieces of media that actually made me cry. Seeing the friend group be torn apart just by graduating high school is just a bittersweet heartbreak all topped off with a personal song from Yui to Azuna as she’ll be the one to keep the club going is probably the best ending you could’ve possibly gave this series.
It's almost as hard to articulate just how much this video means to me as it is trying to put my own feelings for K-on into words 🥴 Thanks for giving me something to project myself onto and at least get an illusion of a sense of self that I will most likely never fully grasp.
K-on will be a favorite of mine for the rest of my life. I hate that I didn’t watch it sooner, because now I can’t watch it after it was removed from netflix
Watching the show I related to Yui a lot as someone with ADD and never being able to focus on anything. But when I do I end up satisfied in the end just like Yui does. Love this show to death.
Back in 2014 every Friday night K-no would come on and I stopped everything to watch it this was one of my first introductions to character driven stories and anime as a whole great to finally see this show getting the credit it deserves
Not too long ago I had no intention of ever watching K-On!. I had heard of it, but I didn't think it would appeal to me. Then I randomly fell into a rabbit hole of K-On! clips on UA-cam and the rest is history... I watched the two seasons and the movie in a couple of days and I was floored by how much I ended up loving it and how attached I became to the characters. It's genuinely become one of my most favorite things I've ever watched in such a short time. Consequently it even re-ignited my long neglected love for anime in general.
K-on somehow grows more precious as time passes. I pray for the day when Yamada releases a new film. After reaching the peak of her artistry in Liz, after the past years of turmoil for the studio and carrying that emotional weight, to put it in your art, I can only imagine where she takes us next. I believe it will truly be special.
K-ON was my first true love among anime. Before I watched it, I as a Shounen nut. I decided to give this a try because of my massive love of music. It then immediately won me over with its hilarious dialogue and gags, great music and above all else, fantastic characters. It was my favourite anime for a good 10 years, and still my most special series. The only anime I think beats it is A Place Further than the Universe which had me from the get go in much the same way. I will always love K-ON and will defend it to my dying day.
I can't thank you enough for getting me into K-on. I doubt I would have watched it without your previous videos, and it's honestly the reason I can play guitar now (took 2 watches of it, but after having not picked up a guitar for years the second viewing with my brother got me to get it out and stick with it).
I am not ashamed to say that K-On was the anime that brought me back to Anime after I had dismissed the Genre in my late teens as "childish". It was my cousin who one day decided to put up an episode of this stuff and then he started to show me more shows from that era before I got into some older shows and those I used to watch in the past. Nowadays I rarely remember anything about the show apart from Tea times and Mugy buying an expensive guitar. Sooo.. let's see how this video will hold up on refreshing my memory.
After years of you singing it’s praise I finally got around to watching K-on a few months ago and it was just as fantastic as you had said it was. Glad to see you talking about it again.
ya know, one of my favorite things about art is the connections you can always find. whether it be direct influence, reference, or simply cultural osmosis. But in the case of K-ON and The Pillows specifically, I love how classics can inspire other classics like In this case, as The Pillows did the soundtrack for FLCL. I just find this shit to be super cool, and i love to see it.
Awesome video, B. K-on is my #1 favorite thanks to you introducing it to me through your content way back when. I’m feeling like it’s about time for a rewatch. I’m just itching to lose my shit over the end of season 2 and the movie all over again
still one of my favorite shows with some of my favorite songs and this from a guy that doesn't really like slice of life or moe but K-on just hits different
This whole video captured exactly what I love about K-ON. I started watching it around last year due to a friend recommending it to me and it made that year a whole lot better for me. Seeing these characters just hang out and grow into more realized people was really entertaining and heartwarming. This was such a good video on the series and videos like this remind me why I love K-ON so much.
Thank you so much for posting this. The editing is great, lots of clips that let you appreciate the visuals, and even though the message doesn't really tread new ground, it's a well-made appreciation piece on k-on.
Heyyyy thank you, Beatrice for making this video--and thanks for uploading. All those things said about K-On!--it's one of those things that's renewed my faith in writing. I'll admit that I'm pretty unaccomplished right now, and am having a bit of a crisis because of all these conflicting ideals about what literature should be. And then I hear about the nuanced defiance K-On! brought to the table... and how, in different parts of your video, one of its points is just really to be enjoyed for what it is (from my interpretation, anyway), from the love and the care it was given to "there's always a good reason to return to it"... I'm going to cherish everything said here. Thanks. It's topics like this that help me get through what I have to. : )
Well the whole point of K-On even in terms of the characters is that apart from Azusa, none of the 4 were really serious about a Future as a musician they only did it for the fun of it. The Op and Ed are a perfect contrast to showing the moods of HTT. OP are sang by Yui showing their light heartedness and love for cute things, while ED sang by Mio are a bit mature and serious noting what they would have been like it they were a serious Band. K-on base is just about friendship, the music is just a bonus.
