Nice job. But why are you bending down to polish? Call me lazy but if i had that lift I would put those headlights a bit higher and work standing straight.
Another great video. I remember swapping my factory Renault Clio H4 headlights for the twin projector Clio V6 items, that was a ballache of wiring a new plugs! Merc looks much better - I love little detail changes that can shave years off a car! Cheers
After they are polished to remove the haze and yellowing you have to coat them with clear paint to protect the finish otherwise they will just get worse. Chris Fix has a video showing how to do that.
At 3:00 minutes in where he says "That's not Mercedes OEM quality..." is pretty laughable because a cheap plastic broken bit is exactly the reality of modern Mercedes OEM quality. The issue here is that the perceptions of our hero in regards to Mercedes quality are three to four decades behind the times. Do you imagine that an enthusiast in 1987 was having to fix broken headlight lenses in a 1973 Merc? I highly doubt it. No disrespect to Tavarish, you put out great videos and I enjoy your projects. Keep them coming.
Watching through all your old videos and hearing you talk about 30k subs and now you're closing in on 1.4 million. You're better in front of a camera now too. Maybe one day you'll match daddy Doug. Hell have him go over the quirks and features of your new 675lt.
I think the third plug is either used for the cornering lights (if that was an option on these), or factory fog lights (instead of being in the front bumper) It's definitely worth to check out... that third plug isn't placed without function... And as you can clearly see, there are 3 bulbs (without counting the indicators)... So check it out!
Tavarish I understand! But if the fogs still work, then they're definitely cornering lamps. Just look at the headlight assembly, e.g. Drivers side from left to right; Cornering lamp, highbeam, HID headlight and indicator underneath the headlight. Good luck! ;)
Hey Tavarish I bought a set of these lights off eBay and wired the drivers side exactly like you did in the video. Only problem is the light wouldn’t come on when I tried to check to see before I bolted it up. Am I missing something here? I checked the bulb and it’s fine do I need to swap any parts off the old light to get it to work like the ballast I think that’s what it is called that square aluminum box thing on the original light to the new one ?
If anyone is interested, to get this to 100% clear, 3000 grit wet sand, then polish flat with a fine polish as above - this removes the UV protection/ clear coat which has discoloured, then re-apply from a rattle can and you're back to 100% clear. Set aside a weekend for this kind of job - if you're a beginner.
I'm sure someone already probably told you but the best way to do those is to wet sand then clear coat them. After you do that then polish them. they will definitely look like new what you did doesn't last bit only about 4-6mo as much time and money you put into them it will be worth it trust me
I don't know if you have done it or not, but you should apply some sealant to those headlights or they will be as your old ones in no time! By polishing you removed the factory UV protection that they had. Just a little tip. Best regards.
If you wanna go from halogens to xenon you need to visit someone with stardiagnose to check them in so you car recognizes them after switching. Also you may need to add a light washing system plus that levelling system depending on where you live.
Crazy cool, how your channel has grown, from 30,000-some subscribers--a respectable number, in itself--to well over 350,000 subscribers today, just 14 months later. I just turned on to your channel a couple of weeks ago, but if I'd found it long ago, I'd have subscribed then. Better later than never! Really enjoy your channel, bro, it's great content, and you do a brilliant job of presenting it. #WRENCHEVERYDAY
Looks great. Keep up the Ultimate Daily Build. You (article on Jalopnik + these videos) inspired me to buy a 2005 S500 as my daily. I am 30 days in tomorrow! I have mainly been getting it back to tip top shape. I followed your written guide for the idler pulley and serpentine belt. I replaced the coolant overflow tank and air intake pipes + flushed the coolant, changed the motor and diff fluid, and rear brake pads.. Fun mods have been w221 s600 wheels and a "washer" mod to lower the front airmatic struts and a simple adjustment on the rear to raise it a hair due to rub in sport 1.I am looking into a command setup to do this via software currently. I am interested to see which wheels you have picked out. Will they be AMG wheels, or aftermarket!? I guess only time will tell. www.benzworld.org/forums/garage.php?do=editvehicle&v=40610 Congrats on 30k subs.
Freddy I did the same upgrades to a 99 ML320 I installed 05 origibal Ml350 headlights great job!!!! you should do the S55 AMG body upgrades grille front and rear bumpers

