I never really got Richard Mille. What with their gaudy candy 🍭 colours and illegible, over skeletonised dials they just struck me as jewellery for the uber rich to flex their wallets with.
Yet again, thanks to the informative video that you have delivered, I have learnt a bit more about the brands technological achievements and can appreciate them a little more.
They are still not for me. Not just because they are way out of my price range but, because I would prefer many other more conventional watches that I could really enjoy.
Great, well researched, educational content as always my friend. Keep up the great work. Always appreciated. ✊
The illegibility can be fixed very easily. Just have a dark background, extend the arms and make them a bright contrasting color. I see a lot of potential because of this. I just don't like the tonneau shape at all. But that's also part of the charm, it's contradictory in that it's large but light and sturdy. I just can't stop contradicting myself. So I think that several tweaks will make Richard Mille truly unique and awesome.
I just can't warm to Richard Mille watches. I fully acknowledge the technical skill and commitment involved, but the aesthetics are (to my mind) terrible to the extent that, even if I had the money for such a watch, I would not own an RM.
I'm with ya,but...🥧
Totally agree with you. To me they just look like a plastic toy watch and for obscene money. 👎
I’m happy we have something for everyone in this world, but so many look like a high quality version of invicta with those designs.
I have an Invicta and even I wouldn't wear a RM. They're horrendous looking
Damn man, you are really good. Especially agree with you about LEGO part
This video was excellent. Such great writing. I love your videos!
Parmigiani fleurier actually produce 90% of the RM movements.
Feel like I just watched a rm advert, '' no other company comes close when looking at movements''? Have you seen any high end watches from JLC or A lange sohne
Richard mille is shit
Did you watch the entire video?
Your review of Richard Mille watches was thought provoking, clear, and honest. Thank you.
I loved your video. Even more so RM watched. I love the character and uniqueness to each model they produce. Each one is fun and premium. I think the “cheap” materials complement the watch face design. It’s high end yet has a fun side. It doesn’t take itself too seriously. I love that about the brand.
Great video. Once again, an illustration of how Central Bank policies of low and negative interest rates have caused people to acquire ”questionable” hard assets. A handful of RM watches could currentlbuy a Manhattan penthouse. Really.
I’ve owned the RM29 in both titanium & rose gold (still own the rose). I’ve owned an RM10 as well, which I traded off for the rose RM29. My RM10 went up 25% in less than a year and the RM29 went up 30% in 6-months. None of my pieces look like toys at all resembling the early references vs. the more recent colorful watches. You really have to own one or at least wear one for a few days to appreciate the aesthetic, fit & functionality. They’re in a class by themselves ✊🏻
Nice
I know you mostly review luxury brands but please make a video on orient, I believe that even though they are an affordable brand, their watches offer a lot of value and they even have in-house movements for less than 150 bucks, it amazes me how much functionality and design they offer for a low price and hey they are not seiko but still are one of the top brands of Japan.
Great content. Very fair and valid points. I’m an RM fan and I think that appreciating RM isn’t mutually exclusive with appreciating the likes of KV, GF, or PD.
Yes they’re expensive, but from a business perspective, if it’s making money, it’s making money 🤷🏽♂️
Not worth the money. Stick with Patek, AP, Rolex and JLC. Nice video mate.
A fascinating video. Thanks for your consistently excellent content 👌
Excellent, balanced and informative critique. Thank you.
Alange & Söhne, Zenith, F.P Journe, JLC and some others have created mechanical marvels, have innovated beyond expectations, not needing to go to these extremes. Good taste isn’t born with us. We gain it through knowledge and years of research and work. An artist truly has better taste than someone who never drew beyond the house and garden in 2nd grade; and never after that had interest in art. A musician has better taste than someone who’s most musical moments were Barneys opening scene. Watches have had a standard, a vague identity considered acceptable -and to certain people beautiful-. Richard Mille makes UGLY watches. They are superbly finished, astounding movement designs, great innovative materials being introduced and used, and they are *%#*^#% UGLY.
Overpriced G shock
Hahahahahahaha
There most certainly are "technical" brands that reach the heights of Richard Mille and even surpass it. Check out the Urwerk AMC.
John xantoro Richard Mille is definitely more advanced than urwerk
Thanks for a very interesting, well thought out video. I’ve never quite figured out how I feel about Richard Mille watches. You’ve helped me understand them better, and appreciate them more.