I agree, except after reading the manga of them in college I think the ED s in the anime were like showing us who they WILL become in the future * I see the ED as that:A glimpse of their future selfs.
I watched this series back in 2019, and it was all thanks to you singing the show's praises. Thank you for introducing me to this amazing series (as well as many others)! This year, I'm going to re-watch all my favourites, so I'll be re-watching K-ON! soon. I've just finished re-watching FLCL and loved it even more than the first time I saw it.
That is such a 10/10 bullseye review. K-On is a great show because it gets to even me, and I'm a very jaded edgy person. I wholeheartedly love all of K-On: the visuals, the music, the attention to detail, the kindness it brings to my heart. I really should rewatch it more often to soften up and be kinder.
I just got into anime this year but I'm sooooo glad K-On! was one of my first 5 animes I watched! I really loved it! I even drew their logo on my drum practice pads, bass guitar, and on the back of my phone and laptop!!!!!
you were the one who made me watch k-on and i'm so happy to see a new video on k-on by you :)!!! i really love seeing your thoughts on k-on, it really was such an amazingly well-made show!
a new k-on video from you is always an absolute treat! I just got done rewatching the series with my friends and it was an absolute blast, I swear the show gets better each time that I watch it. imo its the top tier comfort show. The lack of high stakes is I think one of its biggest strengths, on the contrary to what many detractors seem to say about it. The music too is just amazing, I remember years ago when I watched it the OST immediately popped out to me. I also feel like U&I doesn't get enough credit for what it is, about not taking things for granted and how it's worked into the scene after their final concert to signify not taking the fleeting, carefree times with your friends for granted. hrrg. such a wonderful song.
2:34 - even this is an unfair comparison. Love Live is a big budget massive marketing blockbuster idol show. K-on is a slice of life. K-on to this day competes out of its leauge without even trying to corner that market.
10:24 I got pretty happy listening to this as I'm struggling with my fandom right now, almost dropping completely and seeing a lot of friends and internet people "outgrow" this medium. Thanks for this
Hey B surprised to see more anime content but cannot express how happy I am that it’s k-on! Like a lot of your viewers I was an angry nerd who thought it was just a moe blob fest. My brother and I absolutely love it and are working through season 2.
I’ve never felt a comment more than when you said people who dismiss K-On out of pocket end up just showing their ignorance. I have a friend who has very poor taste and usually doesn’t have his own opinions, but follows what the general public says. When you made your orginal K-On thesis video he showed shock that it was your favourite and begun to warm up to it a little, now that more and more people have also switched and the general consensus is that it’s good when asked about it he goes ‘I like K-On’ but he usually doesn’t wanna talk about it much, cause he still hasn’t seen past the first season and hates when I bring up the way he just parrots others opinions and the way he flipped on K-On without a re watch or anything is a clear example of it.
I got into K-On after watching some of your older videos on it. I wall able to go in looking for the subtleties and gained a large admiration for the show along the way. I don't like it as much as you do but I've yet to rewatch it. I'd love for you to cover the show on KHANTEHNT, maybe that way I could learn to love it even more!
@@mrbanks456 I have no idea, I always loved it too lol. iirc she said that she got too caught up in semantics in her older writing but don't quote me on that.
@@Caroline_Alys yup. Not everyone is trying to go out of their way to be disrespectful. We can't tell you what to think, but you should know that making fun of someone's preferences just makes you come off as bitter and unlikeable. I hope you have a better day tomorrow
Funny she said that, because those two videos were a million times better than this shitty one. She just repeated a few of the things she already said. Nothing new.
It took awhile for me to get in the grove to enjoy shows like this, but the last year when I did, I put K-On! near the top of the list of shows to watch because of your videos about it, can say that I was not disappointed, I love the show and I definitely agree that it is a classic.
Fantastic video my man! I’ve seen a bunch of similar videos preaching K-ON’s strengths but none of them really tackled the history, backlash and cultural impact. Here you did just that and added more depth to the series analysis than I’ve seen elsewhere. Bravo!
My guitar ability and tone wouldn’t be the same without k-on. Got hooked on the single coil rock tone from Azusa and Brian May, bought a tele to try to chase both tones, and wound up finding my own along the way.
You've really turned me around on K-On after all your videos that I genuinely want to check it out and build my own connection to it, I just haven't gotten around to it yet but I really hope to rectify that
Not every genre nor every anime will be for every person. It's a good thing to try out different genres though, to see what is and isn't for you. Your taste will sometimes change as well, what you used to like when you were younger, you might not like now, or vice versa. K-On is a fun and simple anime about a group of friends who occasionally create music together. But really, the key point is the friendship of these girls. Don't ignore it just because they have girl main characters, if you're more into male main characters, it might surprise you. Give it an honest chance. If you end up not liking it anyway, that's perfectly fine. But give it a chance.
