It's worse, but I really like the focus on platforming and the new locations we didn't see in the HD version. That waterfall climb in dragon road is just... Wow.
One thing I appreciated about the Unwiidshed Werehog levels was you didnt have to get an S Rank to get all the medals. There are 3 medals you can earn per level. Completing the stage within a fixed unknown time limit, collecting enough Rings(You dont lose any when you get hit), and Collecting enough Dark Gaia Energy(Usually from defeating enemies or exploring the stage. If you fulfill all 3 conditions, you get an S Rank, but if you only get 2 medals on one run, you can hyper foucs on the other medal your next run in order to get its medal. Saves a lot of time for Completion, especially with how many secret items are hidden within the stages.
Honestly, the sonic unleashed game on the wii is so underrated but I sometimes can't do nothing but grownpound with the werehog with motion controls and that's the only move he will do 🤣
Thank you for talking about how good the level design is in sonic unleashed for the werehog. I agree for the most part with the criticisms of the beat em up sections. The core platforming is some seriously top-tier shit.
Shoutout to Unwiished for these things: 1. Werehog stages are split into 3-5 acts instead of one giant level in HD. This also applies to EGGMANLAND (Night). Yes, technically the gameplay time across all of them could be the same as the single HD level, but you get the luxury to stop and take breaks in between so you're not forced to do it all at once. 2. Werehog upgrades automatically. Yes, the Werehog combat isn't as diverse as HD (though he goes get unlimited block/guard), but you unlock upgrades in a linear fashion throughout the game just by playing it, usually having it done by the final boss. There's also no daytime Sonic upgrades either, making it much less grindy. 3. Sun/Moon Medals are tied to ranks and not required to progress. S Rank everything (and complete every mission) and you get all medals. Simple as that. Stage collectables are gallery items or bonus acts/missions. 4. Playable Gaia Gates. Yeah, HD players only get to see them in cutscenes, and only hear a snippet of the music during ONE specific cutscene. Sun/Moon Medals go into unlocking and opening doors in each continent's Gaia Gate to access puzzle rooms for gallery items and extra lives. 5. Day Stages aren't as "boost to win" as HD. Sonic controls more like a "car" in Unwiished. His boosts are also single use charges with set durations that strip him of nearly all left/right movement. You actually have to strategically know where and when to use boosts to make the most out of them to blitz through the stage. Since S Ranks in these stages are purely time based, you actually get rewarded for mastering this if you're going for 100%. 6. No hot dog missions. Self explanatory. That is all. I will acknowledge the lack of hub worlds (being reduced to visual novel UI), and the fact that Mazuri is only the Egg Beetle boss with no Savannah Citadel, and how Empire City/Skyscraper Scamper doesn't even EXIST in Unwiished. What could've been...
I would play the HD version if the way you progress wasn’t so bad. Collecting medals in day stages when you’re moving at high speed is so annoying to me. And if you miss them the first time you have to replay the stage and find them like no thanks
Oh. I also want to say we need a version that uses the 360 edition as a base and puts in all the Wii and dlc levels into one massive collection. Same with a generations remake. Sad we didn't get colors DS stages added to colors ultimate... But it wasn't the best version anyway.
imo I wouldn't hate the werehog sections at all (for both versions of the game) if it was Knuckles instead, in fact if it was Knuckles doing the combat instead of Sonic then this would probably be in my top 5 Sonic games of all time. Anyway nice video, very well done!
That holding the jump button out of a ledge jump actually applies to those square things you use to hurl yourself up or to the side sometimes, right as you press the grab button press and hold jump and you'll go into a ball, and the height you get actually depends on the angle and how far down you are from the object so it's fun to try and get the maximum height to skip one grabby bit
The real boon of the Unwiished werehog is that it shows up more parts of the world, like that ice temple that you would have no idea exists if you didn't play this game. It goes underappreciated a lot because "Omg, werehog too long". If a fanremake ever materializes(Because we just know Sega will forever ignore it, look at what they did with Colors DS. Nothing), we really need a mode that removes the story and reduces a playthrough to the game's day stage-bones so people can be happy without it conflicting with the entire content package. 3:51 *wheeze* I am Unwiished's strongest soldier and one of my central issues is actually the camera. Yeah, for normal sections it is entirely fine, but way too often there is a moment where you have to cross a somewhat narrow plattform and for some reason the camera has the worst fixed angles for those moments. It's like right next to the actual combat in my list of what needs to be updated if we were to talk about a potential fanremake. Also, I recommend the Classic Controller over the GC controller because it has a more sane layout imo. Infact, that is the layout they ended up using in the PS2 port, minus that they swapped one singular button around(for some reason). There has been this really dumb misinformation in the community that the Wii version has no good mapping and people should go to PS2, even tho...no, people just did an oopsie.
