I have been sewing for over 30 years. My mother bought me my own first sewing machine when I was 14. I have sewn everything from simple panel skirts and harem pants to a robe a la française. But tonight I made my first buttonhole, two actually, all because my daughter asked me to sew her a dress. Buttonholes always seemed hard, your video made it easy. Thank you!
@@marzzarella2770 depends on the item. The robe a la française was difficult due to the pleating, gatherings, and shear amount of fabric, let alone the detailing. (More pleating and layering of the cuffs.) But then if I was sewing medieval peasant garb it would be significantly easier. Modern garments can be just as difficult or simple. A basic shift style sundress is pretty straightforward, a few seams, a hem, and tacking down edges. On the other hand, an evening gown can be increasingly elaborate with layering, various fabrics that pull differently, and various gathers. It really depends. If you want to see historic garb being made, there are lots of UA-camrs out there. Abby Cox is a good one, as is Bernadette Banner.
@@KellyDVance Thank you. I've been planning to learn how to sew and also planning on sewing historical garments after a few years. Although I think that sewing historical garments takes a lot of research. I just wish I'm motivated enough to learn about it. I've been itching to sew a regency dress myself but I don't really have the skill set to do it for now.
@@marzzarella2770 start simple. Allow yourself time to make mistakes. Keep a seam ripper handy. Magnets are great for picking up needles and pins. And do projects you will enjoy, otherwise it becomes yet another chore.
When I first made a button hole I didn't know mg machine had a setting for it so I just used a zigzag stitch. Its fine so long as I keep the button closed and don't look too closely at it.
I grew up really scared of buttonholes cos my mom would get upset when she made them. Today I'm going to make 6 ahhh! Thank you for this helpful video. I feel like it could happen!
This was so helpful as I am indeed a brand new beginner with buttons! Thank you so much! I do have a quick question: where specifically do we align the fabric to begin the first bead. I couldn't really tell how you placed yours.. thanks again.
Hi! I line it up with the top of the line I drew. Since the machine starts with the left bead first I make sure that the line I drew is slightly to the right of the needle. Hope that makes sense! Best of luck!
I'm making my first and for garment from scratch, and it's going to be a cute little pink jacket! (Hand stitched of course, I don't have an electric stitch thing) I wanted to put gold buttons on it (not real gold of course haha I'm poor) and I'm a little bit apprehensive of just going in Bear balls without knowing what I'm doing. I do have another jacket that I am using for reference, so I had a feeling this was the direction you were going to go in. but I am so happy for the clarity!
Thank U so much I like that U put the pins in. I want to make a blouse I’m trying to find woman simplicity pattern blouse that button down the back. Do you know of a pattern like that that I can get.
I WISH I had my owner’s manual! My machine is one I inherited from my sweet childhood neighbor, and unfortunately, it doesn’t have the owner’s manual, and the machine is an older one that doesn’t have a manual online. 😩 It’s an incredible machine, but I wouldn’t have the foggiest idea how to do anything more than basic stitching!
Hi!!!! Funny story, I got this singer home machine in May. By August I had to do my first button hole, I did a practice button hole following a video of my sewing machine and it came out perfect. I then get my project and start the button hole and I ruined 😠 ruined it. Not sure what happened but I was so frustrated. Thanks for your video.
You absolutely can. Using a stabilizer is a must for fleece since it has a stretch to it. Be sure to use a stabilizer and try a test before. also make sure that tension is right - you might need to loosen it a little more because fleece is thick.
I know you're the video's star, but what you're doing is far more important. What should you do? Put a dark cloth under the machine and use close-up shots of the work.
Hi David, this is one of the few videos that I didn't film myself. This was done by Allfreesewing.com in their studio. I didn't direct the video or have control of the camera shots. But thanks for the suggestions.
Very nice video. Seems like you have a machine with an automatic button holer. Would love a video with a machine that only has zig zag. Beautiful outfit and appearance, but when teaching, it might be best to tie those beautiful locks of yours back so you don't have to keep flipping and distracting.
why didn't you show people a good recommended tension and also how you got the stitch to make the button hole. it was almost as if you were teaching yourself. you have beginners on here you have to be mindful. I came to your page because your room looks so professional, I would think that your demo was too. Thanks for nothing

Since you sew a robe a la française, may I ask if sewing historical garments more difficult than modern garments? Or are they pretty much the same?

i guess it is kinda off topic but does anyone know a good website to stream newly released movies online ?
The first "button hole, how to" video that actually worked for me to learn by. Thank you 🤩.
I wish you could share which settings you used.
Prettiest seamstress I ever saw. Excellent video too; now I know how to make button holes.
I have never done a button hole, your video is very clear and easy to understand, so glad it was not rushed like so many that get posted.
I love Fleece Fun, free patterns and ideas and helpful stuff like this. And remember, velvet is pretentious, fleece is fun.
Thank you for the large demo to see!! Seeing it step by step was so helpful

What does it mean to do a stabilizer for jersery fabric?
Nikatronixx It means use an iron on interfacing such as Pellon.
I have always trouble with the seams when working with thicker fabric. Can u help me there? Thanks a lot.
what setting do you use on your machine
This was amazing. Thank you!
What are you changing on the machine to tell it to move to the next part of the buttonhole?
Thanks 🙏🏼
7:06 for me for future reference because I forget it's so easy 😅
Where do you set your tension?
Did you make your outfit? It looks so awesome! The print looks so unique! I love a blue and yellow combination 😊
Thanks very helpful

Oh no!
Thanks to the internet, many manuals are available online, have a look, even for old machines.
Thank you.
Thank you!
Any advice for me does not have the setting for button my sewing machin.
This was a great help thanks for this video. 🙂
How does the machine know where to stop and go the other way?
Great vid, thank you!!
How come I can make a test buttonhole but I can't make a buttonhole on my project. Is it possible that 2 pieces of fleece is to thick??

Also didn't see settings on machine used
Ma'm. I don't know how to use sewing machine even if I have it.
Ive lost my owners manual 😬😭
Melissa Ockey you could probably find a copy online by googling the make and model of your machine
This machine does NOT have a buttonhole foot?
Take a shot every time she says “buttonhole”
Do you need a buttonhole cutter to make the hole?
It’s an handy tool but a seam ripper with the pins (like I use in the video) will work fine.
Yes I’m scared to do it but I also want to do it on a beenie long story
i usually make my buttonholes by hand but now i want to fo it by machine because i’m making a jacket with 100 buttons on it
You are so pretty❤ you don't need to keep covering your r-face with your hair-