I do kinda wish you showed some evidence to back up some of the claims you make about the response the western community had to the show (like maybe some old MAL reviews/scores or Reddit posts), but otherwise great video! I think it does a really good job succinctly explaining how the view of K-On! (and shows like it) shifted in the community as well as how it is actually a more complex show than it might appear as on the surface.
no fuckn way Yui Hirasawa is named after Susumu Hirasawa I made the connection when they take Yui on for her name but thoght Hirasawa must be a name that meant something musical in some fancy word meaning way. 0:58 that's him right there LOL
My favorite fun fact about K-On! is that the show is comprised of 81.2% original material not in the manga. There's even multiple completely original episodes. That percentage goes up to 87.5% as well if you include the OPs, EDs, and credits. And this isn't even considering all of the extra music that was produced for the show. Source: www.reddit.com/r/anime/comments/5lh3ty/kon_series_spoilers_so_we_all_know_kyoani_went/
I watched it on a whim sometime after season 1 had finished. Had never heard of it before and dont really keep up with what is new in anime or involve myself in discussions of shows. I will say that I greatly enjoyed the show and I rewatch it every 2 years or so which is something I almost never do with anything else. A few years ago when I was in Japan I found a Ho-kago Tea Time teacup for sale cheap and since then have been enjoying an afternoon cup of tea from it most Sundays. Currently reading the japanese mangas as practice material and the show massively fleshed out what was there as stated in the video. Also read the last 2 K-on volumes of Azusas last year in high school and her forming Wakaba girls and the other one following the original 4 to university. Kinda wish there was an anime adaption of them but as it stands looks like its japanese only manga for now.
I can't believe that such a wholesome show would ever be thought of as "Perverted and Vapid". Imagine saying that about the Peanuts or Calvin & Hobbes. O_O

The thesis of this video in summary: The real plot was the friends we made along the way.
Always will be!!
Unironically!
And like.... the show has a plot. It just has some 'slice of life of week' when some other show would do 'monster of week'.

I read the Manga in high school which is the reason I started playing a few instruments like guitar, bass, drums and mostly singing.
This is my fave show, THING of all time, noice too see it getting respect :)
One of my all time favorite anime. When imt feeling down or what ever I will start watching it and all is good
i watched it when I was twelve long ago
still makes me feelsgood :3
10:24 I got pretty happy listening to this as I'm struggling with my fandom right now, almost dropping completely and seeing a lot of friends and internet people "outgrow" this medium. Thanks for this
K on is amazing
Hey B surprised to see more anime content but cannot express how happy I am that it’s k-on! Like a lot of your viewers I was an angry nerd who thought it was just a moe blob fest. My brother and I absolutely love it and are working through season 2.
Love K-on. Own it in a collection set with the music cds. Have a few of the figs. Mio and Azusa are my favorite characters.
The climax of the second season was one of the best finales ever
I'd kill if K-On! asked me to.
@Anguila Hombre It doesn't count if you have to watch it backwards. It may justify harming someone tho
@Anguila Hombre wait how do you know this
We could make a religion (cult) out of this
I’ve never felt a comment more than when you said people who dismiss K-On out of pocket end up just showing their ignorance.
"I have a friend who has very poor taste", damn I thought I was being called out for a second until I realized I have no friends
K-on is what got me intrested in playing guitar in the first place.
I'm so glad I watched this.
LETS GOOOOOO K-ON CONTENT!!!! she's always said she became dissatisfied with her loving thesis video, very happy for a redo!!
Really? Why? I loved that video.
Where'd B say that? Those videos are amazing and probably the best k-on videos out there.
I love K-On so much, it's a beautiful anime
Fantastic video my man! I’ve seen a bunch of similar videos preaching K-ON’s strengths but none of them really tackled the history, backlash and cultural impact. Here you did just that and added more depth to the series analysis than I’ve seen elsewhere. Bravo!
3:17 Sounds so weird for B to not call it Code Gayass
LOL
If you and Nate would cover k-on I’d cry happy tears 😭
Holy smokes is Trixie going back to her roots? This video was phenomenal
Can't wait to see K-On on Khantehnt!
I like K-ON I only started watching Anime in 2016 so I found K-ON charming and fun.
I discovered it in 2020 (tough year) found out purely because of English mio VA (Cristina Vee) and still love it
My guitar ability and tone wouldn’t be the same without k-on. Got hooked on the single coil rock tone from Azusa and Brian May, bought a tele to try to chase both tones, and wound up finding my own along the way.
These are the videos why I follow you. Please keep this style up.
K-On is my all time favorite anime, and was my favorite during covid.
POGGERS Anime
all of the music of K-on are great!
fact
I would love a Khantehnt K-On series!
We all wished for more, the probability is near zero, but we still have hope till this day. Season 3 pls.
