    • How I'm Going to Sell ... -~-
    In Episode 04 of What’s On My Desk (WOMD) I answer a question I get pretty often: Why are Richard Mille watches so expensive? I'll be talking about how this company has made such a name for itself in depth today, and I'll also address whether or not I think Richard Mille watches are the next Bubble.
    💎 Find your next watch @ bit.ly/2HiEHX7
    And of course, an episode of WOMD cannot be complete without showing you some awesome watches, so I'll be presenting a few styles of different RM watches as well, all of which are listed below.
    Richard Mille is a famous luxury Swiss watch brand that has grown enormously within it's first 10 years and its popularity since then has only exploded. A revolutionary in the watch industry, he is known not only for his avant garde timepiece creations and the materials he uses, but also for coming out on top when he decided to increase retail prices by 40% within a 1-year time span. I consider some of his work to be absolute horological marvels, many of which I am sure will never be replicated by anyone else.

      @@SuperXshrimp kinda but not really. I like rms but they haven't done anything innovating that hasn't already been done. Like the dude said they've only been in the game for 10 years turbuions existed way before that. If anything Jacob and Company has the most new innovated watches in my opinion. Did Jacob and Company astronomia has way more technology in it for about five hundred thousand to a million dollars add more bang for your buck then a Richard Mille does. I'm not mistaken I think the turbion movement had existed for or since the 1800s or something like that don't put me on it though.

    • @SuperXshrimp
      @SuperXshrimp 4 роки тому

      Rob Ferrell Yes I agree that Jacob and Co makes some fabulous watches as well! But they don’t compete for the same market, Jacob and Co appeals more to people who likes jewellery and gems, whereas RM is sportier and not like anything of it. Movement wise, probably you are spot on. But in terms of case material etc. RM always uses innovative composite and other special ways to make them (they were the first to invent full Sapphire case before other brands followed suit, and then they move on). I have respect for most of the big brands out there, but RM with their mixed of crazy marketing, limited quantities, and constantly pushing themselves, makes them very unique and desirable. I rarely see anyone wears them, but when I do, they are instantly recognisable and stands out alot.

    I’ve seen so many people talking shits about Richard Mille, but who are the ones who can really afford them? Their target audience are of a totally different league anyway. These watches are seen as an immediate status, made much easier with their distinctive shape which can be caught from a distance. There are people who are rich and theres alot who can save up for a Rolex, and maybe even a AP. But to afford a Richard Mille is a whole different ball game where you can buy a expensive car or even a house depending on where you lived. Thats why the ultra rich who wants to stand out gets them and they know having these bad boys on their wrist differentiate them instantly. Even if most people who could saved up to a Richard Mille after years or maybe decade, with that kind of money, most will think twice as they could buy what I have mentioned above or maybe more. Those saying that Richard Mille is ugly, they have produced a few “conventional” shaped models and those are shy-ed away but their customers because everyone who get them wants the iconic Tonneau shape!

    Thanks for your reply Alex.
    You are clearly very knowledgeable where RM is concerned. My point was that you were treating the watches ( shaking them around be the strap - having them scattered about on a board) as if you were talking about a Casio.
    Another thing which came to mind was the way in which RM increased the cost of his watches, simply to make more money. No added value just a huge price hike. This then becomes a case of a person buying a watch to show off their wealth without any thought to whether the timepiece is actually worth the amount paid. In my view it eventually results in the brand being thought of as vulgar, in the same way that the Asian markets supply for instance Rolex with diamonds and gemstones even though it does nothing to enhance the watch.

    • @RomanSharf
      @RomanSharf  5 років тому +1

      All valid points, however now put yourself in the shoes of RM, and ask the same question as a business owner is RM doing a good job? as far as added value, a lot of people overlook the horology innovations in RM watches because they see them as you described above, but have a read on some of the blogs online abouth the nuts and bolts of some of these you are sure to be impressed.

    I personally felt I wouldn’t buy a watch brand like this even when I can afford it. This brand popped out from nowhere and looks quite similar to frank muller. It’s not only did I buy timepieces because of their brand, but also for their reliability, quality & outmost important their history. I respected brands with over 100 years of watch making history where they have went through numerous market turbulence and still standing strong. Their strong will of success and holding the ground with great determination for the century inspired my confidence in them believing they can sail for another century. Watches are for life & I certainly would not want to invest my money into a brand where I’m uncertain will it goes up in bubble declaring bankrupt, making that watch we are holding as good as a scrap piece of metal.

    I honestly think so. Before I spent close to $1,000,000 on a Richard Mille there's many other AP and Rolex watches I'd want. For instance that very rare gold black dial pre Daytona Rolex Bob Maron has would be one of them. I mean good for Richard Mille he's using the same formula that Supreme uses and it's making him rich but I don't think it's worthwhile, of substance, or will last. Vintage watches or brands with history are where it's at for me.

    • @RomanSharf
      @RomanSharf  4 роки тому +1

      RM watches are definitely up there but it's definitely hard to say if their influence with persist. So far, people are loving this brand but these price points are definitely not for everyone. Rolex is undeniably a classic and you already know how I feel about AP 😝

      @@RomanSharf I'm with you on the history and vintage though. People these days don't care about the history they need the latest flashy thing which I guess good for them. It's not for me as an enthusiast.

Apart from just wanting to let everyone know i have money like ppl who wear hublot, or more controversial....being sponsored for a free watch, i cant see anyone would pay that much for it. Watch looks like it come out from a cereal box....

    Better off putting a watch strap on a giant diamond to let people know u have money to throw away. Ridiculous prices but the idiots are the buyers you can’t blame the seller for trying and succeeding 👏 at least with a Lange, Patek, Forsey you can understand the work, complications and finishes and for less.

    • @RomanSharf
      @RomanSharf  5 років тому +1

      that actually exists as well Jacob and Co :-), but in reality RM watchmaking is just as superb as that of the big boys you mentioned, but they are overpriced "a bit"

  • @Coltrane45

    Well said. It's a success story Yes, but a shame for those those of us who build a collection on horological value vs wrist presence. I'm the one reaching for the Richard Lange pour le merite for 70k or a journe tourbillon for 100 instead of a sand blasted Rm10 or limited 11.. but damn don't I wish I had an 021 or 027-01 regardless of the price.

    • @RomanSharf
      @RomanSharf  6 років тому

      Colton Davis I could not agree more, but no worries most collectors today are still choosing to go with horological values yet toying with a possibility of picking up “wrist candy”

    Hi Roman.
    I've got a mate called Ricky Mills who's thinking of starting his own watch company.
    Do you think it is a good idea or do you think he would get a cease and desist order from Richard Mille and them if he tries to go into direct competition? as his name sounds a bit the same.
    One time we were out the back of Shoe Zone by the bins smokin a doobie and he was telling me what he wanted to do, but all he had at hand was a chocolate brownie and he made a model of one of his watches out of it and done the hands with the edge of a five pence coin and it looked pretty good and I could definitely see his vision.
    Do you think he should persue his dream or just stay safe and keep his job at Starburger in Eltham?
    Please let me know.
    Thanks.