However, I do disagree with some of your analysis, particularly when you say the main purpose of the watch is to tell the time. In this age of cell phones virtually none of us need a watch to tell the time. When I bought my first watch in many years just a few years ago, my primary purpose was one of style. It also enables me to not have to take my cell phone out so frequently, but, had it not been for the style consideration, I would not have bought one. If you look at these watches, they are obviously a statement of style, and a very definitive statement of the style of extreme wealth and flamboyance. Not to my taste, but I doubt I’m the target market.
Thanks again for enlightening me.
I have to disagree with you at the only for style purpose but agree that you don't need a watch nowadays. But, at least to me, the most fascinating thing about a watch, at least the more pricy, is that someone was able to build something to tell time by complex builds. Adding to this is that some watches carry their own history. My personal favorite watch is a speedmaster because of its rich history and the thought that you, by having to wind it every morning, give life to this otherwise lifelsss piece of art.
You say, "I totally had one" and I hear my twenty-something 90's self saying the same. Great vid.
RM is a watch designed for you to enjoy the engineering of a mechanical watch. Yet since the dial doesn’t give reverence to previous designs (also there’s the pair of the price point) the brand gets called a “rich man’s Invicta” by enthusiasts who also criticize people for buying fashion watches just because they liked the dial.
Glad you can put thought and intelligent analysis into discussion of these watches. Grotesque as i might find them, they are a part of Horological history and evolution. No denying that, and after all goofy, ignorant billionaires need a watch too.
RM seems to fit well in the Formula 1 world. To my knowledge the brand is currently partnered with Alfa Romeo, Haas, and McLaren.
I can't wait for the RM Car. No one will know how to drive em
“Farthest away from booring” a quality that feels distant when owning any typical watch.
Apparently enough people are buying these watches to keep RM making them. I think they’re facilitating and would own one, if I had more money than RM himself. They’re definitely over engineered and most are gaudy but a select few are magnificent horological designs. Like Harry Winston on acid.
Great review, thanks.
Just subscribed, wonderful critique! And fully agree about Price, Size and advancements needed to the straps 👍
You can't know if you would buy one, if you don't have the money to buy one.
I am glad to not have the money to buy it, my life would prove to be very boring if a decision for such a watch really had any importance to me ;-)
Great video! Imo, the RM035 Gold Toro balances the positive and negative visual nuances of the brand the best.
Could you possibly try to make a video about Jacob & Co? 🤩 Fantastic video!
The illegibility can be fixed very easily. Just have a dark background, extend the arms and make them a bright contrasting color.
Fine insight into a great watch designer. I wonder if you would review the Chinese "homages"?
Richard Mille is not a watchmaker in any means.
Read About Antonio Terranova and you will understand better the history not only Richard Mille, but also CVSTOS and Frank Muller. I had the chance to sit down and talk watches with Antonio many times. The guy is a genius.
I'm writing a book on the subject os the manufacture process of swiss watches and secrets that companies keep from us, customers and I'll go in details about Richard Mille. A brand that is not really worth what it seems to be.
IH
Very eloquent and engaging critique!
I’d rather have the house and just wear a G-Shock Square when I play tennis thank you very much!
Love the video, even if the RM mystique defies analysis. The RM phenomenon is the apotheosis of a movement that began with early sports and celebrity endosements and gained full momentum with Hublot. Not pieces meant for plebs like me, so any nudge towards practicality is pissing in the wind. RM occupies a stratum with names like Jacob and Co in which obtaining one is a reflection of having more money than sense. The ludicrous 2019 novelties still managed to sell, thus proving the point. And that's not necessarily a bad thing for the industry...
Nobody:
Richard Mille: Lets make a mechanical G-Shock & turn it up to a million
The basic Richard Mille watches look like an Invicta and Cerutti had a love child
Without looking at the screen I thought you were talking about a gshock 😂
Judging legibility of RMs based on photos and videos is not right. In many cases flat picture just merges all elements, but in reality the 3D (we have binocular sight, rememberer?) of the dial and hands, shades and reflections make these watches very legible. May be not as just black dial, but still. I’ve seen pictures hundreds of times, but when I finally had the chance to take a closer look - it was world of difference. Even the sense of scale worked different. The watch was bigger, yet smaller then on photos.
some of Richard Mille Watches i really like some of the styles ... would i buy one if i had the cash no way to expensive other good watch id rather have.... cheers
TinBin - Craig too*
The other end of the spectrum to the Patek Calatrava.
Excellent vid. Kudos! 👏👏👏
What i like abt rm is that everyone knows what it is from far, it is definitely a very loud watch
So.....your design ideal is "LOOK AT ME DAMNIT" ??
To me an RM is like putting the Mona Lisa in a hot pink frame.