As someone who’s only played Wii port through emulation, (and that’s much better than the PS2 port) it’s pretty good. The HD version is my second favourite game of all time so I don’t blame you for playing it more lol. I hope that answers your question!
I understand with the werehog not having enough move sets to make it fun But I’m still taking that werehog over the HD version because is too god dam long u like the HD version, the Wii have the level divided to smaller sections instead of combining into one hell of a level. Plus Wii remote and nut chunk feels better to me The only thing I like the werehog is his stretchy arms, other than that is boring a heck of a
At times, I thought the Werehog was better than the Day stages. I can think of some problems I have with the Day stages, but I don’t really have those same problems with the Werehog. Sure, it’s not the perfect play style, especially in a a Sonic game, but it’s not terrible. Although, I’m not crazy about Sonic Unleashed like everyone else is. It’s a B-tier game, in my opinion.
I played the Wii version of Unleashed first and had a good time, but after finding out how different the PS2/Wii and PS3/Xbox 360 versions were I had to try HD versions, and after playing that versions I was blown away with how much funnier the game was from is weaker counterpart, i did something i hate doing, i compare the two, when you compare something you view as a superior to some you view as decent, it make the decent game look worse, I use to like the Wii version of the game, but after playing the 360 I can't go back to the Wii version, i notices problems I had with the game that i didn't really notice, and one of those things was the werehog, there we're two things that really got me angry, now it cloud have just been my gamecube controller or my play skills in that game, because i don't see many people complaining about these things, one the werehog is super slippery for me, i feel like i'm sliding all over the place when I run, now I could deal with the slipperiness of the werehog if it was for the other problem I had, which is the werehog was so touch sensitive, i would barely directional pad and go into a full on sprint, you can imagine how rage inducing it is when your doing narrow platforming and you need to walk, only to start randomly sprint and run off the edge's, and it's not help by the slipperiness, so many deaths that ways, i can't believe my mind didn't notice this on my first two playthoughs of the game, i really let it slide........ hehe, I'm not cutting that out, that's actually a clever setup I did there. anyway i can't play that version, well the Wii version anyway, i've played the PS2 version and the werehog wasn't that slippery and touch sensitive, which make me believe it was my gamecube controller fault i had those problems, but it still doesn't matter I can't play the Wii/PS2 versions over the PS3/Xbox 360 versions, my mind will keep compare the two, and it would ruining my enjoyment of the game, that why i hate comparing things.
I get that. If you compare stuff it can sometimes be like “why would I play this when I have *this.* ” I still am a fan of both versions at the end of the day though.
I've actually realized the Wii version has some beautiful Werehog levels, same as the day stages. I actually prefer Cool Edge Day Act on the wii than the Cool Edge in the PS3/Xbox 360 versions.
SD version has good day stages that i think are just as good as the hd version and i have more fun s ranking it than the hd version. Also i think the final boss in the sd version is better than hd since you actually are fighting dark gaia rather than doing qtes. But i do agree that the werehog stages are more fun in the hd version than the wii. It could've at least tried to port the combat from the hd version but it didn't, but i do agree that sd werehog is better to control than hd werehog. One thing i like about the sd werehog that i think is better than hd werehog is the shamar boss. The hd version felt like i was doing a puzzle in a normal level. The sd version just has you straight up fighting the boss with some good ole fisticuffs and it feels way more fun despite the nerfed combat.
Wii version is WAY harder then the Xbox 360 version... Plus it's completely different and HARDER to get medals... It's hell for me... I haven't beaten Eggman land yet. All thanks to that 2 minutes time trial... It's SOOOO HARD.
I would agree but the Werehog has more stages, making it end up taking about the same amount of time. So to me it’s really “trash vs garbage” in the stage length department.
Oh no I still really like the wii version, it’s got some parts that are much better than the HD. But I do feel it’s still a downgrade from the HD even keeping in mind the limits of the wii.
Dude Unwiished's environments are SO underrated.