I just had a headlight changed on my Lexus after a small fender-bender and it was 900 euros WITHOUT TAX (about 1,100 euros with tax) for a new one! Thank god the other guy's insurance paid for it!
Seriously. Wet sand starting at 800 and ending with 2000 grit and then use the meguirers plastic polish/restorer. Or buy the meguirers kit for $40. They will look brand spanking new. I'm the headlight restoration guy in my circle of friends. Done 20 cars in the last year. As long as they are not leaking in the inside I always get them looking brand spanking new.
How do you disconnect the battery? I've read horror stories about electronics freaking out because the battery was disconnected but on the other hand it's considered dangerous to just disconnect the high voltage cables to the headlamps(?)
I wasn't disconnecting any high voltage cables. Those are sealed inside the unit, between the ballast and igniter. I simply disconnected the 12v wires to the lights with the car off.
I looked at one of your old videos about how you was talking about the S500 bi-xenon HID headlight upgrade for your 2000 S500 the 2000 and 2003 have self levelers but the 2004 and 2006 do not have that they do not level preset from the factory
Iv e got a 2000 as well my lights looked kinda fuzzy as well its just the lens however I did find replacement clear lenses and installed them looks as good as the 2003 and up now
The new lights look really nice! But why did you bolt in the light before the testing if your wiring was correct? Also wouldn't it be better to polish and clear coat your headlights before bolting them in?
Yeah, I see that argument. I would assume the optimal order would be: wiring, checking if they work, polish and clear, and then a final installation. I still feel like it is worthwhile to clear the lights.
bro you can buy the aftermarket xenon/hid 2003-2006 headlights for $209 brand new on eBay looks way better than those used Oem & just as good quality. I have purchase 2 sets got my 2 w220 benzs
Bought a set of lights off eBay and wired the driver side exactly like u did in the video but nothing came on . Is the driver side supposed to be wired different? Need your help Tavarish!
Hi, Very nice job. I have a set of the clear lanes headlights 2003 + wont to install them in to my w220 2000. where can I bay the connectors and wiring? Did you have the part numbers of the wiring?
I understand you more than likely won't reply but it won't hurt, so I got an 03 s600 and recently I had to jump start it with a booster pack well now I got some lights out in the headlights, I've heard that if you jump these cars the sam modules will be ruined, how can I diagnose what sam module I need, I've read that each sam module controls a different light in the headlight so I'm stumped at this point, I'm not good when it comes to electrical problems btw I got a 3 codes the Left high beam, side marker, and one other all on the left side.
Tavarish; I know its quite some time ago but by any chance can you advise how to convert back from xenon to conventional headlights? I have a 1999 S500 with xenon but the lights and cabling inside the lights are completely gone. It is very difficult to find nice used headlights so I bought new OEM but non xenon. The 6-pin plug is the same but that is also the only connector. So now the question is how to connect the self leveling plug, meaning is it only require to put e.g. one pin on minus or anything else. Everybody is upgrading but nobody is downgrading, hence I have the problem with the wiring. Appreciate your help and advise.
OK so I'm doing this swap, I have xenons in a pre-facelift, do I need to fit xenon facelifts or can I use non xenons? The seller will be supplying the plugs into the lights to make my own loom
Two questions.. Why did removing that harness except for a ground work? And are you going to do AMG Monoblock or Multi-spoke rims? Either would look sharp IMO
