  • Colt King Cobra Target vs Ruger GP100. Who wins this fight?
    On the table today I have a Colt King Cobra Target and a Ruger GP100. These are very similar guns so hopefully this will give you an idea of what to expect if you have one and are thinking of getting the other.

    The Colt is forged which is about 37% stronger than casted steel. Hence, why the Ruger is so much beefier, you need that extra steel.

    • @jskypercussion
      @jskypercussion 3 роки тому +7

      Ruger steel is actually harder and stronger than colts. Most colts will not handle the loads I run through my Rugers. That's what gives Ruger the edge over colt and SandW is their capability to handle max loads.

    • @OBNXS1

      Ruger is definitely beefier.

    • @chipsterb4946

      You can’t make the assumption that every forging is stronger than any type of casting. Ruger pioneered using the investment casting process for firearms parts. Not even for a moment have I thought “gee my Ruger Red Label shotgun receiver is cast so it might blow up on this shot.” The best process also depends on the part and it’s function. You can’t really cast spring steel, so no cast 1911 extractors for me. (That part functions as a spring.) And don’t confuse the investment casting Ruger uses for receivers with metal injection molding - which is a form of casting… sort of. There are a LOT of MIM parts in the new Colts.

      The Ruger is better known and has a continuous history. The Colt is basically a new company since they don’t have anyone who knows how to build their guns from way back. I’m an S&W guy myself, except for single action, (then it’s Ruger all day long). The Colt is way prettier, but I’d rather have the Ruger even though I absolutely dislike the extra weight and the ugly grips. (My S&W over Ruger preference is 60% vs 40% favouritism, depending on caliber).

    I remember my old Diamondback 38 4" and the Colt's always have the best trigger of the market except Manurhin's M73... The three clicks reset is a characteristic of Colt's. Some new shooters not familiarised with Cot's revolver's triggers suffer timming failures shooting quick in double action because they not respect the rule of do a complete reset before pull the trigger again. Isin't really a failure, is a bad use for unknowingly of the gun mechanical cinematics. Some user's think that is a defect in a gun part in new Colt's but it's happen too in old Colt's if don't follow the rule of complete the trigger reset before pull it again.... 🙄

    I too get my mid finger knuckle banged up shooting 357’s out of my Colt Target at the range.
    I took a speed shooters advice and de-burred the guard in the area. BIG help.
    I also took coarse sandpaper to the front and back of the grips.
    Your idea of removing some material to allow room for that knuckle to tuck in a little better make absolute sense.
    Thanks.

    • @OBNXS1

      That’s why everyone always does an undercut on a Glock frame when they have it stippled; it should carry over to anything else that’s beating on that knuckle too.

    I own one Anand have shot both. The frame on the GP is MUCH bigger than the Colt. The Colt feels much more like an old K frame. If you actually wanted to carry one of these, the Colt would be much easier.

      dw 72 I have a 686 plus deluxe. I’ve though about doing the comparison but it’s not really a direct comparison considering the extra shot and the difference in barrel length.
      I’ll probably still do it though...and be told by everyone that it’s not a real comparison.

    • @dw7284
      @dw7284 4 роки тому +1

      OBNXS1 I think you should. It holds an extra shot but it’s still in the same size category. If I’m not mistaken, the frame is slightly smaller than the gp100 but bigger than the colt. Also it’s available in many different barrel lengths, so for the purpose of the video that might not be so significant. I think it’s a superior gun overall if you can get over the the damn 20 pound trigger lol. Just my opinion, great comparison bud!

    • @OBNXS1
      @OBNXS1  4 роки тому +2

      Thank you. My 686 is probably the best revolver trigger I own. Most of them I can stage, not the 686. I probably will do that comparison and just take the “it’s completely different” heat.

    I dislike the hinky trigger reset on the new King Cobra so much that I’m selling mine. I also dislike that skinny hammer.
    Hadn’t thought about trigger reset springs until you mentioned it. I don’t know anything about the insides of a Ruger, but I was inside my King Cobra yesterday. The trigger spring is shaped like an AR-15 trigger spring. I think that kind of spring has less force toward the end of its expansion. A Smith & Wesson has a coil rebound spring - fairly constant force all the way through its travel.
    Note: none of my 1960 or older Colt double action revolvers have an action anything like the new King Cobra. Those you will have to pry from my cold, dead hands.