What are your thoughts on Urwerk? I actually find them a lot more interesting than Richard Mille when it comes to the movement innovation and being unique. Plus I think they look good.
I've always said that an RM is a poor man's G-Shock.
I never said that it made any sense.
Lovin these videos! So entertaining. Keep it up!
Loved the video! However, a watch that expensive along with the complications it has, has to be and should be recognized as a timepiece! I don't agree with your updated design. However, can respect it. Nowadays people want in your face statements and the RM's provides it. Mr. Mille hit a lick with his market scheme and is enjoying the rewards.
Thank you for another great video! I would love to see a video like the grand seiko one on Hublot!
RM obsession is more about ‘TikTok’ things rather than about ‘tick-tock’ things.
I really like your review. Your review is as technical, intricate and complex yet focused as a Mille.
lol "What is the attraction of Richard Mille watches?" I'm with you I've asked myself the same question for years. If I had the money, I'd just get an A. lange & Sohne zeitwerk and the lumen that you mentioned.
I would buy lots of Rolex and AP and many others
Having money does'nt mean having style...ROFL
If you prefer to wear a tacky over engineered piece of jewelry that at a glance you can't tell the time then these watches are for you. I prefer to read the time at a glance not having to study the dial for a minute. Cheers
I wouldn't even call it a piece of jewelry. A piece of jewelry would be a diamond studded Rolex GMT watch. Or a diamond encrusted AP Nautilus. All right and iced out AP.This is not jewelry this is robbery I don't care about the Kevlar or special materials he uses it is way overpriced a people stupid enough to buy it
@@robertlulek1634. Anything warn to draw attention is jewelry. You are referring to fine jewelry which these are absolutely not. Cheers
@@derekshearer9049 I'm saying with the person in the video is saying he said it is jewelry and I'm saying quite the opposite if you want jewelry get a jeweled AP watch or a jeweled Rolex watch or a jeweled patek Philippe you must have misunderstood what I'm saying.let's watch it's just an overpriced okay watch no doubt but it is way too much money and people consider it as a jewelry status symbol as the man said in the video
@@robertlulek1634. I absolutely agree with you it's hideous and not worth the money. It does fit the definition of jewelry even if it is ugly. I think a diamond encrusted anything would look worse. I hate all jewels except the imitation rubies in my watch. Cheers
@@derekshearer9049 I was one of those morons that would save up a lot of money and buy watches for hundreds of thousands of dollars. Every time I saw the watch I took a royal beating. I bought my first Rolex which I didn't very much like but now I love it. 40 mm Daytona I got used to the smaller size with the diamond marker black tile white gold and I love it. I also like AP watches but I'm more inclined to buy a chronograph what perpetual calendar that is as high as I'm going to go for a watch.I drive Lamborghini McLaren and Porsche all at once I appreciate that but I would never pay the kind of money for a watch
You don't buy a Richard Mille watch per se - you buy an entry to a club, with a watch given to new members. You get exclusive invites to certain events where you network with other rich people, and party with them. The watch is merely one part of the whole RM experience.
I agree- but doesn't that make it worse on the whole?
The Dope Chronoscope Depends on the events I guess. If I was rich I’d probably do it, just to peak into that world.
I’ve always liked his watches. They just look cool and what he’s doing is clearly working.
Richard Mille is an enthusiast of marketing...
I like your "full stop" comment. The Swiss watch industry may be undergoing a slow death or perhaps a major contraction.
Nice point of view
I wish I could share your enthusiasm.
you're not at the level. no worries man.
They are desired for the same reason AP Offshores and all those oversized watches are desired. They are expensive and people from across the room can see that you've spent a lot on your watch.
Objectively brilliant observation. As long as someone will buy, someone will sell. Value is objective but common sense should not be. 🤣🤣🤣
Sick as The FLU!!! Richard Mille The lowest price is ''ONLY'' 60k ... OMFG!
Great show. Agree with everything you've said.
But if I had the money RM 27 Nadal would be mine.
Hublot Big Bang 2.0. Great vid though
I'd wear a Swatch before I'd wear a Mille. Even if you "gave" me the RM for free.
If Mr. Hublot and Miss Invicta had a baby watch, it would look like one of these Richard Mille watches. Even if I could afford one, I would pass.
Yes Hublot Big Bang 2.0
I don't think that they are going to be do expensive on future.
Do a speedmaster video
I think the RM004 is rather nice and more .. "conservative". It doesn't look like someone drooped all the buckets of paint on it. The dial doesn't look like the unlikely aftermath of an ICBM colliding with a watch repairs shop either (or as much!); The price though is..prohibitive!