In my oppinion best car headlights are made out of glass. i have 2 15 yo cars with glass headlights and they shine as bright as they did when they were new. each car has the drivers side headlight chipped from a rock, but it only left a needle size hole and with the help of scotch tape, they are like new, just have to replace a sqare inch strip every 5 years. a glass headlight for my vehicle is 70 dolars -glass. and the new model has a plastic headlight but is 100 bucks. i don't have a polishing pad and i don't have polishing compound and i have a third car, 13 yo wich has hazed plastic headlights wich cost 150 bucks a piece.
UnicornWithSprinkles They were already toast before he polished them. From what I've seen, the factory stuff lasts about 7 or 8 years before it's totally gone, depending on climate and who manufactured the housing itself. A wet sand, polish, and clear coat is the "most permanent" solution. You can polish and use a headlight sealant but it won't be quite as effective.
tavarish bro iam a subscriber from when you were on 15000 lol but i just wanted to say that the car still looks dull and all maybe youy should get it cleaned like detailed and all and also if you can get some new wheels on the car like amg wheels it will look sich af man as always keep it up love the content
Please ask questions from Japan Excuse my my translation I would like to replace it with a headlight from the previous term to the latter term The four connectors of my car are black, red, green and blue Please tell me how to connect 4 wires. "Self-leveling headlights for when you're on shaky ground or on a hill..." Dude, driving up or down a hill or shaky ground has got nothing to do with it - think about it. The only time the car might alter its attitude such that the lights need adjustment is when it's unevenly loaded and the car is rear heavy and nose high.
The headlight after market is not the same quality for Mercedes Benz the car loses value special for Mercedes Benz. That headlights for the Mercedes benz original cost 485, or 500 just one side if you buy a pair you going to spend 1000 or more.
You can polish and sell off the old ones to recoup part of the expense I'm sure..
Wet sanding and clear coating will give you a more permanent fix. The problem with buffing and polishing is that you have to keep doing it.
DoItYourselfDan I was about to say the same thing
Nice job. But why are you bending down to polish? Call me lazy but if i had that lift I would put those headlights a bit higher and work standing straight.
I figured that out later in the video.
Obviously should've polished them before bolting them to the car. Plug 'em in, check they work, remove and polish, reinstall....boom.
SO much more in depth than the rather simple (looking back on it) dual filament cloudy plastic headlamps on my Legacy to JDM dual bulb projectors.
Man you just saved my life. My 01 s55 have hids and I was looking to get this upgrade but didn't know how to. Great video
Another great video. I remember swapping my factory Renault Clio H4 headlights for the twin projector Clio V6 items, that was a ballache of wiring a new plugs! Merc looks much better - I love little detail changes that can shave years off a car! Cheers
Is it just me, or is the right side headlamp assembly "clearer" than the left?
Mitch I noticed that too
It's not just you. It's very apparent.
yup it's definitely clearer. he should've wet sand the left one before buffing since it looks more oxidized.
yes it is
I feel like your endings don't get enough recognition for how good they really are.
After they are polished to remove the haze and yellowing you have to coat them with clear paint to protect the finish otherwise they will just get worse. Chris Fix has a video showing how to do that.
Glad you didn't put cheap eBay headlights like most people do

