E3 error, pull down the leaver behind the needle. It is gray. This tells the machine you are going to use the buttonhole attachment.

I did a practice buttonhole on a piece of denim and it was perfect. Then on the denim pants and the buttonhole was too small. Why? Very frustrating to have to sit and tear out the teeny stitches of a buttonhole.