So infact the term sports watch means not to be worn during sports em! But love your vids
I've been to the Richard Mille museum/store at Bal Harbor shops in Miami beach. It was AWESOME. There is a piece that records your G-FORCE while you drive your race car.
No.... Looks like it came out of a gumball machine. I know, I'm a Trogladite, and art is art,but I just don't get it. Then,I'm not a Pollock fan either. I prefer Monet, but I can understand how it might appeal to someone else. My opinion ? That alone makes them beautiful. Peace !
Ugliest watches on market!! Same as Panerai 👎👎👎👎👎
lol a tri weave kevlar strap would be uncomfortable and stiff
They are just the fancy invicta disasters
I quite like some of them, in the same odd way I find some Hublot visually interesting. Good video, Cheers 👍
Rm's. A 450k Chrono. I'll stick with my Valjoux 7750 watches. The second hand on these watches are a deal breaker, way too small. I think the takeaway is that skeleton watches are cool.
>Quarter million dollar watch with microscopic parts engineered to never lose track of time.
>Velcro strap, face you can't read, the size of a brick like it's the 1980's.
The Beats headphones of watches.
Very sophisticated and technical, but certainly not my cup of tea in terms of the design that I appreciate in a wrist watch.
I take the Vacheron Constantine MALTE TOURBILLON SKELETON any day before I would take any of the toys from RM... This is haute horology and not RM... RM is for me a wanna be Casio but being more fagile and 1000 times more expensive :D
That watch is not for me. Given the pricing is approximately the same, I'd take the white Bubba RM 055, and I'd probably wear it every single day. RM does to the Horology crowd, what Rolex does to the regular crowd.
The RM 52-02 is cool, the rest are just kind of unappealing.
Oh and also the Pablo MacDonough is cool.
Invicta is the competition.
I think we can all agree to some extent that luxury watches are not the best price to performance... if thats what someone is looking for you go quartz and fine. but to argue that for example a RM is very overpriced in regard to the quantity of material used....
1 . what watch isn't
2 its like saying that the paint the on mona Lisa and the frame are very over valued
3 if you can make me an RM with you 3d printer... Im in.... I want 15
I respect them technically, but I have on disiere to own one. Not that I can afford to own one.
They're hideous.
ugliest watches ever
i love the rm027-03
My rudeness towards the design comes from a place of ignorance to the purpose and the inability to aquire one.
Likewise. The aesthetic is what ruined it for me but learning more about it...I'm starting to come around to liking it. Still, if I had the choice to purchase it or say a patek philipe the choice wouldn't be difficult
@@DVSPDC I'm not in any money, my only watch is a heathered white gshock.
Wise words man!
@@CREEPINGIRON I don't come from money either, I didn't mean for my message to come across that way.
@@DVSPDC I feel this brand is likely the most unique one I've seen ever.
With respect, they are ugly, hideous and purple. I would crawl a mile through a sewer, to escape from one of these.
Expensive toy watch !
a Rolex watch a simple and bulletproof you can play tennis in a Rolex you can play sports in a Rolex it is bulletproof and a hell of a lot less money than that stupid piece of crap
I hope i never own one ! That kind of money is useful elsewhere !
i think you would never own one, no worry lad
"A dial that looks like it was taken directly out of an airplane cockpit"
Nonsense. Cockpit gauge dials are designed to be as plain and legible as possible to transmit the desired information - exactly the OPPOSITE of the Mille design philosophy.
An hour early on that upload I guess.
He’s not a trained watch maker
Ugly super expensive, difficult to read the time, and looks gaudy. Maybe if someone gave me one for free, otherwise I'll pass. Maybe a successful rapper who likes bling would buy it. I enjoyed your discussion and trying to make it appreciated. I can't get past the ugliness of it.
They just make me feel dizzy, sorry.
Whilst I admire the engineering brilliance, the final delivery makes me balk! It seems designed to confuse the very essence of what it is and it's purpose, a watch and to allow you to read the time! Then there is the price, no way, ever would I consider it, even if I could afford it. It certainly is ground-breaking work, in design and engineering, but with a Velcro or stretch rubber strap...now that is just taking the piss. Would you buy a Bugatti with wicker seats???
@ray h. that's the point, they are not....a stretchy elastic strap on a watch of that calibre and cost is taking design statement to far, unless they really are taking the piss at the Clients cost....emperors clothes comes to mind!!
There's a new one at $2.2MM! That would buy a nice house, or two, or three.
Or 10 :)))