Thanks for using heat shrink and crimps. So many people just use the wire twist things
I don't know if you have done it or not, but you should apply some sealant to those headlights or they will be as your old ones in no time! By polishing you removed the factory UV protection that they had. Just a little tip.

Should we nag him to do the wood in the interior next haha! The car looks great, really enjoyed the video!
That S class deserves love!
Just bought a w220 it’s a 2001 and my daily. Modifying the headlights is on my list of things to do after I fix my suspension 😬
If you wanna go from halogens to xenon you need to visit someone with stardiagnose to check them in so you car recognizes them after switching. Also you may need to add a light washing system plus that levelling system depending on where you live.
Old video but I just bought an S600 on IAA for $1680 and drove it 150 miles home.
Please tell is Mercedes w220 s600 reliable
Good shit bro I'm loving the progress I just started watching your vids last week,I stumbled across It while during research on a 2003 S 500 👍🏽
Thank You! Ultimate Daily Driver Build.
Havinv owned a w220 for a year these headlights r better then some new cars oit there today
How do the high beams receive information from the computer to turn on and off with only a ground?
I think you meant to say YUUUUUUGE Tavarish

Awesome to see you work in the Daily Tavarish! What's coming up next?! =P
Did you add a sealant after polishing?
Yes! forgot to mention that!

your videos are ending too early here, not sure if it's only here
So you are not getting the amazing shit he says at the very end?
Been happening for the last dozen or so
I think he's doing it on purpose. Build up excitement for the next video.

you might as well get new xenon bubls, they tend to burn after years of constant use

Aren't there aftermarket harness that allow the headlights to plug and play instead of messing with the wiring ?

love the merc!
nice job man
Love seeing videos of this car. The Aston is just as sexy tho
hi frien , did you also change the ballasts? or did you use the old ones?
Some early w220 came with bi-xenon
Didn't you remove the UV protection by polishing the headlights?
UnicornWithSprinkles
They were already toast before he polished them.
Im looking at this and i'm like "Me Next!"
Love ur vids!! I hope you upload more tho :)
are you going to do the rear facelift LED taillights?
I've had them for years. :)
tavarish bro iam a subscriber from when you were on 15000 lol but i just wanted to say that the car still looks dull and all maybe youy should get it cleaned like detailed and all and also if you can get some new wheels on the car like amg wheels it will look sich af man as always keep it up love the content
oh i missed that lol well that will be splendid when it happens
What's up with the Porsche. That was so interesting. So many projects. So many random videos. Quality vs quantity? Does it exist in yt land? Not sure.
You are perfect to watch at 1.25 playback speed.
When are you going to paint this thing? I'm dying over here!
next garage update should be better lighting
Wouldn't it be possible to just replace the "glass" with the clear ones?
Will that process work for the CL w215 2002 with a install of the 03 to 06 headlights..reply thx
Where did u get these? I need new OEM headlights for my 2008 e350
Hey Tavarish, are you gonna start the Art of the Flip again?
Can you explain the wiring plzz. I have same car but I am confused wiring it was too fast yiu shoot plz help
Can you tell me what could be the problem one of my headlight is not leveling out whenever I start the car up
I need to know what light bulbs I have in my 00 w220 I have the factory xenon lights but I want to change the 4300 bulbs just want to know the model
Why don't you change the headlights with the aftermarket that has LED DRL one ?
I would like too see a weird quirks of the Mercedes video
Please ask questions from Japan
Excuse my my translation
I would like to replace it with a headlight from the previous term to the latter term
The four connectors of my car are black, red, green and blue
Please tell me how to connect 4 wires.
Is it OK to keep the six connectors intact?
Headlights from the previous term to the latter term, there is not not explaining in Japan
please advise
By the way, the headlight I bought is made by SONAR.
Why you didn't just buy headlights with DRL ? Because it kinda cool man
yay!
What type of polish did you use
looks god just need to detail the rest of the car
"Self-leveling headlights for when you're on shaky ground or on a hill..." Dude, driving up or down a hill or shaky ground has got nothing to do with it - think about it. The headlight after market is not the same quality for Mercedes Benz the car loses value special for Mercedes Benz. That headlights for the Mercedes benz original cost 485, or 500 just one side if you buy a pair you going to spend 1000 or more.
Invest into into power tools bro makes your life much easier
Chris fix might be of a help?
the ones on the driver side still looks hazzy though....
Just watch chrisfix's video on restoring headlights.
Polish up and sell the old headlights?
Probably.
You going to spend more money but take longer because more quality if you buy original from Mercedes Parts.
you have to change those rims cuz they look horrible
That's the plan
Great AMG ones would fit perfectly
Looks like Maybach 62
I wish it was this easy on my v60
Hi I have a question do you know how to plug headlights when they have only 2 pins ?
soy fans de tavaris.pero se podrá ver en español?
I don't know about anyone else, but your videos seem to cut off early for me...
Richouston "Stay tuned because next time that" and then it's gone.
Eliot Greaves i have that too
Richouston Hmm. I wasn't sure if that was the case or not. Genuinely just looks like an editing mistake lol.
Richouston
Not all of them. It's a thing he's been doing for a while but it's fairly recent, considering.
UV protectant?