    This is an unfair comparison due to the fact that Colt is offering a pseudo King Cobra. It is really just a bedded up d frame revolver, marginally acceptable for 357. The old King Cobra was more of an L frame S&W, Ruger GP Ruger size. Colt should have offered the King Cobra with a Diamondback barrel as 38 plus p , and scaled up the frame into a Python mid frame revolver.

    you don’t want to dry fire empty with a revolver from what I’ve been told from gun retailers, as it damages the primer strike pin both internal and external and you should get some snap cap bullets to practice dry firing on so you don’t damage the firing pin hammer.

    • @OBNXS1

      These are transfer bar guns. Not a problem. In fact dry fire scan smooth out the gun and is actually VERY good for your gun as long as you keep it under 20,000 per year for the next 50 years. (Bit of exaggeration but is you never live fire you could probably still have a functioning gun after that kind of use, albeit a bit loose and possibly badly timed).

      I've owned 2 different GP100s and still own one of them - a Match Champion in .357. I also own two SP101s. They are great, rugged working guns. But the King Cobra I just bought (3" version) is definitely a cut above any Ruger I've owned in every regard. Much higher quality fit and finish, and the smoothest, best trigger I've ever felt on a production wheelgun out-of-the-box. Trust me - you're not just 'paying for a name' with the new Colts. I think the additional price is very much worth it in my experience, but whether those details are worth for anyone else, over the typical good and solid Ruger, is up to them to decide.

    • @True-word74

      Not tougher or stronger . Cast iron is a cheap weaker form that’s why ruger has to make the gun so big . Forged is rock solid and 40 percent stronger . Don’t go by weight and size and think because it’s beefier it justifies it being stronger or more robust .

    King Cobra was never designed for steady .357 magnum use. King Cobra is more closely akin to SW 66 which like the King Cobra is an intermediate or mid-size frame. King Cobra and SW 66 are both a slight step up from their little brothers Colt Cobra and SW J-Frame respectively which are designed for .38 Special. A better comparison of true .357 magnum revolvers: Colt Python vs SW 686 vs Ruger GP100. Any true gun enthusiast would have all 3 in their collection. Each has is own specifications and design that make them unique. There is no BEST one. However, Colt Python aesthetics are truly extra-ordinary, vented ribbed barrel. SW 686 has its own thing going with high refinement and simple lines. Ruger GP100 is the blue collar champ and rightfully earns the moniker Built Like a Tank. Get all 3 then you won't be disappointed !

      When you compare in your hands the King Cobra and the Python, both are 6 shot 357 mag revolvers. However, the King Cobra is a much more dainty revolver. Smaller frame, smaller cylinder, smaller diameter barrel. While the King Cobra is chambered in 357 Mag, I would not recommend a steady diet of 357. The Python on the other hand looks like in can digest a steady 357 Mag diet with no problem. With the King Cobra, I shoot 38 spcl most of the time and save 357 Mag for when I truly need the extra power.

    The Colt look much better and slimmer. Ruger is more like a L frame or even a bit more while the Colt like a K frame. Ruger just recently came up with 7 shot GP 100 in 357. Would be interesting if the King Kobra is even smaller than a S&W 19/66!

    • @OBNXS1
      @OBNXS1  4 роки тому

      Gieszkanne the Ruger is definitely beefier but they’re both L frame territory. There isn’t a whole lot of play with the Colt in a Ruger holster.

      @@OBNXS1 There isnt that much difference from K to L. When I see the cylinder of the Cobra at 3:59 I can see the difference. There is no space for a 7th shot. the cylinder is slimmer it looks tight like a K frame cylinder and if the cylinder is smaller the frame also is. The Corbra is just beefier on the top. I once shot an 70ies Python and 70ies S&W 27. The mechanic is like butter. The Python is build like tank. You will see the difference if you get the opportunity to compare them side by side. I have seen two videos one where somone compared it to an old King Cobra and you can see that the old is bigger. In another somone compared the new 2 inch King Cobra 6 shot with the 5 shot SP101 and its only slightly bigger.
