    About us:
    We're Jack & Megan, and in late 2020 we sold our belongings and packed our lives into our 2005 Toyota Troop Carrier to travel Australia. Our original plan was to complete a full lap of Australia and return home to Perth to resume our 'normal' lives. We decided we wanted to document our lap for the future and began sharing weekly travel vlogs of our life on the road and fell in love with filmmaking and sharing our lives with you. We completed our first lap and couldn't imagine living any other way so we decided to continue travelling and calling the Troopy home. We have gone on some crazy adventures since then and it is all thanks to you tuning in to join us every week.

    I always install solar panels on an alloy frame so as to allow air flow under them. You need at least 25mm under the panels UNLESS you rig a fan to blow air under them. If they get hot, they lose efficiency, and they lose far more output than it takes to run a couple of fans blowing filtered air under each the row of panels--and what is more, it will keep the interior of your van a LOT cooler, so I have blowers and duct the air from a master filter, which is just a motor vehicle air filter bought at Super-cheap.

    Hey guys just a quick one I have worked on caravans for a while now and seen it all, just with your solar panel brackets you made up you should have put silicone on the bottom and pushed down until it oozes out and than lay your bead to cover on the top, what you done was great but just the inside of the bracket want to make sure that’s sealed as water is a caravans worst enemy and gets in every little gap, easy fix just take the panels off quickly and reseal, love your stuff keep up the good work!

    I would not have used pop rivets at all indeed any other method to fix the solar panels, the sikaflex would suffice to hold them down, this advice was given to me by a credited Caravan Solar installer, (Sika 252) preffered.

    • @itsJackandMegan
      @itsJackandMegan  18 днів тому

      Thanks for the advice, what would you have used? I’ve used a pretty good adhesive plus rivets. Would love to know what would be another way to do it?

    • @seabee167
      @seabee167 17 днів тому

      Sikaflex bonding/installation advice is that you would need to have the aluminium roof ( and L extrusion ) unpainted, scuffed and chemically cleaned for the Sikaflex to bond correctly, they even advise a Sikaflex bonding agent. If you've sikaflexed over roof paint the only bond to roof is actually the paint. You might have done this off camera. I learnt this adding solar to my poptop roof but luckily mine was unpainted so I cleaned, scuffed, chemically cleaned and then stuck panel down on L aluminium extrusion same as you used with Sikaflex 252. I didn't pop rived through roof just one side and one end that was on the edge of external roof frame so I have not breached the roof skin. Congratulations on 50k subs.

      The Sikaflex you used was the correct Adhesive to bond the Aluminum, but the Pop Rivets was not warranted, as you don't see Caravan Solar installers drilling into the roof when installing Solar Panels, they rely on the bonding adhesive alone, my Installer said that Sika 252 was the better of the Sika products to use. I think you Guys have done a fantastic job with the 12 volt install, and I have learned a few things whilst watching, all the best with the rest of the fit-out and I look forward with anticipation.

    Awesome job. Are you not putting an exhaust fan in your shower cause you have covered the space with a solar panel it looks like?

    Looks like some good gear and you've done a pretty mint install!
    A tip when drilling through wall or ceiling cavitys with 2 surfaces.. Drill the first hole on one surface then drill a pilot hole through to the second surface and drill the bigger hole from the other side to avoid the surface breaking out etc..
